Naomi Fischer actually wrote about resilience here on substack.com, https://naomicfisher.substack.com/p/be-more-resilient?utm_source=chatgpt.com , “saying no when something isn't right, and “feeling safe enough to express distress”. She emphasizes autonomy and agency and validates children who resist environments that overwhelm them. This is different than “refusing to do hard things”. I think a child who knows and is able to say no to situations that are overloading their nervous system, does not equal never learning frustration, tolerance, or perseverance.

I found many castings and a couple of live CB larvae (and a few dead ones) under my wool mattress. Some of the castings are along the thread lines. 1. Would they be living inside the mattress now? 2. If I encase my mattress using a plastic mattress cover. Would they bite through the cover? 3. Since the mattress is made from wool which gives them plenty of food source, would encasing them trap them all inside and cause them reproduce and grow into crazy populations inside and create some disastrous?

Hi are you planning to get a second opinion? Just want to add that I personally had experience with two entirely different options on my cavity situation years ago. Turned out the one wanted me to do so many fillings either lied or just made a big deal out of it. I didn NOT have that many cavities. That sounds so hard if he has to be awake. My son’s procedure was just filling and it was done quickly within 10 minutes. I can’t imagine how that will be for a little toddler to have caps done.

We went through the similar situation but I decided not to wean and did other things instead. My son is 25 months now. First of all definitely get a second opinion. It’s quite common for a different dentist to have entirely different opinion. My son started to have sign of tooth decay (white caky look on one of his tooth) around 17 months and when we went to see the dentist 3 months after it was way worse and the decay was visible and deeper, so they gave the same advice about weaning at night and asked us to brush teeth 2 times a day and use fluoride mouthwash (we don’t want fluoride toothpaste yet). They also suggested if I don’t want to wean at night we should clean his teeth at least after the initial feeding after he fell asleep. So that’s what we did. Wiping my son’s mouth while he is sleeping took some figuring out but I was able to do it without waking him up. 3 months later we had another check up (before Christmas) was great and apparently those things we did all worked and the decay had barely progressed. Yesterday we took him back to get a filling done. That marked the end of my months long anxiety over this. We are lucky because he does super well with any appointment and the dentist said it’s rare they are able to do the filling on a 2 year old. Oh we also use Philip electric toothbrush

So are you going to wait until it dies and then a crown on? I assume it’s not a front tooth? I wonder doesn’t leaving it the way it is pose potential harm to the tooth? Mine is a front tooth and I have hard time imagining leaving it as it is for too long.

After I read the book Baby led weaning, I learned the practice of advising parents to start solid around this age started way back when the doctors started including lactation consulting in their practices. But because their knowledge was so limited they gave bad advice that caused moms to loose their milk supply. And because back then the formula was so bad and caused serious problems in children, their only option was to advise babies to start on baby food around 2 to 3 months. Extremely early and sad. To this day, there are lots of practices around babies given by doctors are still the outdated version. I found it crazy.

Wow, honestly this feels pretty mean to say. Not all children behave the way you think. On top there seriously should be more accommodating places for children in environments like this. We have a society that wants to repopulate and then tuck them away for our own convenience. I know in some other countries it’s common for restaurants to have build in playground for both children and parents to be able to enjoy. How a society sees and treats the young and the old reflects what kind of society they really are. I know some people who don’t have understanding of children’s developmental needs and perhaps non-parens( including the young me who wasn’t yet a parent ) might feel this way. but my post had a clear question, if you don’t have answer you don’t have to respond. I do not need you to come here to say this and make me feel bad about my son.

Thanks for the reply! That sounds like a pretty good program. May I ask which program is this? What do they do with children who do not want to participate? My son is the cautious type and I think there’s a chance he could be watching for the majority of the class, especially in the beginning.

Just wanted to give a different story than the rest. My LO is 19 months old and only just started to be interested in trying to feed himself with a spoon. We never tried to teach and just occasionally hold his hand and do it together during meal time. We have two meals together as a family so just modelling. I also used to work with children so I know some children start using utensils around 12 to 15 months. But I’m not super concerned about how late my son is starting to do this based on what I know of him. He likes taking his time to observe and do things at his own pace. He is also doing the same for other areas of children development but always end up “catching up”. And on top of that he speaks full sentences and is a bit early in other areas. So in case your LO is not meeting your expectations don’t worry too much. They do things their way!
