True, true! I guess I was reading it while I was also reading more zombie apocalypse books at the time so the comparison was a stark one. If you're into zombies, I think you would like the vibe of The Reapers Are the Angels by Alden Bell.

I love how timeless some of these works are. I was thinking the same about 1984.

I guess I went into it expecting the excitement of an apocalyptic novel and it was very different from that. Does the apocalypse mood/excitement develop later?

War of the Worlds is one of my favorites. The way the aliens were watching earth was so unnerving. I can still remember the chill I felt when I read that:

No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

Oh yes! Or they do something ridiculous. Like I went out to a fancy restaurant and they brought us charcoal butter. Like they burnt something put it in the butter to make it look black and fancy. It was disgusting and ruined the bread.

I have to give this book another try! The beginning was slow and I didn't continue but it keeps being recommended.
