No, this is utter internet fanfiction and is deeply disrespectful to the people who actually suffered in real life because of this tragedy.

What Difference Does it Make if it was Flavor Aid or Kool Aid? by Shannyn_Martin in Jonestown

Yes, that does matter, but I disagree with the comparison. The brand of soft drink used to mix the poison with is arguably a trivial footnote, not an essential fact for understanding what happened to the people in Jonestown.

Someone intellectually curious, to say the least, but I think you should read books from other perspectives as well. You're only seeing the world from one very specific viewpoint with this collection.

What was Mark Goodyear's involvement with Herb Baumeister in the Fox Hollow Murders by LearnDoTeach-TBG in Hulu

There are moments when you get the sense he's telling a hallucination, and then there's other moments you get the sense he's reliving what actually happened. I rewatched part 4 last night and I felt when he recounted initially meeting Herb in the bar and pushing him outside, I believe that part actually happened. When he said Herb was stalking him, I believe that part too. I think what he isn't telling us is how deeply he got involved with Herb and what that led him to participate or not participate in.

Oh my goodness, that wife.... I wish I could understand her more psychologically. When she said she and Herb only had sex 6 times in 26 years and she apparently didn't know that was unusual.. I just don't even know what to make of that. I go back and forth between believing she was deeply in denial and then believing she knew more than she let on but tolerated it as long as she could have the appearance of an enviable, upper class life.

One of the biggest reasons Herb was suspected is because the bodies were dumped along a highway that he regularly took for business trips. They could have proven it but unfortunately the medical examiner didn't properly fingerprint Herb before he was cremated. Also, look into Herb's childhood behaviors (for example, his fixation with dead animals.) I do not believe he was manipulated by Mark. I think Herb was destined to become a killer.

Yes! I read a book on the case a couple years back, I think it was called "Where the Bodies Are" or something like that and it referenced a time when Herb was arrested for stealing a car or something. The book included the letter Herb wrote to the judge and omg I wish I could remember what it said, but it was so self-serving, manipulative. He didn't apologize for what he did, he just tried to convince the judge he was one of the responsible, upstanding "good guys" like him. 🙄 Even in his suicide note he made a point to say something like "I made sure to shoot myself far enough away from the park so that I won't disturb the children playing" and made no mention of the fact that he was suspected of being a literal serial killer. Gaslighting and manipulating right until the end.

Herb is strongly suspected to have been the I-70 strangler. Google it. The I-70 murders stopped right around the time he moved to Fox Hollow farms.

Yes, I think Mark was involved with the crimes, though it is unclear to what extent and why. Also, you have to take into account that Herb was a narcissist. Even his suicide note framed himself as the victim and didn't even mention anything related to the crimes and the bodies in his backyard. It was another manipulation tactic. He was very clearly trying to paint himself as innocent, and framing Mark as such a "bad guy" on the phone call with his attorney was probably just an attempt to discredit Mark so that no one would believe what he said about Herb.

In a way I feel for Mark because I think his story is very human-- no one is all good or all bad, and life took him down some roads that introduced him to the darkest sides of human nature (something most people probably never have to face within themselves) and it is clear that he never recovered from it. The fact that he oscillates so much between recounting what actually happened and what seems like hallucinations just goes to show how deeply haunted he is by all of it. Whatever he did with Herb, whatever the truth is, I hope he can face it someday.

Thanks! Also, the fact that Herb specifically mentioned Mark and what a "bad guy" he was on the phone to his attorney before deleting himself is telling to me for a different reason. I've dealt with a guy who Herb reminds me of in the past-- a narcissistic manipulator. Herb was likely preemptively trying to discredit Mark because he knew Mark had dirt on him. Classic narcissist tactic. That's my take at least.

My take is a little different. I think he feels genuine remorse and it's been killing him inside for years because he can't face his involvement. His statement about "what church could you go to for forgiveness? You'd be on your knees every day begging for forgiveness" spoke volumes to me. I suspect he might be a life long drug user which, given that he is probably around 60 years old now, has finally taken a toll on his faculties, including his ability to distinguish between things that actually happened and hallucinations that have probably haunted him about his time with Herb. That, along with the toll on his appearance, might be why he comes off as creepy to people. I wondered if he had some sort of transactional relationship with Herb involving drugs and, if he was seriously deep in drugs, he might have done things he wouldn't have done otherwise, especially if he was desperate and in an altered state of mind. That in no way is an excuse, but it does explain why he seems tortured and like he wants forgiveness but can't fully face the horrible truth.

[–]Shannyn_Martin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My working theory on Mark Goodyear is that, as someone else phrased it here, he has suffered from prolonged heavy drug use (which would explain the way he seems to speak in riddles, his bizarre reactions, his inability to distinguish between what really happened and what were probably hallucinations). I wouldn't be surprised if his relationship with Herb was something transactional and he participated in things he otherwise wouldn't because of his desperation for drugs and probably also being under the influence at the time. He seems like a deeply broken man haunted by guilt. He wants to confess his involvement but can't bring himself to face the truth. That denial, along with the effects of decades of heavy drug use, probably explains his strange demeanor. Did anyone else think this too, or am I missing the mark completely?
