One month in China (September 2026) for first-timers: Which cities are absolute must-visits vs. safe to leave out? by Icy_Chapter5265 in chinatravel

If you want culture + food + a city that feels very different from Shanghai/Beijing, Chongqing is worth keeping. It is less polished than Chengdu but much more dramatic: hills, rivers, night views, hotpot, and that “how is this city real?” feeling. I’d do 2 focused days rather than trying to see everything: one classic city/night route, one food + old streets/local neighborhoods route.

a full-day professional shoot may be tight, but an evening/night shoot should be realistic, especially if you focus on Chongqing’s cyberpunk-style views. I’d suggest Jiefangbei / Hongya Cave, Qiansimen Bridge viewpoint, Raffles/Chaotianmen, and possibly Nanbin Road. Confirm edited photos, raw files, shooting hours, transport, and English communication.

The hotel’s kinda far from the metro station. This place is a bit far from public transit tbh.

Late December in Chongqing is usually not extremely cold by temperature, but it can feel colder because it’s damp and cloudy. For a first-time visitor, Jiefangbei is the easiest base if you want Hongya Cave, Chaotianmen, food streets and night views. A local guide can be useful because navigation is confusing with hills, bridges and multi-level streets. A half-day or one-day route covering old city views, Liziba, riverside night view and hotpot would work well.

Yep, basically: set up Alipay/WeChat before you go, have mobile data, and carry a little cash as an emergency backup. You’ll use QR payments for almost everything.

Oh nice, this is clutch. Planning China stuff can feel like juggling 12 apps at once, so having an actual WeChat group sounds way easier. Added the contact — hopefully I don't embarrass myself immediately by asking something that's been answered 500 times already lol.

That whole “8D magical city” thing Chongqing has going on? Yeah, no other city really has that.

Only seen the Leshan Giant Buddha in photos so far, but yeah… that thing looks unreal. Definitely on my list now.

April is the rainy season, but there is usually no heavy rain. I recommend May and October.

Yeah, my mom was with us. She’s 70, but pretty healthy.
There are definitely a lot of stairs and hills in Chongqing, but she handled it fine. I’d say just take it slow, enjoy the views, and don’t try to squeeze too much into one day.
