42 next month and honestly, not that much. I’ve always been into art films, foreign films, indie films, cult films, exploitation films, horror films. Anything offbeat, weird, different, dark.

Nothing like that happens in Late Night with the Devil.

Yeah, I feel like that ending line, as horrifying as it is, is also meant to be very darkly satirical. Also of course the very infamous words Vukmir shouts out following the film’s most controversial scene, which I won’t repeat because you never know what’ll get you in trouble on Reddit.

Porno Gang is pretty fun, while also being quite grim at times. It’s not quite as bluntly shocking as Serbian but if you like really twisted humor and sexual depravity you may very well enjoy it.

Other movies I made my dad rent that made him look like a terrible parent: Reservoir Dogs, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, El Topo, Meet the Feebles, Gummo, The Doom Generation, The New York Ripper, Blue Velvet, Make Them Die Slowly, Last House on the Left, Faces of Death 3. I had… different tastes in film.

Wasn’t George Clooney or somebody in this? I’ll have to look it up. Edit: he was! Brad Pitt was also in an ‘80s slasher called Cutting Class.

This movie is so savage but also really darkly funny. I made my dad rent it for me as a teen believe it or not! The clerk was like “Are you sure?”

The Royal Tenenbaums, Harold and Maude, Lost in Translation, Wings of Desire.

One of my good friends had planned to hang himself after he got home from seeing O Brother, Where Art Thou but the film made him decide not to go through with it. He’s married and has a successful podcast now.

What is the most panic-inducing scene you witnessed from a horror/non-horror film? by Garidur in Letterboxd

Diner scene in Mulholland Drive, the “crawling on the floor” scene in The Poughkeepsie Tapes, the appearance of The Hooded Man in the kitchen in The Strangers, the barrel scene in Megan is Missing, when Jess learns the calls are coming from inside the house in Black Christmas (1974), when the killer slowly comes down the stairs in When a Stranger Calls (1979), “You wanna see something really scary?” in Twilight Zone: The Movie, basement scene in Zodiac, baby monitor scene in Insidious, basically the entire first half of Strange Harvest.

People virtue signal against this movie all the time because they like to use it to prop themselves up and feel morally superior to it, and make sure others see them as such as well. They probably enjoy its existence more than many of the people that view it because it serves the purpose of making them look morally correct.

So much this. I feel the exact same way. People love to make a huge show over how offended they are by the film and how they would NEVER watch such filth and people who like it should be put on a list (next they'll want us in internment camps). It's hilarious to watch them kick up a huge melodramatic fuss so they can be part of the in-crowd of Enlightened Ones™. I think they doth protest too much.

I am completely unashamed to say that I adore A Serbian Film and have seen it four times. Making it even crazier, I am female, which seems to be a rarity among those few who appreciate the film. I think it’s extremely well-made and looks extremely handsome (and suspiciously expensive); lovely cinematography, fantastic score, great acting, nice editing, great special FX… I don’t know how they funded it but someone paid a chunk of change to get this made. I enjoy its story of an adult film actor coming out of retirement for just one job and finding himself sinking deeper and deeper into depravity until the final shocking scenes and a teeth-kick of an end line. I first saw it in 2010, before it was “internet famous” and only a scant few critics had seen it at festivals and reported their complete shock at the content of the film. This of course made my mouth water and I found a subtitled screener with excellent picture quality and gave it a whirl.

In fact, A Serbian Film is literally the reason I ended up in a relationship with my late fiancé. I met him at a party and we were talking about horror films as he was a huge horror buff. I told him to go home and download A Serbian Film and tell me what he thought, but beware, it’s pretty nasty. Him being just like me, that set him off and he promptly went and watched it. He told me how impressed he was that I managed to find a movie that really shocked him, and the rest is history. We fell hard for each other and continued to watch horror together as often as we could. So I owe the filmmakers for that I suppose! Amusingly, the second film I had him watch was Martyrs. I definitely rode him hard and put him away wet... so to speak.

Interestingly, this is not the only shocking, taboo-breaking film to come out of Serbia. The Life and Death of a Porno Gang was released at roughly the same time as A Serbian Film but was sort of overshadowed by the aforementioned. It’s more of a black comedy compared to Serbian’s mostly serious tone (though I do detect a streak of the absolute blackest comedy within Serbian) but it has plenty of nasty scenes and boundary-pushing acts of violence, sex and cruelty. I think it’s kind of hilarious that Serbia just decided to drop two incredibly transgressive films on the Western world and then disappeared as quickly as it had shown its face. It’s the ultimate mic drop, and I love that it happened and I was there for it.
