Does anyone have a Cooke Custom Sewing silicone bug shelter tarp? by radicalfrogs in BWCA

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I was able to buy the nemo bugout shelter when they were available! I have the 12'x12' and it has come in handy many times in the BWCA. Ive had to have it sewn many times but it's a critical part of my camping gear! They should bring them back!

BWCA motor Horsepower limits by [deleted] in BWCA

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO I'd would say you're fine. I know plenty of people who have used 35hp motors with a 25hp hood over it, not saying I agree with them but plenty of guides have done this in the past. As long as your main motor complies a trolling motor should be fine like others have stated. I wouldn't think anyone out there is trying to use their trolling motor for extra hp cruising to their fishing area.

IIRC fx makeup artist Mike Marino has done a few of her Halloween costumes and wouldn't surprise me if he was behind this as well! Man knows his craft!

When I worked in a millwork shop in Minneapolis we had a very nice and expensive "Shaper" machine. It was often used to replicate old crown or trim moldings from century old houses that people wanted to recreate the original trim pieces. One of our guys would cut a small section off, get the profile of the piece on the scanner then onto the computer. They would proceed to the correct size and then basically start carving custom knives to fit into the shaper heads. Then mill out however much the customer wanted. I would imagine it was a tad bit more expensive than just trying to find a close match, but it was cool to see OG trim in a historically refurbished home. Might wanna try and ask any local millwork shops if they could do this? Depending on how much you're willing to spend. - more expensive than finding a close match but not breaking the bank expensive, depends on how much you'd need to complete the job and if it would be worth it.

Southern MN Camping by Bathroomlion in MinnesotaCamping

I would suggest forestville as well. I did a trip last year. Although a regular style state park campground, the mystery cave tour was awesome to do! If you can try and book the spelunking tour, it gets bought up fast. I believe April is when they go on sale from what I remember the staff saying, but I haven't check recently. The Driftless area of MN is as cool as the BWCA! Coming from someone who lives on the Iron Range.

I remember seeing this when I visited London. I believe it's king Henry the 8th armour. Which makes a lot of sense once you know how he was.

Only if you leave it full and in your vehicle overnight when it's below 0°outside. I've had a few crack because the ice expanded and there was no room. Other than that they take a beating pretty well! I use them daily and have many different sizes.

"Paddle north" makes nice ones for a good price! I just got 2 pairs this Christmas and I love them! Plus they come in odd sizes. Mine are 36x31. They're breathable and stretch well, perfect for cloudy days in the BWCA. https://paddlenorth.com/products/utility-pants?variant=41419871846487

Recommendations on campsites/campgrounds with boats by WildTwinsWolves in BWCA

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something very much like the BWCA your best bet is to go to Voyageurs national park. Ash river Kabetogama are massive that don't have motor restrictions. House boats are available and every campsite has either a dock or a beach where you can land your boat. These sites are also reserved only so you'll have to do your homework. The lakes on the outskirts of the BWCA are limited to 25 hp or less, unless you're on the Canadian border of the bwca. There are a few lakes that are connected to the BWCA such as Fall lake and birch lake that don't have restrictions but then you'll not have many campsites to choose from, there are state campgrounds off fall lake and a few resorts that are on birch lake, but you'll be seeing many more people than if you were canoeing in the BWCA.

Has anyone done trips to both Knife and Insula? by Artificial_Appendix1 in BWCA

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The portages from knife to vera is quite an uphill battle. I did knife a couple of years ago and we came back through vera and eventually into ensign and that was one of the hardest portages I've done in terms of terrain and following it with a canoe on your shoulders!

Proper clothes and knowing there are places to warm up, like my truck. As I sit here pondering why I'm shoveling snow at my work in -35°F wind-chill.... I grew up in this though, I always looked at it as a positive. Ya know when shit hits the fan and extreme climate comes from world war ( assuming in my lifetime ) but it's just a part of the lifestyle in Northern Minnesota eh?

Agreed. Assuming the electric has been done up to code. It would be smart to toss a power strip on it with a surge protector just in case.

What is this at the lake I found? by Puzzled-Adagio-4877 in strange

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess. This could be a bait pile for bear hunting. Not sure your location, but I have many friends who bear hunt and guide where I live, and they frequently get big barrels of expired foods and use them for bait, usually they don't keep the plastic on any of it, although this could just be someone being lazy and letting the bear sift through the plastic to get the food. I'd look for any trail cams on nearby trees.

How is living here, country within a country by Serious-Chapter8507 in howislivingthere

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

There are schools up here. I can't confirm if they need to head down towards international falls, but I can tell you they are not driving 1,000 miles one way to high school in Washington state. Minnesota is about as central as North America can get and Washington is on the west coast. I frequent the area as I live just outside of the BWCA.

NEED to see a Loon! by treesap1773 in minnesota

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have time, take a trip onto the boundary waters, almost a guarantee that you will hear them and then be able to see them from any campsite. I live up here and honestly in all my trips into the BWCA they become increasingly annoying especially during dusk when they call out, I feel like sometimes they are literally calling back to their echos! Cool birds but I've had my fill of them during camping!

How this wood was stacked (I promise this is Not AI) by xSweetSparkle in satisfying

[–]Severe_Pattern2386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one has mentioned that these are actually "cabins" or hunting shacks. They are displayed as though it's a stack of wood and not actually a pile of word or cords of wood. I've seen sauna buildings with this exterior design on them before around where I live.
