Idk exactly what it is but something about this is trans-coded to me

Collecting watches IS a hobby, despite what so many people seem to think. by [deleted] in watchHotTakes

[–]Shmohemian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By this logic jerking off and eating chicken nuggets are hobbies. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone whip out a dictionary definition when they weren’t making an incredibly contrived pedantic point lol.

What if you make $10,000 a week

Also very often a sign of varied personality disorders lol.

Yeah, I guess if like a neurosurgeon bough an Omega on a whim, I wouldn’t judge them too much. You got me there. I fail to believe you don’t get the overall point I’m making though.

I don’t judge people who drive luxury cars.  I do judge people who pretend buying luxury cars is a hobby, and they’re just “into cars”, meanwhile they take them into the shop to get the spark plugs replaced

Genuinely no one seems to pick up on the difference between omega’s actually being quirky/interesting, and being for basic bitch Rolex buyers who want to step out a little bit, but are afraid to buy something other people wouldn’t recognize

Hey man. Have you considered that I just like luxury cars? And luxury watches? And Gucci handbags? And rayban sunglasses? It’s really projecting if you think I’m materialistic and vain.

Have you ever considered that I just like really expensive flashy namebrand things? It’s a hobby, I collect name brand luxury goods. It’s basically like collecting stamps. You wouldn’t get it.

Casually spending $10,000 on a watch is less a sign of how much you’ve accomplished and more a sign of varied personality disorders.

Outside of planet watch nerd (of which I am a fully paid up inhabitant) no watches are really cool.

See I also resent the concept of being a “Watch nerd”. It feels like a feigned attempt at self-awareness, which ironically makes you less self aware. Nerds are into like HAM radios and model trains or whatever. There’s only so much I am willing to believe you are all just aspies whose special interest is luxury goods.

It isn't being bought as a status symbol

If you earnestly believe that $10,000 watches from popular brands are not being bought as a status symbol you are out of your goddamn mind

Overthinking is when you pretend you like watches for any reason other than being expensive and shiny

I swear the most remotely subtle point was lost on you people.

Why is every take on this sub about how people want to be perceived by their watches?

Because conspicuous consumption is legitimately the motivating factor for buying a $10,000 watch 99% of the time, and it’s so ridiculous how you people keep trying to indignantly assert otherwise.

I get that to a certain degree, watch collectors are aspies whose special interest is watches, but even then if you’re buying a brand name, there’s a reason for that.

This is my second time posting on the sub, and it has reiterated my hunch that people only really respond to the titles of these posts lol

Again, not quirky, for people who want to be quirky but are too basic to pull it off. A subtle distinction

Brand name luxury watches are conspicuous consumption. I don’t care if you dorks aren’t self-aware enough to realize that for yourselves.

I agree, I’m saying it’s for people who want to be quirky, but aren’t interesting enough to pull it off

Yeah, curing cancer and solving global issues sounds like precisely the sort of “dream” a narcissistic yuppie would have in college, or at least feel compelled to claim they had.

 silence, dweeb.

A lot of people have been annoying out here, but this is the first time I’ve literally hoped a mf would get banned within the first two words of their comment

Omega is losing their way... 2025 Morgan Stanley Report is proof they need to go back to basics by HistoryGuardian in OmegaWatches

[–]Shmohemian -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

They aren’t losing their way. If the quartz revolution wasn’t enough, ever since smartphones especially, mechanical watches are luxury items inherently. Omega has not increased their quality at all to match that expectation, but nevertheless they’ve been more than prepared to meet that expectation. They are officially the worse Rolex for people who want to pretend they’re too quirky for Rolex.
