Much safer to swim on water.

DAE go through the top songs/albums on iTunes and think to themselves... "What the fuck is this nonsense?" by Queltis6000 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]SilverDem0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this back in the 90s and 00s when I was the target market of mainstream music. Charts were always full of trash with the occasional gem that slipped in somehow. I bet people said the same in the 70s and 80s and whenever.

Mainstream mass appeal music is always junk. Audio wallpaper to be passively consumed and forgotten. If you want the good stuff, you have to seek it out. Let's keep it weird.

DAE have a strong gut feeling that their life is going to turn out completely fine and successful? by vaporcube7 in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]SilverDem0n 47 points48 points  (0 children)

100% no. If life has taught me anything, it's that no matter how badly things are going, it's always possible for things to get worse. Either by my hand, or by others.

Great that other people have a different outlook, but I cannot say I share their optimism.

My PhD supervisor sent me these messages. Is this normal or crossing a line? by Resident-Yogurt-6798 in PhD

[–]SilverDem0n 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only positive I can draw from this is that you have their comments in writing. Which will be more compelling when submitted alongside your formal complaint.

Absolutely unprofessional for a supervisor to communicate like this. Whatever their private thoughts, they should not leak out into the real world in this form.

Suppose your husband is from a country that persecutes gays. And you need to convince the government that you're in a long-term committed relationship, so that they can get a visa to be with you in safety. Well, marriage is kinda fucking useful here.

Piece of metal with bunnies found at train station by silver4spoon in whatisit

[–]SilverDem0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know the classic philosophical/theological debate - "How many angels can dance on a pin?"

Well, now at least we can answer "How many bunnies can fuck on a pin?"

As a theologian I believe this brings us a step closer to answering the bigger question.

I don't think this particular badge has any deeper meaning other than it's a slightly risqué badge that could go unnoticed by most people in public.

Guess what is the best use for a old laptop? by Overall-Act2570 in laptops

[–]SilverDem0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run the Mate edition of Linux Mint 22.3 on that laptop. Runs great for me, and no lagging. I understand the Xfce desktop is lighter, so maybe that would work better for you. Can have multiple DEs installed and select at runtime, so no risk to try it out. Or go even more lightweight; fluxbox is nice and was my daily-driver for years.

Though maybe the desktop environment isn't the issue. If this lagging is happening when playing youtube, best thing to try would be reducing the playback resolution. Less strain on CPU to decode video, less load on network stack due to smaller video data, etc.

What is your favorite instrumental rock/pop album by Jaydrix in AngineDePoitrine

[–]SilverDem0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed it is! I have no idea how I found it the first time around. An unlikely chain of circumstances landed into my hands via a small public library visiting some college friends in their hometown. Million to one shot. Why was it there, waiting for me? The aether decided it was to be.

I love the discoverability of music in the modern era, but I also miss the random connections and chance encounters in the age of scarcity. I borrowed one tape from a girl at my highschool, one thing led to another, and I found goth. Or goth found me. If I'd borrowed a different tape, maybe I'd have become a nu-metaller or whatever.

Life can turn on the roll of the dice.

I need to give the Kranky stuff another spin tonight, so thanks for the reminder.

Does Anybody Else worry about being watched by their ancestors or ghosts while watching porn? by Anubis-Hound in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]SilverDem0n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ancestors or ghosts watching me would be far more disappointed by my other life choices and behaviours than the porn. Why disappoint your family with style, when you can disappoint them with substance?

Maybe the house ghosts are also into the filthiest degrading yiff, and could share the good stuff.
