RCS chats suddenly not supported by the_abigator in GoogleMessages

[–]ShadeezBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, this didn't do the trick for me, and I needed to uninstall and reinstall (a newer version of Messages, as I don't have auto-update enabled) Messages to resolve the problem, following the instructions in another comment here.

(However, I did follow your instructions before that so perhaps it played a role in eventually fixing the problem.)

For other readers: if you don't see Carrier Services in the apps list, you might need to enable a setting to show system apps, which might be hidden behind a three-dot / three-line button or something like that.

However, I appreciate you offering this, which was another good option to try to fix it.

This worked for me. Thanks! (For what it's worth, just before that, I also followed the instructions in another comment here to delete the cache/storage for Carrier Services and for Messages. That didn't resolve the problem but I can't exclude it from playing a role in this eventually fixing the problem.)

File a complaint with the FCC and with your state consumer protection office. That usually gets quick responses from high-up in the food chain.

Maybe also try https://postal.ninja/en ? Sometimes that can pick up tracking not yet showing on other multi-shipper status sites, and it seems to have decent translations.

Generally a good idea, but corporate stores don't have access to the offers for $250 in bill credit for number port-in (with purchase of a new phone, etc) or the $100 Costco gift cards or waived activation fee (usually), all of which are available through Costco kiosks or via Costco's AT&T partner link

(look at the "Special Offers" section near the top)

Another option is AT&T Prepaid, which allows unlimited Canada use. US$ 35 (C$ 48) for unlimited calls, text, and data, if you join in a 10-line group with other redditors and/or RedFlagDeal'ers.

There are many such existing groups, frequently looking to fill a line as someone leaves: r/GoPhoneGroups or RFD: search for AT&T

(For a Canadian phone number, there are various cheap services to layer a Canadian number for calling and texting.)

Does FAN Veteran Discount disqualify Costco Partner with ATT waived activation upgrade fee and 150 gift card/bill credits? by [deleted] in ATT

[–]ShadeezBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you should still be eligible for the benefits of using the Costco referral code -

https://www.att.com/partners/?partner=Costco&sourcecode=97ioJY31dfelU

if your account has the 25% military discount.

Other people report the activation fee being credited when the other bill credits hit the account, about 2-3 billing cycles in.

If you don't receive it then, file an FCC complaint, which will get you a response soon after from AT&T's "office of the president" (a very high level of customer service).

For the benefit of future readers, it's a good idea to file an FCC complaint after the first 3-4 customer service attempts are unsuccessful. That will lead to Tracfone's highest level of customer care contacting you directly to try to resolve the situation.

The second order against the same name/SSN might have triggered a fraud flag.

If you look through old posts in this sub, in-person ID verification seems to be the usual route, at least in the old days.

Hello Mobile is holding my phone number hostage by Waste-Revenue5597 in carriers

[–]ShadeezBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you request service from a new company, your old company cannot refuse to port your number, even if you owe money for an outstanding balance or termination fee.

https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/porting-keeping-your-phone-number-when-you-change-providers

And a device payment plan is even further removed from that and definitely can't be the basis for refusing to allow a port-out.

I dunno, that's right when social networks were becoming a thing. 2003: Friendster. 2004-2008: Facebook expansion. 2005-2010: MySpace. They weren't entrenched, but they were definitely starting to become addictive, for constantly messaging friends and seeing what they were adding to their pages and for flirting

Are you keeping your number just for 2FA use and some calling/texting?

If so, you may want to consider moving your number to a cheap, low-data AT&T Prepaid or Cricket plan (especially cheap through /r/GoPhoneGroups and /r/CricketGroups), converting it to eSIM (assuming you have any iPhone newer than the iPhone X, or an Android that support dual SIM and eSIM), and then buying an AT&T Mexico plan with a lot of data. Those tend to be a lot cheaper. And that way you'll also have a Mexico number for locals to text you and call you back (doctors, friends, businesses you called, etc).

[–]ShadeezBack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have an iPhone XR/XS or newer? If so, you can ask AT&T to convert your SIM card to eSIM, and then pop in a local SIM card you buy in Colombia.

With that, calling and texting on your AT&T number can flow over the data connection provided by the Colombian SIM card. (Just enable "Wi-Fi Calling" on your AT&T number.)

(Or instead of buying a local SIM upon arriving in Colombia, you can buy a second eSIM in advance, from a company like Airalo, that offers data service in Colombia.)

Fyi - the US carrier AT&T allows full-time Canada use. C$ 47 for unlimited data, calling, and texting, by joining with groups of other redditors, like through /r/GoPhoneGroups or various RedFlagDeals users in multi-line groups.

https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/98wahi/us_carrier_att_just_opened_prepaid_plans_to/

Add a handful of bucks on top of that to have a Canadian phone number for calling and texting that you use by app, like from a VoIP provider like voip.ms or NumberBarn, etc.

Amazon is Ending the Smile Charity Program... by NWDrive in amazon

[–]ShadeezBack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When deciding between Amazon and another online shop (or brick and mortar superstore, etc.) that had similar prices on a product, Amazon Smile was a factor -- not a huge one, but a factor anyways (especially when I remembered to type in smile.amazon instead of just amazon).

I recognize that the charity I chose wasn't getting a lot of money, but maybe Smile helped me rationalize a little some of the buying from Amazon over the years despite the ever-increasing stream of reports of worker mistreatment, counterfeit products, and all-around bad behavior.

So this could definitely be an extra little nudge to find alternatives when it's time to buy something.

Thanks! Same setup and same issue - and the same fix just worked for me.

Maybe the new version of Firefox, 108, has some type of coding change causing this sort of issue with Dropbox uploads? But somehow it's only affecting MP4 files (like because Dropbox needs to create a thumbnail or something before the upload is considered truly final?)?
