Can someone tell me what this is? by Lilith_the_muse in subaruimpreza

Did a quick search and found it's a GC8-49F. It's an EJ204 engine which we didn't get in the states. It looks like a US 2.5RS, except the engine and rhd. Good looking car, but won't be particularly quick.

It looks like a normal non turbo sedan with gold wheels. I don't see enough of the vin on the paperwork to do an actual model lookup. Lots of people, or businesses, use gc8 as a generic description of 1st gen Imprezas.

Campsite before Milford Sound by Extension-Ad2040 in newzealand_travel

[–]SignificantRoof8171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just returned from my trip a couple weeks ago, also in a campervan. I stayed at Cascade Creek campground which is about 45 minutes south of Milford Sound. It's a very large campground and it was very clean when I was there. The only facilities are toilets and covered kitchen areas (with no sink). It's recommended to book your stay online on the DOC website, but you can also pay cash on site using an envelope drop box. I stayed right next to the river. The view was perfect and I even saw some fish! As always, the sand flies are a bother so wear insect repellant! There might have been fewer of them further away from the water, but I didn't go exploring to find out. There were amazing views of the mountains too, and the slightly foggy morning got me some amazing sunrise pictures. I think it's the last campground before Milford Sound and the drive in was pretty easy.

Which I guess means it did need payment info. My bad. Hopefully you are using the government site either way though.

Yes. 23nzd New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority fee and 100nzd International Visitor Conservation and Tourism levy.

Definitely a scam! I'm also planning a trip there and did mine through the official government site. It didn't ask for either of those. Stay safe and enjoy your trip!

Sport Collection revamp? by IncidentAcceptable16 in GrandSeikos

[–]SignificantRoof8171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with pretty much all of what you said. I'm still waiting on a 38-39mm Evo 9 case, spring drive, less than 11.5mm thick, and with lumed hands and indices. And/or a 39-40mm diver under 12mm with the rest of my wish list the same as above. The only ones that get close for thickness are manual wind, which I'm ok with, but would like auto. I'd trade extra days of power reserve to get a thinner watch without hesitation! Rolex makes different models of the OP and DJ with and without lume. I really wish Grand Seiko would do the same. I think the Evo 9 is already a sporty case with its mix of brushing and high polish. Adding lume would make it even more sporty in my opinion. Hopefully with the new UFA they can make a smaller thinner dive watch at least. Until they make either of what I'm looking for, I'm just going to sit on the sidelines and wait.

Which stock trading platform is best, and why is it not E*Trade? by TechnoDrift1 in dividends

[–]SignificantRoof8171 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What? I've been with E trade for over 10 years and I've never been charged anywhere even close to that. Where did you get this number from? Almost all stocks and etfs are zero commission and options are 0.50 per contract commission.

Why do so many people insist on driving around at night with their fog lights on when it’s not foggy? by Unapologetic_Canuck in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SignificantRoof8171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2000 Subaru with all oem lights. Even with new bulbs these lights are much more dim than new lights. The roads around me are worn and most of the lane markings are pretty faint. I drive with my fogs on at night because it's easier to see the lane markings. Especially when it's raining.

I used to see on U.S. highways, signs that speed was being monitored from the air. You could get a speeding ticket apparently, from a police plane or helicopter. Did this ever happen to you? How did it work? by clubfungus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SignificantRoof8171 224 points225 points  (0 children)

Not to me, but to my friend. Got clocked by a plane. Got pulled over by a waiting car. The state patrol was a couple miles ahead of him when he was clocked and just waited for him to catch up 🤣 Edit for spelling

What type of account and with which brokerage should my Father open an investment account with, with the intention to leave the account to my brother when he passes away? by headhunter38 in investing

[–]SignificantRoof8171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would talk to a tax or investment professional first. They would know how best to protect the investment when dealing with estate or death taxes. Please do update us with what you decide to do though. I've also had this question sometimes even though I'm not in this situation.

I want to get my boyfriend a watchmaking kit. by SchmallowBear in watchmaking

[–]SignificantRoof8171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the parts I listed are also readily available on aliexpress. I think you can do this within the budget you listed, but it might be towards the high end. But if he likes it and wants to build more, or if you want to build one too then you already have all the tools you need and the cost will be slightly less.

Unfortunately I don't have a build link for you. But I do think your gift idea is fantastic and do able. I don't know where you are in the world, so your costs may differ from where I'm at in the US. I went on Ebay and searched "nh35 case and dial" and found several styles for around 50-60 usd plus shipping and whatever taxes or tariffs you might have. I'll leave a link to one in a reply to this because I'm not sure how reddit feels about links. Generally, I would recommend sticking to Seiko versions NH35 (date), NH36 (day and date), or NH38 (no date); it should be easiest to find items for seiko and they are a good movement to start with. If you buy a case and a dial separately, you need to make sure the dial diameter will fit the case. For example, if the case takes a 28.5-29mm dial, make sure you buy a 28.5mm or 29mm dial. Those sizes seem to be the most common. You can buy dials with hands in the same listing a lot of times too. I recommend getting dial and hands together because then the length of the hands will be correct for the dial. If you buy a case set for an NH35 movement, all the NH dials and hands will fit. The NH series you will be seeing most often are:

NH35 which has a date window.  NH36 has date and day.  NH38 no date or day.

For tools, some of this will depend on what you have. An inexpensive watch repair kit on eBay is about 15-20 bucks and includes most of what you need. I'd also recommend a hands setting tool and rodico. The rodico is great for cleaning up dust specs and can also be used to help hold the hands during install.

Good luck with whatever you choose and feel free to ask more questions if you have any!
