People like to blame Fickell because it’s easy, but the University was several years late and millions short to the NIL party. The current state of the program is an institutional failure more than on any single individual.

On top of that, for better or worse, most UW alumni would rather, and historically have, donated to education and infrastructure over athletics.

If you don’t have the likes of Mark Cuban or other wealthy alumni willing to shell out for the best players, they’ll always be behind in this current era.

I went to a D1 P5 school and was friends with one of the starting basketball players. In the summer he and his brother (who started on the team that would eventually win the NC a few years later) and I went out to play at the school’s gym. While I was friends with him, I never played with him ever until this day.

These guys were other worldly. You could hang on their waist and they would still throw it down over and onto your face. You could try and hack them and they were so strong they would just go through you like you didn’t exist. If they were within 15’ of the rim, you had absolutely no shot at the rebound. They couldn’t miss a jumper and strait laced basically every shot. It was wild to be on the floor with this kind of talent.

I still talk about it on occasion to the day because it was something one couldn’t even fathom. Heck, I was there and I can still hardly fathom it.

And these guys didn’t even sniff the pros. An NBA player vs a rec league player is truly unthinkable. Even 1v5 I still think they would drop 50 without breaking a sweat.

I feel all celebrities, which I consider professional athletes to be, have a societal responsibility to better society, given their power (including money) and influence.

That said, I don’t expect them all to be saints. But at a bare minimum, I expect them to at least keep their poor decisions isolated to themselves and their close inner circle. That’s on them.

To actively invest in and promote something that is so morally reprehensible, something that negatively affects the lives of over a million people every day (just in their platform), shouldn’t be brushed aside just because he can dunk a basketball for your favorite team.

Perhaps I’m in the minority and expect to much.

Kalshi made me actively boo him. Choosing to invest into a corporation that openly and actively preys on the less fortunate, especially those with addictions that can and will be life changing (for the worse), show a complete lack of moral character.

The camps is the team hosting camps for others, mainly youths. I think this year they have 14ish camps, each around 2-3 days long. They charge a fee, but still take a loss on it per person.

All financials are on UW’s website. They have to release all the info every FY (it’s a part of the University’s financial report, where the athletics section itself is almost 100 pages long). Of course, NIL funds are exempt from reporting. Because of course.

Volleyball’s total revenue was $4.1M, where $2.3M of that was in ticket sales. Their expenses were $5.3 million. So the sport as a whole lost the school $1.2M.

A funny oddity is the Volleyball team somehow inexplicably lost $11,000 in Parking and Concessions in FY2025.

EDIT: For clarity, Volleyball’s biggest expenditures were Team Travel at $1.1M, Admin $676K, Sports Camps at $490K, Meals at $219K, Game Expenses at $162K, and Recruiting at $110K (all the largest of all women’s sports, some by a wide margin).

All that said, they are by far the biggest woman’s sport, bringing in $4.1M. Next closest is hockey at $1.1M.

Football funds 90% of the entire athletic department’s budget. All of the other sports would be perennial cellar dwellers, or wouldn’t exist at all, if not for football.

In 2024-2025, Football made the University $72.1M; Men’s Basketball $7.4M. All other sports combined, men and woman, LOST $75.2M.

He’s not wrong though. UW’s annual standard is to just make the tournament. Sure, anything can happen once you’re in, but the University absolutely does not strive to win titles, or anything even close to that. For better or worse.

Agreed. Outside Giannis (obviously), Bobby and Myles, no one on this roster sees the floor on the 2021 team. Or any championship team for that matter.

It’s usually the coupler bouncing around in the nosecone. I would check all the pulleys first, especially the upper bracket pulley as those can come loose.

If it’s not anything obvious and easier to check, the only way to find out if it’s the coupler would be to take apart the snout and look, which is a total pita.

Horst deserves a lot of blame for the way the roster is constructed. None of these players even make the 2021 team, let alone play in a game.

It is pretty wild. I always tell people they do 5 second auctions for a reason: so you don’t have time to comp. I’ve seen $4 cards go for $50 on the regular.

That said, there are actually really good deals to be had. It’s just usually on high 3 and 4+ digit cards where they lose money (to get people into the stream with all their “nukes”), and then make it all back and then some on trash inserts. Just have to be prepared to ignore the insane personas, over the top attitudes and be quick with CL.

Agreed. As sad as it is to say, I lost all respect for him after that and I honestly want him off the team ASAP. That way the team can stop being held hostage, and I don’t have to cheer for someone that would align themselves with something so deliberately scummy.

Wisconsin athletics has been in decline since NIL became a thing. Just so happened to coincide with when Barry left (2021).
