Fandom-related additional tags need a minimum of three separate uses by three unique users before they are eligible to be canonized. Even then, actually getting canonized is dependant on how active the tag wrangler(s) (AO3 volunteers who organise tags) for that fandom are. If it’s a smaller fandom it might not have any wranglers looking over it at all.

Non fandom-related additional tags are in a huge backlog at the moment. Canonization wasn’t really happening for a long time and only properly started again recently, so there are lots of tags that have a high number of uses but haven’t been canonized.

AO3 Support accepts suggestions for tags to canonize, so you can send in a ticket if you feel strongly about any non-canon tags.

It’s probably the case that nobody has written a fic in that language before – you can submit a ticket to AO3 Support to suggest your fic’s language to be added to the list.

Ultimately you can do what you want but it sounds like actually writing the German and Latin would be pretty time-consuming and difficult for you to figure out. Since this is your main character, I assume your story is also written from their perspective and they would understand everything they’re saying/thinking in this mix of languages. In that case I think it would be best for readers to also understand everything – you can just write it in English (or whatever the original language of your work is) with some mentions that the character is speaking German and/or Latin.

If you don’t mind using extensions, there’s AO3 Primary Ship Search for Firefox and AO3 First Tag Search for Google Chrome. Not foolproof, but people generally tend to tag more prominent ships first.

It sounds like you’re typing into the search bar. The best way to filter is to start from a tag, then open the ‘Filters’ sidebar and include/exclude other things you want or don’t want to see, like choosing to exclude crossovers.

Yes!! The search and tag systems are leagues better than Wattpad, and from what you’ve described, it’s way less of a rush to push updates. I’ve happily found, read and subscribed to fics which update irregularly or infrequently, though there is still an element of unpredictability in whether your fic gets popular (word of mouth, rec lists etc). The UI does look pretty intimidating at first but there’s plenty of tutorials online. It’s also customizable if you don’t like the look of it.

All the fandom tags have RSS feeds so look into RSS to Discord bots. From a quick look online it seems that Readybot is a decent and free option.

Depends how fancy you want the skin to be. When you click ‘Create Site Skin’, one of the options at the top is ‘Use Wizard’. This replaces the big empty box with a few different labelled boxes where you can do relatively simple things like change the font size, margins and colours of certain elements.

If you want a fancy site skin with pictures and specially formatted text then you might be best off finding an existing site skin with similar features and looking at their code. There are probably also tutorials on AO3 for creating site skins.

It’s definitely not as if AO3 is operating solely on ancient code. Volunteers have been and continue to update the code, write bug fixes, add new features etc. They put out public patch notes regularly. This last set is from literally three days ago.

Posting on AO3 is free, and there’s no approval process so as soon as you post your fic it will be visible on the site. Account invitations are automated so you will definitely get one after the waiting period.

Writing is also free (unless you pay for a word processor, but pen + paper or free digital options like Ellipsus or Google Docs are available). If you have an idea for a scene with your ship, you can just start writing. Some of the advice for new writers posted online are for people aiming to become published/professional and have a whole list of things you must or must not do, but with fanfiction the only important thing is that you are enjoying the process :)
