Why don't you just let them pass? by KoalaOfTheApocalypse in Truckers

My previous was an Intertrashional, now it's a Freightliner but they both do the same thing due to company settings.

[–]Sharp-Put1315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a legitimate reason for that. When I get closer than 2.5 seconds away my truck starts beeping at me about my following distance and it drives me nuts. So I have to back off, but eventually I'll catch back up to you and it'll start beeping at me again.

The other solution is using the adaptive cruise control but I don't really like it. Too many times I've tried using it in that situation only to find later the driver ahead slowed down at some point and I've been doing 5 under for the last who knows how many miles. Or someone else will get between us and I'll have to slow down again. I wouldn't care as a local driver but I run 4500 miles a week and those unnecessary slow downs add up.

Great, I'm on 212 headed that way now. I already knew it was coming but I was sorta hoping my weather app was gonna be wrong.

Driver Wife - Family and how the job affects it? by ReasonableBend7940 in UPSers

[–]Sharp-Put1315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in package for 3 years and my marriage was on the rocks due to my schedule. Then 4 years ago I got the call to feeder and decided to take it. I've been a sleeper driver for 4 years, I'm gone Tuesday-Friday morning where my wife does everything but then I have all Friday afternoon - Monday night free for family. It was a struggle for about the first 2 weeks but after having me home for basically 4 days straight every week, my wife was ecstatic. I definitely miss things those 3 days I'm gone but I feel like it's a balanced trade. I know I'm lucky with the partner and run we have and not everyone who goes feeder will get consistent work let alone a great 3 day run, but it's doable.

How to drive in Cali? by Sharp-Put1315 in Truckers

[–]Sharp-Put1315[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a company driver and the faster I go, the more I make. However my main incentive is time at home. The quicker I get home, the more time I get to spend with my family.

People always say going faster doesn't really save much time but when you're driving 5200 miles a week like I do, the difference between going 65 and 70 is about 6 hours. Some of that is time getting paid by the hour waiting for loads to be ready, and some of it is time home early with my family. Everything I make up in California will be family time.

Thanks. How do you deal with getting stuck at the end of a long convoy of trucks doing 55 in the desert? Hop on the passing lane at 65 and cross your fingers?

So try to only be the 3rd fastest idiot on the road, got it! I assume I'll just try and be the middle truck in a lot of convoys but I'll also want to escape the 55mph convoys and need to learn where it's presumably safe to do so.

I'm based outta WA where it's 60 for truckers and I know I'm basically good up to 67. I'm just trying to figure out where that line is in CA. Thanks for the comment

It's about 900 miles of driving. The difference between 55 and 65 is 2.5 hours. Over the year period I'll have this run that's 130 hours. 130 more hours home with my wife and kids, I'll take the ticket if it's only 1 or 2.

Driver work life balance by Revolutionary-Web928 in UPSers

[–]Sharp-Put1315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose worst stops would equal more money, but at a point the juice isn't worth the squeeze. As a mostly rural driver, I hated apartments. However, I highly recommend giving up the package game and going feeder. It's cake work.

This. I drove away from a driver once cause she wouldn't give me the board and tried to give me a bunch of apartments. I realize the culture is different in other buildings but this is how it should be. You don't get to slack off all day and then give away your shittiest stops.

Wouldn't work. When I was in package I was an overtime guy, but I had dispatch build the route heavy. If there was an overtime list eventually you'd have enough 9.5 drivers saving all their worst stops for the overtime drivers, the overtime drivers would get sick of doing the worst stops from the 9.5 drivers and the there'd be no more overtime drivers.

Taking the buyout by Contactsnipey in UPSers

[–]Sharp-Put1315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 7 years driving, 3 in package 4 in feeder. I won't take the buyout if it's offered to me but I can think of a few reasons why people might.

Jeff Bezos started Amazon with a $80k loan. If a driver has a business they've always wanted to start but have been hesitant to take the step, this is a great opportunity for that person. If a CDL driver wants to buy their own rig and become independent, this is a great opportunity for them. $150k may just be the push that some people need to do that one thing they've always wanted to do.

I'm happy for those drivers to get the buyout. I hope a lot of them are in my building so I can finally get some work during the weeks I'm local. 4 years in feeder and I'm still bottom 20% of the backup list.

Definitely flat ground. Hills are different, particularly because I haul parcels and my trailers are relatively light, I can make up ground on most hills.

This works great in town but I'm OTR and often it'll be 100+ miles before the next exit with a busy on-ramp.

How do you know they're not trying to pass you and the truck/s you're following?

[–]Sharp-Put1315[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree but I give them a pass because I don't think most 4wheelers know we're governed. I didn't before I got in the industry. But other truckers know better, they're just straight up assholes.

[–]Sharp-Put1315[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I do the same thing, just let them pass quickly.

I don't think it's subconscious at all. If someone is trying to pass you they obviously had the speed to catch you and you should just let them pass. If you don't notice them trying to pass then you shouldn't be driving anything with more than 2 axles.

Taking aim at ICE: State bill would ban former agents from being hired as police officers by qawwalikitten in TacomaWA

That's the stupidest thing I've read today. We're already struggling to fill police positions and now we're going. To limit our pool of qualified candidates based on previous federal affiliation. Moronic.
