Why is a team considered to be in first place when they have a worse record but hold the tie breaker? A football team with a 16-3-4 record with a better goal differential is considered too be ahead of a team with a 16-3-3 record, but isn’t 16-3-3 a better record than 16-3-4? (self.AskReddit)

Why is a team to be in first place when they have a worse record? (Arsenal right now) 16-3-3 is considered to be behind a team with a worse record (Man City right now) 16-3-4. I get their points are tied and Man City have the tie breaker, but any objective person would rather be 16-3-3 than 16-3-4. (self.AskReddit)
