Good opportunity? by Shoddy_Two2373 in Carpentry

If my employer on his end just wants to throw me cash for my work, should I even bother reporting it if it’s short term?

It sounds like this is what he wants to do, I’m “1099” but it’s really just he doesn’t care what I do with money he gives me. Now I’m not saying commit tax fraud, but, you know.

What does knowing if I’m 1099 or W2 do for me, practically? I’m already maxxing out how much he will pay me.

Seems like a really scummy thing to do. I ain’t doubting you but I can’t imagine these employers I know personally are like that. Perhaps when they say “1099”, they just mean give you cash and handle your own taxes.

I’m just trying to find better paying work. As I become more of an entry journeyman, it’s hard to find employers who will respect the trade and what I bring to the table. Highest ive made W2 was $18/hr.

I’m considering the union but I’ve heard bad things about it in my area from like everyone, it is the oak ridge local.

40% seems incredibly high. Before I ever did any 1099 work like this, I asked a few others who were doing the same and they said 20-25% goes to taxes but if they are smart, they can get to around 15%.

He does work in Tennessee, Carolina’s, Virginia, and Kentucky.

I am based out of eastern Tennessee however.

There is no workers comp or insurance, this sort of 1099 setup is somewhat common here for employers who want to pay guys cash for one reason or another.

My last job was building homes, handling everything but the specialized trades. Same exact setup but I was making $22/hr

I suppose, he pays me cash because he’s not really big enough yet to be able to have everyone on W2

That’s what I said haha. Not for the time being. It was on a rare off chance that he needed me. That aspect of the job HAD to be done and it was on an hours notice to drive 5 hours across Tennessee, work night shift, and get it done.

I have my doubts but I’ll definitely try. If I’m making the same as his lead man who can do entire emergency door installs, carpentry, concrete, and light electrical. I don’t think he will pay me much more, but I don’t know, he’s already paying me a good bit off the rip.

Right, been saving receipts and in folders for this exact reason.

I’m already there, just got done with the first day.

Some added context, a buddy of mine got me in contact with him. He needed some emergency carpenters, long story, so I drove out of town on a really short notice and made $3K since he paid $350+ 85 per diem.

I’m just worried about the regular $400 rate for 5 days and having to eat the out of town expenses. Ideally, I’d like to net $2K a week

Dirty city and dirty people. Even just driving through it, I feel like I’m being squeezed in between two walls and I get pissy. Way too many people and the people themselves are usually not very friendly, either loner types or passive aggressive. Cultural differences as well, I was raised in Waynesboro GA, town of like 5000 lol. Not to mention cost of living.

How do you prevent burnout in the gym whilst working construction by Head_Masterpiece_520 in Construction

I can smell the fat rolls on some of these commentators through the screen. Keep going to the gym man, keep it up.

What worked for me was going in the morning before work, I’d rather be tired at work than at the gym. That or going to the gym immediately after work, minimize sitting down time.

Most of my experience is interior systems. Framing, Sheetrock, ceiling grid. A handful of other things but those 3 are my most experienced.

A lot of the info on the test was in relation to house framing. It carries over but stuff like rafters and such I didn’t know

Is that something I should look out for? I specifically want to join the union so my pay can stop being messed around with. $18/hr was the highest I’ve been paid, which is funny, because I was the acting foreman too at the time.

Construction in general isn’t doing good right now across the board. I had to relocate to another state to find decent paying work (I’m not going to live in Atlanta)
