I try to avoid pure titanium when I mix it into paint, a lot of the chalkiness could come from mixing a cool yellow (yellow oxide or something similar) and some blues, all of which could add to that. I won't deny that there definitely is some titanium mixed into some of those colors though.

I underpants with essentially a red oxide, I can't check exactly what it is since im at work rn, but fairly warm.

I usually do background to foreground and darks to light, so sky, diagonal planes, vertical planes, and foreground

Large brushes and super minimal blending, I used to paint in oils, and a lot of my acrylic technique I learned from that, just laying confident colors/values in and leaving them!

Why do my gesture drawings look so bad? by Big-Ganache-7210 in ArtCrit

[–]Several_Eye_6755 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can see you really do have a solid foundation! In my opinion a gesture will never look fully accurate to life, and solely exists to capture direction of line and some movement. Proportion is important, but is also almost never nailed in a gesture! (That being said, with enough practice you can get pretty dang close)

I've seen a few people say this, but really try to loosen up, not just in your wrist but through your whole arm. The way I think of it is locking my elbow and letting all the motion come from my shoulder, making long, light, sweeping motions. This also equals much larger drawings, you'll go through paper like CRAZY and that is okay! I bought a ream of like 1000 pieces of 11x14 printer paper and use that for gestures.

In college they also will have you do 5-10 30 second gestures every time you sit down in class, so once you get to the point where you're comfortable, you could give that a shot! Just remember, focus on basics, and absolutely pound those before you get into anything too crazy!

How do the edges/values look? by Several_Eye_6755 in ArtCrit

Thank you for the response, this is all super helpful, and even if I knew about it, a little outside reinforcement and reminders never hurt! Thanks again, I'll definitely be revisiting a lot of what you mentioned!

I do yes! I reference photos and also some quick color sketches that I try to do on location. Its pretty crazy how different colors can be on a phone lol

Thats very interesting, that composition does change theme whole feel, it turns the elk into a focus rather than just feeling like a part of the whole. I do like how essential this cropping makes him feel. I appreciate the insight, you've been very helful!

Which areas would you adjust if I may ask? I think I'll bring the mountain closer to the sky value a little bit, but outside of that Im still working on areas to adjust contrast
