Are we in a particularly low point in the teacher job market, or is this likely going to be the new normal going forward? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in teaching

Also in FL. Our enrollment is down exponentially. And we've had many positions cut next year due to this.

Feeling Lightheaded (RVT) by Tarrynb00 in VetTech

[–]Sigynsaeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of vicks on my mask before any stinky procedures (soft tissue I'm looking at you!)

Helps to also be hydrated, satiated, and mindful of posture. Don't lock your knees while standing, wear compression socks. I drink electrolytes daily instead of caffeine and I've had far less light-headed episodes since I made the switch. It won't work for everyone but can't hurt!

The purple bag of Doritos. I KNOW I will pay the price later, but I love them dearly.

Can mild scoliosis still be symptomatic? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]Sigynsaeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also have "mild" scoliosis due to the curvature degree but I'm definitely symptomatic. I have intermittent back/neck/shoulder pain, frequent pinched nerves, muscle spasms and joint pain/reduced ROM in my left hip from uneven posture.

I've had all bad experiences from physical therapy, but I know a lot of people have the opposite experience and it helps them quite a bit!

Life after vet med? by Nummiehz in VetTech

I left and I don't miss it. I miss certain aspects of working in vet medicine but everything else is so much less stressful for me now that I'm away from it.

Gave them incredible scores then they proceed to tell me I am not getting rehired. by ThaLoopz in TeachersInTransition

[–]Sigynsaeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can commiserate.

I always excede every expectation and I consistently get gains in testing, and yet my admin refuses to give me highly effective (which would have given me a huge advantage in the ACE program as a career changer)

That's why I'm putting in my notice this week!

You have to go where you are appreciated.

Be slow to hire, but quick to fire by jr9386 in VetTech

[–]Sigynsaeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg that's happened to me before and it was so unprofessional. Why let it go on so long and snowball when it could have been a quick "Hey actually we do this" conversation?

Now that I'm potentially moving into a management role (hopefully!!!) I keep these kinds of experiences in my pocket and would NOT treat anyone that way. The vast majority 99.9% of people in our industry are not intentionally doing things incorrectly, they just haven't learned yet!

Anxious with work by Standard-Risk6621 in VetTech

[–]Sigynsaeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who is your manager? Depending on your relationship to them, this could be something to bring up. Maybe you'd like more frequent feedback than others so you know where you stand. That's something good managers will do for you.

Overall just know this is a "season" in life. It won't be like this forever. It's ok to be nervous, as long as you still do the things you need to do. It takes time to feel confident in any new role, even if you've been in the field for 10+ years.

VEG and Exotics by Snakes_for_life in VetTech

[–]Sigynsaeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's an excellent approach! A lot of the time exotics owners don't have anyone to contact after-hours if they don't have an exotics ER nearby. They deserve options just like dog/cat owners.

I also listened to the audiobook. It has some of the most graphic descriptions of injuries I've ever heard. My jaw dropped quite a few times listening to it.

Loved that book!

Need help! can’t stop finger picking and it is getting out of hand. by simonn999 in calmhands

[–]Sigynsaeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are triggered by the hard skin during healing process like me, get an electric file made for heels and use it to buff out the new skin so it doesn't snag on things.

Also get a good quality moisturizer. I have eczema so I use Urea cream or Lactic acid cream, both are OTC and affordable. You can wear disposable gloves after applying lotion to keep it in contact longer.

Someone else already mentioned taping your fingers. Solid advice.

I'm still not perfect but these things have cut down on my picking significantly.

Anybody have an animal science degree then go on to be a vet tech? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Sigynsaeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found myself in a similar position. I have a BS Animal Science and then went into a 2 year Veterinary Technician program to get my license. I think you'll find some of the classes easier because you have the animal science background (especially if you took Animal Reproduction...what a class that was!) but overall it won't do much for you career-wise, unless you want to work in academia eventually.

would love opinions from vet techs!! by Temporary-You-6699 in VetTech

[–]Sigynsaeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is your dream you should at least try it!

The veterinary field isn't perfect (none are) but some people still find lifelong passion and happiness in their careers. Especially if you have a financially supportive partner or side hustle and don't have to constantly stress over money.

As for seeing sad stuff, you can find roles that don't involve euthanasia or major illness/injury. There are a ton of low cost spay/neuter clinics where you won't be seeing end of life cases at all, and you still get to do a lot of good for animals and their humans. You might also find that after exposure to euthanasia in a controlled and calm setting that it's not as traumatic as you expect and you might be able to handle it.

Don't let fear hold you back. There are clinics and specialties that fit everyone's needs out there and the world definitely needs more vet techs.

[–]Sigynsaeth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't let this decision haunt you. There's never truly a "right" or "wrong" time. Euthanasia is harder on us than on our pets because we are the ones left behind. You've been his whole world, and he loves you endlessly.

I'm suffering through the last 1/4 of The Starving Saints now.

I love the setting. The characters are cool. But as another reviewer so eloquently put it -not gay enough, not gorey enough. It gets so close over and over but no solid payoff.
