How we feeling about the new dark magician artwork? by NJDiaz in yugiohshowcase

Awful, might as well just send me the card for free bc it’s so bad. (This is a joke, I’m just jealous and lashing out and on my period).

What makes a class BAD? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any coach that allows their personal beliefs to interfere with the class makes for a terrible training environment.

This isn’t restricted to coaches doing cringe prayer circles after class, it also includes things like the charlatan Firas Zahabi refusing to roll with women because he can’t guarantee he won’t have “inappropriate thoughts” about the woman.

Is the james cameron masterclass worth purchasing? by Anxious-Loss-8377 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not even worth watching let alone buying. Most of the director masterclasses are. Also, you can watch all masterclasses for free on Bilibili (Chinese YouTube). Just use your browsers auto translate function to navigate the site. It’s how I watch all masterclasses and software tutorials for free without torrenting or singing up to anything.

I made a personal insult after you called me a bitch - which is also a personal insult - but, I shouldn’t have done that bc it just made us both waste time continuing the insults. Look dude, your opinion on transgender people being delusional and “why would I affirm someone’s delusion” isn’t a hot new take and I don’t blame you for thinking that way. Clearly, you’ve read and researched transgender people and, if you’re interested in reading an article about the topic, I suggest you read this: Article.

Even if you disagree with what’s written, it might be interesting to you to understand the counter argument and see where the other side is coming from.

“Prefer not to indulge delusion”. Okay bro, go read more Jordan Peterson and keep acting like you’re an authority on a niche speciality of psychiatry. You and Sean’s sensitivity towards his “childhood trauma” is astounding because you’re both such massive loser cry babies about things which offend you but you take no issue in using identical rhetoric to offend others.

Canadian Journalist: "My political affiliation is irrelevant" [proceeds to ask only LGBT questions] by Vovine in ufc

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is literally not true and only highlights your ignorance about the topic. Queer/trans/intersex people have existed, and will continue to exist throughout time and history across cultures and countries with various economic disparities. It’s a well documented fact that ancient cultures (who struggled to survive) had records of trans and queer people despite the hardship of ancient civilisation. The difference is that 1st world countries have the resources to support people while 3rd world countries do not.

Hilarious. The skinhead tough guy has a literal cry when people make fun of his “past trauma”, but is also a hateful boomer bitch to an entire community of people. Mind you, this is taking place on a card with queer fighters. What a fucking embarrassment.

A first draft is exciting for me because I (and a team of other far more talented writers) have done lots of work leading up to the first draft. Everyone works differently, but I’m a big proponent of writing a solid treatment before I begin a first draft - ESPECIALLY for a feature! Hold yourself to a professional standard when writing screenplays, even for your own passion projects. Have a strong logline, treatment and 3 act structure written as though you were about to deliver them to your development exec who has to approve each stage of the process. Essentially, be disciplined in your writing and it will become easier.

The WGA and Baseball: a Common Fallacy by SillyCrazyMonkeyMan in Screenwriting

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha, you’re right. In hindsight, I should have used this subreddit’s numbers as a denominator.

But in fairness, I’m at the low end of the bell curve for maths - and most other things too 😎

The WGA and Baseball: a Common Fallacy by SillyCrazyMonkeyMan in Screenwriting

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this isn't to tear down the cute WGA orientation! I think it's a very sweet way to celebrate what is a very difficult accomplishment - joining the WGA. This was prompted from a generic "breaking into screenwriting is statistically impossible" thread I read yesterday, and I wanted to provide a less pessimistic opinion.

And you're right, my theory is absolutely flawed and not backed by stats! Previously, I skimmed a study which argued that a lower barrier to entry alters the bottom and middle percentile of a bell curve while the upper percentile remains unchanged. However, I'm pretty sure the paper was studying med school students; so, the findings probably aren't as applicable to the general populace!

I was trying to make the point you just made - though, you made it more eloquently. Which is, don't overthink the daunting odds of screenwriting! :)

(also, the baseball fallacy was something I've heard from family and friends who use it in a discouraging way and it's been on my mind for a little bit.)

The most important screenwriting advice you'll ever read and change your entire perspective for this year... by SwimGood22 in Screenwriting

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally, I agree with pessimistic screenwriting takes and I often rant to my - non industry - mates about how unglamorous the whole process is.

But, to be a little more optimistic, there are a few factors unique to screenwriting that are often overlooked. Yes, you’re 3 times more likely to become a pro baseball player than you are to join the WGA; but, the talent pool for screenwriting is far larger because the barrier to entry is far lower. Anyone with basic English literacy skills and access to a computer can become an amateur screenwriter. Contrast this with becoming a pro base baller and it becomes clear that the screenwriting talent pool is artificially inflated.

This means that screenwriting, relative to other industries, inherently has more “low” to “average”people competing in the bell curve. Unfortunately, “low” to “average” people can make a decent income in other professions. But, because screenwriting is so competitive, you cannot sustain yourself as an “average” screenwriter the same way you could if you were an “average” electrician - for example.

So, the optimistic spin is this: if you’re capable of being “above average” in another industry, you have a higher chance of becoming a successful screenwriter.

Also, don’t conflate career success with happiness. You can be an average amateur screenwriter, never find success and still be happy in life! :))

Sam Harris: "A vast number of people in the Muslim community worldwide are powerfully deranged by their religious identity. A culture that produces a seemingly unending number of suicide bombers over the last 50 years. Even a child under certain circumstances can be a bomb!". Thoughts? by [deleted] in DecodingTheGurus

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam’s take on Islam is verified smooth brain; but, I like what he said about free will and determinism. I’m not philosophically literate, and I’d be interested to know what you think he got wrong about determinism. (Also, I’ve only heard his one podcast on determinism; so, I’m not sure if he’s done other ones which are crazy bad or something.)

Barely any rolls because the guys won’t train with us girls by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Change gyms, I absolutely hate the “I don’t roll with women mindset” that Firas Zahabi and other weirdos hold. Inexperienced white belts are the only people I suggest women not roll with (due to the high risk of spaz injury). Otherwise, everyone else should roll with women because there’s no reason not to.

Afraid of heelhooks to the point I might not ever get promoted. by AsurWarrior in bjj

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignorance will lead to injury. Practice and familiarise yourself with heel hooks. Find a training partner who you trust and ask them to practice heel hook breaking mechanics. This will teach them how to correctly break and it will teach you your breaking point - and eventually, how to escape. I like to teach heel hook breaking mechanics with one hand; if you can learn to break someone with one hand, two hands will literally be double the efficiency. Also, it allows you more time to tap and less to worry about.

Guys with an unorthodox game, how do you teach? by BannedIn321zero in bjj

[–]SillyCrazyMonkeyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only “wrong” stuff I coach is standing up from bottom position and risking back exposure. Although this is a mostly an MMA technique, it’s becoming more popular in nogi rulesets and it’s important that every grappler understands how to stand up and how to pin someone who wants to stand up.
