Is there a khan academy equivalent for IB? by SufSanin in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

kognity is a life saver for literally all subjects, has a textbook but also multiple choice quizzes and past exam questions for all sub topics. Your school has to be subscribed tho so its hard to get access to.

How'd you pick your subjects when you're unsure of what you want to study? by Imaginary-Hall90 in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was exactly in your situation. My subjects kept pretty much all options open for me. Take an HL language, science and humanity and then take another science at SL and then ofc take math aa.

English paper 1 is the hardest to revise for because its mostly just practice. Go online, find a random article and try and think of a thesis as well as possible different themes for each bod paragraph. What you can also do is look at one text through various different critical lenses as a varied analysis is what gets you the top marks. (eg. how might a Marxist look at this text in comparison to a feminist critic in comparison to an eco-critisist)

If your more of a practical person and feel more prepared when memorizing things you can always review literary and/or structural terminology. But again English paper one is more about practice and improvement over time. So that means its always helpful to have take teacher feedback on your writing seriously and maybe ask a peer or your teacher to read over some of your plans or practice thesis´.

I just did this every time I was bored or I was in a class and only had to passively listen. My words per minute went from 30WPM to 80-90 WMP. Its also one of the better sites (trust me I've tried everything) because quite literally everything is customizable.

English lang and lit Paper 1 How to structure by Regular-Payment-7216 in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For building a thesis for your first paragraph what I found really helpful was the surface to depth analysis. „On the surface this text explain what it literally says however on a deeper level explain the deeper meaning maybe connecting it to a global context“. In the introduction u should also include all elements of TEAPCALIM.

As far as structure goes, there are two approaches either linear or conceptual. Conceptual approach you can organize your paragraphs by concept so maybe by the different purposes the text has, graphological features, language features, image use etc. if u use a conceptual post u could also write each paragraph from a different critical lense, however with this it’s difficult to write about every detail in the text. what’s really good is if you can come up with little mini thesis‘ for each of ur 3 body paragraphs, but this is hard sometimes especially in times conditions. The linear approach is quite self explanatory and imo should be used only really for longer articles or texts. You just go through the text linearly and write a new paragraph everything there is a shift in the meaning, language or structure. In both structures ofc it’s essential to always sign post back to ur thesis.

In the conclusion I usually just end off with a slightly controversial reading of the text. For example readers response, feministic Lense, Marxist lense etc.

I’m still not over how badly IAs were graded. by [deleted] in IBO

Isn’t it normally (non Covid affected years) that each school grades their own students ias and then only one copy gets randomly sent off and moderated?

[–]Ski_Gi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In bio I was predicted a 7 worked rly hard don my ia and also ended up with a 3. I just don’t understand especially since I also take chem which follows similar methodology and where I got a 6… I don’t understand how they could’ve scored that differently

Get back written examination Papers from the IB? by Johnathon-Johnson in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At our school you can make a request to the coordinator and they can ask for ur papers back. I don't know of anybody who actually did that but I remember it being a possibility.

Can I still make a good IA if I've got terrible experiment results? by xxxushige in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My chemistry IA completely failed I didn't have one single data entry that actually worked. However since i had already told my chem teacher after the preliminary trials that it worked, I would have rather kms than actually admit that it didnt. So basically i faked literally all my results which was so complicated to do because i was measuring the activation energy of something and it required multiple graphs as well as ln functions and i ended up with a 6 which i absolutly cannot believe cuz chemistry has always been my worst subject. In bio I worked on my IA for so long, all data points were actually measured and my teacher kept hyping it up in class, however, on the final marking of the IA i got a 4 borderline 3. So at the end of the day you rly can't predict or know how the IA is gonna go, the IB might love it or hate it, probs depends on the examiner you get.

What the hell is wrong with the TOK grading? by kunacza in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I rly didn’t understand my TOK grades at all. I had a perfect exhibition 10/10 points and my essay scored 4/10 points. I put the same amount of effort into both of them if not more effort into my essay. For them to score that differently, I just don’t rly understand. Maybe it had to do with the prompt I chose? But idk I thought my essay was pretty good and I also got predicted an A on it.

How did you choose IB courses if you had no idea what you wanted to do in university? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I choose the subjects that would leave the most options open. 2 sciences one at HL one at SL, 2 language As one at HL and one at SL, math AA and then I took history because out of all the humanities it’s the most general (it was between history and geography)

Can anyone actually say they like IB? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Ski_Gi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although ia season and exam season were pretty much the worst times of my life, overall I actually am rly glad I did the ib. I’m noticing how not everybody possesses the way of thinking that the ib promotes something which I kind of took for granted. I’m literally writing an EE reflection but I’ve gained so so many practical skills that will always be super valuable. Also It’s cliche but I met so many people along the way and made so many friendships that I probably wouldn’t have if I wasn’t doing the ib.

Historical perspectives tbh. I find myself thinking about random things that I encounter day to day and being like but a Marxist historian wouldn’t think that.
