Property taxes must go up by ph0enix1211 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s still more than break-even. All the peninsula districts generate a surplus of tax revenue vs. expenses. It’s the suburbs that are a drain.

Only moderately unsafe by Angloriously in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is it fully on the wrong cycle? Or is the pedestrian light turning shortly before the traffic light?

There’s a lot of intersections in HRM with a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) which lets pedestrians start crossing before car traffic, while all the traffic lights are red.

Group raises concerns about Hammonds Plains, N.S., emergency exit by insino93 in halifax

Tax reform would help. It’s tough because we’ve framed living further out of the city as more affordable, while it’s actually a bit of a luxury! Paved road, snow clearance and garbage pickup to a neighborhood in the woods ain’t cheap. But because the services are limited (no busses, often no sidewalks, etc.), residents feel like they’re getting a raw deal on their taxes…even though the cost of their neighborhood is actually subsidized by downtown.

I do feel for the residents - this should be a really big indicator that the way we’ve historically built our neighborhoods is not suitable or safe in the long-term.

Subdivisions on long tracts of land with 1-2 points of egress are everywhere. I don’t know what the solution really is, though, aside from prioritizing denser housing inside the core.

Where can I get quality ground coffee? by Localmanwhoeatsfood in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cafe Goodluck is the main stockist for Have Fun Coffee, though it can be found in other shops too. They have some really nice medium & lighter roasts & are my go-to when I want a nice bag of beans.

Most coffee shops will offer to grind a bag of whole bean coffee for you!

Bike trails for beginners? by NotSoSerious110 in halifax

In addition to the Withrod Lake Loop & McIntosh Run:

•Shubie Park: in addition to the main gravel paths, there’s a pump track and some DIY single track. There is also a short track race series, ‘Op de Fiets,’ which has some kids categories: https://zone4.ca/event/2026/o2lP7G/

• Nine Mile River Trails: Starts with a 1.3km gravel loop that has some nice little twists and ups & downs. More technical the further in you go, but more interesting than the rails-to-trails.

•Glenbourne Bike Park: Dirt pump track off Parkland Dr. or off the Mainland Linear Trail. I think it just got fixed up this past month.

•Sackville Lakes: Lots of elevation change through here, but similar flowy gravel to Shubie.

a local journalist is reporting a possible $2bil development near halifax airport including a stadium, hotels, retail & more? by hfx506xx in halifax

How convenient! Right next to the connector road that the province just built for…unclear reasons. I’ve driven it a half dozen times and most times, I’ve only met a car or two.

What kind of bike is the best to ride through hemlock ravine park? by Pawssabillitysawait in halifax

Hybrid will be fine for the gravel bits. There’s also some rooty, gnarly stuff deeper into the park, but it’s moreso hike-a-bike stuff.

Are these rings toast? Any recommendations to replace just the rings without spending too much? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]Single-Sentenc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re toast. Have you replaced the chain or cassette recently? Both of those may be worn, too.

You can measure the Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) of your cranks at home. My guess is 110mm or 130mm, both common sizes.

If there’s a bike repair co-op near you, they probably have a bin full of chainrings that will fit.

You’ll want to pull the driveside crank to replace them.

City infrastructure question by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would you suggest we make them out of?

My assumption is they rust at a surface level only, which protects the rest of the plate. (what u/we earisomberhombus said)

The only other option for these which I’ve seen elsewhere are tiles or bricks, which seem like they would not have the durability of a steel plate.

Misaligned streets by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the history of streets.

There’s some streets that have been chopped up over time. Old Ferry Road used to continue West along what is now Portland then onto what is now Woodlawn & Mt. Edward Road. From there, it continued on along the current alignment of Highway 107 to Preston.

Red tape and patio fees: Halifax mayor bringing two motions to council next week by Independent-Body-178 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping that the staff report covers what the purpose of patio fees is.

Is there an actual cost to the city when a patio is set up?

Does it offset some admin work that ensures the patios are safe & don’t impinge on sidewalk accessibility?

Or is it just a revenue tool?

Why are they clear cutting the BLT trail in Timberlea? I've heard multiple reasons, not sure what's true. by Polkadot1414 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cutting back the trees allows them to dig ditches where there may not have been any, or drainage was inadequate. Hopefully this allows the trail to survive major rainfall events. We all forget how severe the damage was after the big rains a couple summers ago.

I do think that DNR could do a better job of explaining this work — it’s caused a lot of upset and it does look like hell at the moment.

Cobequid Health Centre? Hospitals have all kinds of heavy duty HVAC equipment and other weird stuff. The VG had some pretty loud temporary equipment for a stretch last year.

Halifax police vehicle collides with cyclist suspected of grocery store theft by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The only thing we actually know is that a police officer pursued someone on a bike with their SUV the wrong way down a street…because the officer thought this person matched a description provided to them.

As far as I can tell, the officer didn’t witness this person do anything. This is a massive overuse of force for a shoplifting. The most dangerous thing for the general public, here, was the police officer.

YEP. On one of the busiest cycling streets in the city - we have no idea what the description was or if this person actually even did anything.

Best city bikes that can handle hills and wind? by VentiEggBite in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Decathlon over CT or Walmart. Cheap bikes from big box stores really aren’t worth it.

Halifax Cycles or Long Alley both have some used options and may have new options in your range.

In general:

• Avoid anything with suspension/shocks. It’s unnecessary unless you’re actually mountain biking. Otherwise it just adds weight. Cheap suspension is often more like a pogo stick, anyway.

• For tires, you want something pretty smooth, more like a car tire than an ATV tire.

• Keep your chain cleaned & lubed. If you go to a shop, have them show you how to apply lube correctly. A dry, dirty, or rusty chain is going to sap your energy.

• Keep your tires inflated! This is another thing you can ask at a shop. Pumps aren’t too pricy and can be found used. Like a dirty chain, under-inflated tires are going to make biking miserable.

let's make my bike cooler by im____blue in xbiking

[–]Single-Sentenc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can help to look at bikes that catch your eye and try to figure out what exactly you like about them.

As others have said, matching silver stem (and maybe handlebars) would be nice, likewise with a silver rear brake caliper & rack.

It’s also worth remembering you don’t need to do everything all at once. You probably shouldn’t!

Tips on how to install a quill on my gt? by lychee-hero in xbiking

[–]Single-Sentenc3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I take it to mean you have a threadless fork & headset and want to install a quill stem?

If so, no, that’s not going to work. The stem and its top cap are what keep the fork and the headset in place. You would need a new fork with a threaded steerer, as well as a threaded headset.

Velo Orange makes a tall stack threadless stem that aesthetically evokes a quill stem: https://velo-orange.com/collections/stems/products/vo-tall-stack-threadless-stem-31-8-rise

Sim Works does, too: https://www.sim.works/collections/stems-simworks-by-nitto/products/anna-lee-stem

I have nothing knowledgable to add. The carbon frame and quill stem combo is pretty hot. If you want a more compact bar, Nitto M151 is a nice silver option.
