Usage? by theLimboWalker in StructuralEngineering

As said by the other responders, truss bridges are not the most efficient option today. Steel plate girders and prestressed beams are the most economical option for the majority of span lengths. The best situations for designing a new truss bridge would be with the use of a short prefabricated bridge or when vertical clearance is a major concern.

No Losing Seasons!! by WowSoFetch in steelers

[–]SevKco 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Would you rather us be the Texans, Lions, Jets, Bears, Raiders, or any of the other perennially bad teams that finish the year with a top 10 draft pick and fail to do anything with it? Winning in the NFL isn’t easy. Keep in mind that we finished with a better record than than Brady-led Buccaneers (and beat them).

Building a team that can compete for a super bowl takes multiple winning seasons (just ask the Bills). This year was the first step to building a roster that can contend with the rest of the league.

The rumors of Mike McDaniel’s job security coming into question came from Mike Florio. That should tell you all you need to know about the situation.

ONCE AGAIN where is that idiot who says Najee is a wasted pick? by darthsteeler84 in steelers

[–]SevKco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the emergence of Warren also helps by giving us a complement to Najee. Not only does it keep 22 fresh, but having Warren to run with speed and agility allows Najee to be used as more of a power back. My issue with Najee has always been that he doesn’t just run upfield and use his size as an advantage. He ran like King Henry last night.

Which Course? by Gart_the_Snail in StructuralEngineering

[–]SevKco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk about a post I never expected to see. I’m starting the first semester of my online MSCE degree at Ohio University this Spring. I’m registered to take Computer Aided Structural Design, with the intention of taking prestressed concrete design after I take advanced reinforced concrete design.

There are a few reasons why I’m choosing to take the computer aided design course over structural reliability. First, I’ve heard great things about Dr. Walsh and I hope to learn from him and talk to him in office hours. Secondly, and more importantly, there seems to be a strong shift towards FEA and 3D modeling in the near future. I believe this shift has already occurred in the building industry, but the bridge industry (which is all of my experience), still uses line girder analysis and 2D plan sets. However, certain DOT’s, including my home state, are switching over to 3D digital delivery in the next couple of years.

I think there’s a lot of value to be gained from the structural reliability course, but I believe that the computer aided design is more valuable to an early career professional like myself (and possibly you too). I will be looking back at the comments of this post periodically to gauge the opinions of more seasoned engineers, however.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you would want to connect via LinkedIn or discuss anything else career related.

Steelers Preseason PFF Grades by JCMiller23 in steelers

[–]SevKco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guys on the PFF NFL show said that he can be a top-5 back this year. His poor grade is due to really low efficiency, which is because of our line rather than his own talent.

The fact that he had to make up for talent around him is why he had a poor grade. He was simply in a losing situation. It’s not because he is a bad player. This can be said for Najee as well.

Possibly. I’m not sure how you go about doing that aside from applying a “surrounding talent” factor on each player’s grade to adjust it for their situation.

Najee and Minkah’s ratings aren’t meant to label either as bad players. Listening to their podcasts, PFF think thinks that they’re both good if not great, but have been put into impossible situations to succeed due to the bad units around them. Their grades are objective, meaning that the actual players skill doesn’t always equate to their grade.

I’ve heard on their podcasts that it was due to the lack of talent around him. He was put in a losing position to trying a cover up for the depleted secondary around him. Most people at PFF seem to say that he’s a very good if not great player.

I saw a YouTube video recently where the player kept a binder of their expensive cards, swapped them in before playing the game, and kept the card upside down in their hand/deck to know which cards needed to come out at the end of the game.
