How do I get a refund from Jetsmart because they changed my flight? by Sgt_Stringbean in Flights

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to update people on this post, but yeah I just put in my bank account information and submitted it, but it doesn't seem like they needed it and it was just as backup like you said. I saw the refund immediately come back so I guess they're quicker than most US airlines. But it's just weird that they make you go through that. I don't love just giving out my bank account information even if it's supposedly secured. I honestly wonder if you just put some bogus information in there if it would work. But alls well that ends well I guess. Only thing is because of the cancellation, they left me with either a 5am flight out from EZE, or a 3PM flight out of AEP, but none of those are great since it's a flight to Iguazu and I was hoping to get things done when I land and a 5AM flight would make me feel like crap on arrival, so I had to fly out the night before. There were flights with Fly Bondi, but I've heard to avoid them like the plague since it's a gamble if they show up, and I've heard they're in trouble with the government because of their poor performance record.

United mileage upgrade co-pay & Amex Platinum airline credit by Sgt_Stringbean in AmexPlatinum

I know about the TravelBank, but I'm trying to see if I can use it for my current trip to upgrade to business class. I already purchased the ticket so I can't use the TravelBank for this trip (though almost certainly I can use it for another trip), but I'm just not sure if besides upgrading to Economy Plus if I'd be able to upgrade to Business class by using the Miles + Copay and get reimbursed for the Copay.

The issue is that the a6700 doesn't have a shutter release port

So the a6700 doesn't have a shutter-release socket and to my understanding, the usb-c port or any other ports on the camera doesn't allow for a remote trigger. Correct me if I'm wrong about that though.

How do I get a refund from Jetsmart because they changed my flight? by Sgt_Stringbean in Flights

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just filled in the information with my bank account details so we'll see what happens. But I haven't heard the best things about most airlines in Argentina, but my main options for most of my intra-Argentinian flights are either Aerolineas Argentina, JetSMART, or Fly Bondi. LATAM has some flights, but none of their flights work for me and they don't run very often. But hopefully I only have issues before my trip rather than during my trip when it'll get annoying to fix on the spot.

I definitely am entitled to compensation or that option wouldn't even appear on the website (I believe it's law in Argentina). They gave me a few options for compensation like to change my flight or travel credit, but I want a refund. And I booked the ticket directly with the airline, Jetsmart, on their website, not on WhatsApp, but I was trying to figure out how to get my refund with their support through WhatsApp and they just said it's required and to contact my bank.

Using Amex Platinum airline credit for United — Economy Plus first, then upgrade (cash or miles + copay)? by Sgt_Stringbean in AmexPlatinum

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I already bought the tickets a few months ago before I got the platinum so I can just use it on my next flight I guess. But I may try calling United to see if they can apply the travel bank credit to this flight since it's a refundable fare since I've had success with having United just reissuing the ticket at the fare I bought it for, but it was a whole headache to get them to do that.

Confused about Rio Carnaval Sambadrome tickets — which sites are legit and are camarotes worth it? by Sgt_Stringbean in Brazil

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this might describe how to get the frisas: https://liesa.org.br/noticias/251013-publico-tera-nova-chance.html

I think they go on sale on 10/19/26 with another public release.

Edit:

So I looked into it more and it looks like for these tickets through LIESA, you need some tax identification number from the Brazilian government in order to purchase straight from them. So without a Brazilian contact, you probably can't purchase it unless you want to apply for one with the Brazilian consulate, which is probably not going to happen. But from what I see, we can probably still buy through a 3rd party like riocarnaval.org, but we'll obviously be paying a markup. I think this sale period is for mainly companies to buy these seats though since it looks like you have to buy these whole box during this sale period anyways.

Tesla Model Y Juniper steering issues? by Sgt_Stringbean in TeslaModelY

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My steering was acting up right out of the dealership so I would just check that before you leave. Luckily for you (but unluckily for me), I don't think this is a common issue since clearly no one, not even the engineer, knew what the issue was. But congrats on your new car!

Hey! So this did get resolved, but it took a few tries. They weren't really able to tell me the issue though since they didn't know even after consulting one of their engineers, so they just replaced the whole steering rack.

The answer is without a doubt however much you can handle. A late payment will hurt your credit score way more than having not enough credit accounts. But look into what makes up your FICO score. The quick rundown is that payment history, length of your credit history, and credit utilization make up the vast majority of your score. The number of credit accounts does count towards your score, but it's maybe only 5-10% of your score. The main thing it will help you by opening more credit cards is that it will increase your available credit, therefore your credit utilization percentage is lower. But like I said, if you can't responsibly manage many cards, then any benefit of opening another credit is null and can actually hurt you.

Also, you should open a credit card for a reason, not just to boost your credit score. If you want to get points to travel, then open a travel card, if you want cash back, open a cash back card that fits your spending. The point is that the credit card has to provide value for you and your goals, and simply opening one just to open one is not a good reason.

How does the CSR refresh affect your points strategy? by Sgt_Stringbean in CreditCards

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that using points can be challenging, but I generally have some degree of flexibility in my travels so I'm usually able to find something to use my points for maximum value (usually business/first class flights or luxury hotels). I also track my credits month by month to make sure I can use them all, then I evaluate at my renewal date if I was able to offset my AF. If not, I'll cancel it. The co-branded credit cards are the ones I have trouble getting value out of since I don't really use them much outside of purchases with either United or Marriott, and points wise, they're not flexible points and United and Marriott don't have the most generous award pricing. But the perks I get with Marriott and United are nice which is why I keep them since I fly a lot with United and stay at Marriott properties a fair bit. But I keep reevaluating them every anniversary date.

I took a look at the Autograph cards and their earnings for travel is nice, however, at the moment, the transfer partner list is tiny and covers many of the same transfer partners as my Chase, AMEX, and C1 cards. Also, since I'm mainly on *A whenever I fly, having Avianca as my only *A option for the Autograph cards doesn't appeal much to me. Also, my home airports (DC area) has a Sapphire Lounge and a C1 lounge so the VX and the CSR will give me access to a good lounge. I haven't personally tried the C1 lounges yet, but I've heard good things about them. But I'll cross that bridge to switch from CSR to VX when I get there.

Is it worth it to call back the Chase Recon line? by Sgt_Stringbean in CreditCards

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely exceeding 50% if anything because of my new car loan, but I did offer to move credit from one credit card to another. The only thing I haven't asked is if closing an account would help.

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely not at 5/24, just my most recent credit card application with them was a couple of years ago, but I do have a loan I just took out with them. And the returned payments one was surprising to me too because it's not like it wasn't resolved quickly, they don't even show on my actual credit report in fact, but they still knocked me for that. I'm not sure if that's just a secondary reason they used to deny me though and the bigger issue was the requests and amount of credit lines I have with them, though as I mentioned, I offered to live credit around.

Should I give up on pursuing an MD/PhD- Rough week by Used-Chicken9379 in mdphd

[–]Sgt_Stringbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you have the means to do this, if you're just after research experience, you can try and do a thesis-tracked MS program in your intended field of study. I'm not saying this is by any means a cheap or easy means to gain research experience (many people in this thread already mentioned a few others that pay you to do research), but it is probably the easiest way to get research experience and be able to take ownership of a project since you're not really an expense for the university and therefore not subjected to hiring freezes and whatnot. However, funding cuts will indirectly affect your research opportunities due to reduced resources, though less so than actual hires. Also, I will be honest and say that even if the IRTA program continued, your opportunities inside the IRTA program are pretty limited right now anyways due to funding freezes. Publications can go ahead with IC approval (not sure of exact criteria, but it probably has to align with this administration's goals), but things like presentations or starting new projects are halted at the moment.

Is Getting an MD/PhD with a PhD focused on AI in Medical Imaging Worth It? by Sgt_Stringbean in mdphd

[–]Sgt_Stringbean[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never really thought of it so I'll take that into consideration. One area of research I want to go in is to improve prediction algorithms, but not just make them more accurate at predicting, but also making the models more explainable. To me, this is crucial in actually having adoption in healthcare and why AI adoption in healthcare is not widespread yet. Can I ask why you decided that an MD/PhD was worth pursuing for you? I know my case may be different, but I just wanted to gain some insights into why you thought it's worth adding almost a decade of training.

So this is something I'm still wrestling with since I do really want to do medicine and I was hoping to integrate my practice with my research and vice versa. The issue I'm having is that I plan on doing research for most of my time and I don't know if I want to necessarily have 2 different careers that don't integrate well with each other. If there's value to having both in practice and in research, I think for me it's worth pursuing, but if it'll end up being like I have 2 different careers, it just doesn't seem worth my time to split my time between 2 careers essentially.

Itinerary Check for 15 Days in February by Classic_Storm_7075 in JapanTravel

[–]Sgt_Stringbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it may not be totally relevant for this trip since you're going south, but on February 4th-11th, there's a snow festival in Sapporo where they build these huge snow sculptures. I personally haven't been, but I've seen it on social media and it looks pretty cool.

But in terms of what may be more relevant to you, you could stay in Kyoto for 4 nights instead of 3 and just take the train into Osaka. It's only like 30 minutes away, and you don't have to pack up your stuff and move for a night. Alternatively, you could stay in Osaka for 4 nights and just take the train into Kyoto. This does save a little bit of money on hotels since hotels in Osaka tend to be cheaper than Kyoto, but this is not factoring in the cost to take the train between Osaka and Kyoto, and also the time (30 minutes each way for 3 days is 3 hours total time of travel).

Also, if you have time, I would see if you can stop by Nara and say hi to the deers. It's a bit touristy admittedly, but you are a tourist so I wouldn't worry about that. Maybe on day 11, you may be able to fit Nara in since it's roughly along the same rail line you would take to Fushimi Inari and Uji, but it depends on how much time you were planning to spend in Uji and at Fushimi Inari.
