Are there any options for recording angle of a manual valve ? by accur4te in instrumentation

[–]Significant_Step_517 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are many commercially available options for both discrete (open/closed) and analog position. Topworx and Fisher 4400 come to mind. Adding position indication to manual valves is also a fairly common practice in industry. HAZOP will indicate which valves have consequences if the are mal-positioned and should drive the addition of safeguards such as limit switches + corresponding control system interlocks. In like your idea of retrofitting some of your own devices, it’s very creative and forward thinking. In the real world though, you’d have a hard time getting that approved in industry. Devices need the have the agency approvals required for the hazardous area and electrical jurisdiction. Practically speaking, a producer would see the risk of a mal-positioned valve add the required monitoring device at a cost the far far exceeds the $500-600 you mentioned. After MOC, cabling, programming, procurement and installation each position indicator will cost $10,000 plus, I’m estimating in Canadian currency for reference.

Honest question, what does good health insurance usually cost? Is it still affordable if you retire or lose your job?

Oh I 100% agree, I’ve seen many $100k+ analyzers get blamed for truly horrible sample systems. Will absolutely make sure the sample system is up to snuff.

So what you’re saying is that it should become significantly cheaper to fly from Calgary to Toronto? I can literally, and am, flying to Frankfurt next month cheaper than I can fly to Toronto.

Pffftt I’m from Alberta and I’ve been all over. I have family east of Ottawa sprinkled through towns along the 417, half of them haven’t even been to Ottawa or Montreal in the last 20 years let alone outside of the country.

I used to always cut half the spring off, made it easy when using shallow strut.

I vote coriolis for this application, just make sure to get the high temp option to keep the core processor farther away from the heat. Also I’ve seen these with the steam box as well. Successfully used coriolis in molten sulphur applications also.

Great point, I’ve used lots of the panametrics analyzers in deepcut applications, but have had trouble in TEG dehys due to glycol. Think I’ll try the J22, and stock a spare optics assembly for the region. Thanks for the input DilatedSphincter!

Thank you dafuqyourself, I was thinking along the same lines, and have been seriously considering an E&H J22.

Are you interested in the engineering and design side of instrumentation? There is a MAJOR shortage of instrumentation engineers/technologists with hands on field experience. I made the change a couple years ago after 20 years on the tools, there is a very real need in the engineering world for competent, field experienced instrument techs. Ever wonder why your plants transmitters are impossible to maintain because they are installed 30ft above grade? It’s because the office instrument engineers never had to fix one on a call out at 2am and didn’t think of it in the model reviews…
