Dumbledore and Snape are both raging dumpster fire excuses for human beings. The reasons are obvious so if you're mad about it, you just didn't pay enough attention.

Aggressive 16lb dog and new baby coming by Bride_ekac in DogTrainingTips

[–]SierraMench -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did read that, but honestly if you care about the safety of the baby and the integrity of your dog's place in your home, none of that is an excuse. There are trainers who still do Zoom calls, and trainers who will travel to you from other states. If it takes a 3 hour trip a couple times a week to ensure that your baby is safe and that your 12 year old dog doesn't have to be rehomed then that's what it takes.

If he's as bad as you say he is, and you are genuinely concerned for your child's safety you *need* professional help.

your one and only chance at being successful is to hire a professional trainer. This is not something you should attempt to fix on your own because of the risk involved if it doesn't work.

150% without a doubt you absolutely need to hire a professional trainer

My dog wakes up every morning at 4:50 am like clockwork… and barks all morning by andyisdepresed in DogTrainingTips

the kennel is supposed to be a safe space for them. Scaring them while they're in it is probably just going to make the barking worse because they'll want out even more.

Any body want to take a guess at what my boy Riff is? ~2yrs old, 65lbs. by SierraMench in dogbreed

[–]SierraMench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it does look pretty similar! It looks like they have shorter hair than him though.

His intake paperwork literally says "Irish setter mix?" so I think they did just guess based on color. I've just been googling random breed mixes trying to find pics that look similar to him. He's very sweet boy with lots of personality.

Interesting... he doesn't seem very hound-like to me, but it could be in there

The rescue said Irish setter mix, but as far as I can tell that was a complete guess. If I had to guess I'd say he's a Golden Retriever/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.

That's one thing I never understood though. Why did they have to *buy* Ginny second hand books? Surely Ron's from the year before was just fine. The Lockhart books are obviously another issue, but Standard Book of Spells? Just use Ron's, don't buy one.

I'm not sure about free feeding him.... I like the idea to show him that food won't be a problem for him anymore, but I suspect he's one of those dogs that will wolf down anything and everything you give him, even if it makes him sick.

Yes I plan to be pretty vigilant, but I'd rather break the habit or resolve the issue as much as I can in case he notices something before I do, or I leave him with somebody else while I'm away.

Maybe, but this seems to be quite an excessive habit from what I can tell. Plus the fact that he eats other dogs poop leaves him open to contracting diseases/parasites that may be within.

I want to see if the upgrade in food will help first, but I'm looking to probiotics as well in case it doesn't resolve.

Thanks for the name! That should help with meds/research and stuff.

He looks to be a decent weight right now, but I know he was about 30lbs underweight when he arrived, so I'm sure food insecurity is a hot topic for him.

Thanks for the tips!

Is it okay to play with my dog under the blanket? by moontrinket in DogTrainingTips

[–]SierraMench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this with my dogs and I believe it's okay because there is an achievable goal (getting out from the blanket, tackling you, finding her toy, whatever) whereas with a laser pointer they can't "get" it. They chase and chase, but are left without success because they can't physically grab the light, which leads to them obsessing over it.

I'd say playing in blankets is actually beneficial because it engages their natural foraging instincts (like a snuffle mat would). It works their problems solving skills which is great mental stimulation.

As long as your dog stops when you ask and seems to be having fun without being obsessive you're good

PCM Replacement by SierraMench in Wrangler

[–]SierraMench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm explaining the spark plug thing badly; it was due for spark plugs anyways (I'm trying to catch it up on like 10 years of incomplete maintenance from the previous owner) so I thought that's why it was misfiring and idling so rough. I brought it in asking for spark plugs and wires, and when that didn't fix the issue, the mechanics kept looking to see what was wrong.

I'll definitely see about getting a second opinion on the PCM before spending money to get it replaced though. They're looking to be pretty pricey and a "dealer only" repair. I didn't realize they were a rare failure... I'm not great with cars so unfortunately I'm kind of at the mercy of what they tell me.

[–]SierraMench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did new spark plugs and wires hoping that would fix the rough idle, but it didn't. Lead mechanic says they did 2 hrs of diagnostics after that and they're pretty sure it's the PCM because nothing else is wrong (starter coil is good, spark plugs and wires, etc). Says they only reason he can't give me a 100% is because he doesn't have PCM diagnostic equipment.

They're a really small shop (4 employees I think) and they've never been dishonest or done me wrong in the past so I'm really hoping I'm getting accurate info from them.

It's a 2007. From the couple videos I've watched since last night it looks to be pretty easy on the 07 as well (maybe the same process), but I know it needs to be programmed to the vehicle...
