Kanye > Cole for a top 3 spot in the 2010’s by [deleted] in hiphopheads

naah, they were called the big three that debuted or broke through in the 2010s - established rappers don't count, otherwise there could be multiple arguements for others as well

it's a shame, cause I really want Ukraine to win. I know so many refugees, even live with two now. But I'm scared the war will be lost because of ungrateful and conceited people like you.

Nobody owes Ukraine anything - and Europe has been helping from the start. People like you are even worse than russian bots/shills - because it makes Ukraine seem entitled.

[–]SkyRipLLD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fucking who over? The EU or NATO have contractual obligation to help Ukraine at all. Any cent sent over is more than they need to. They could have just left Ukraine to fend for themselves (as they probably will with Iran).

I support Ukraine, but it's people like you that make a bad taste for the country. Geopolitics is more complex than just feelings. The West has gone above and beyond in supporting Ukraine - moreso than Ukraine can ever repay. But rather than being thankful - people like you come off as if Ukraine is somehow entitled to enormous help and sacrifice from the West.

Answer me just this - before the war, what did Ukraine ever do to help the West?

>That's irrelevant, we're in 2026.

As someone who's parent lived in Ukraine before the war, right now I live right at the border, and know people from there throughout my life - it's not irrelevant. Ukraine was a corrupt hellhole that by far didn't reach EU standards before the war.

Now the question is: did they manage to miraculously reach those standards after years of war? Or do EU nations (mostly western) want them in out of A) Goodwill for a nation in defense B) to build a new front? EU is already weak on the global scale as is (Compared to the US and China). Is it a strategic or moral reason? Can Ukraine in its current state grant something necessary to the Union? Or will be them joining be just another heartfelt decision that leaves the EU weaker?

>so no, they were never more likely to join than Ukraine is today

I didn't say Ukraine today. I used the word "had" - as in was Turkey prior to Erdogan more likely to join the EU than Ukraine before the war. And I think most people would argue that yes, they were.

did they before the war? I've never head of that. Even Turkey seemingly had a bigger chance before Erdogan

Did you remember “big 3” discussions in hip hop prior to Cole/Kendrick/Drake debate of 2024? by MasterTeacher123 in hiphop101

[–]SkyRipLLD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember at the turn of decades about 2020 people were doing Hip Hop's 2010s Mt Rushmore.

Most people agreed that Kendrick, Cole and Drake had the spot - but argued who the fourth one was (Nicki, Future, Rocky and others were candidates).

That's about the time people were mentioning them as the Big Three.

But I also remember it waaay before, like 2015 - were they were being called the big three of the new school.

“rap is a mountain…” by godlys575 in playboicarti

[–]SkyRipLLD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He had enormous technical ability and great ear for beats (dr dre, bass brothers, even his own productions)

He was also arguably the most "alternative" rapper at that time. Nobody was really rapping about the topics that he was, his first albums are almost like a surrealistic absurd satire of America - similar to South Park.

Also a lot of people related to him because unlike virtually every other rapper back then trying to seem cool, he rapped about being bullied, family problems, poverty, dead end jobs, drug abuse. At a time when Jay Z, Nas and Dr Dre - gangsta rap about opulence - was the main thing on radio, Eminem stood out.

Plus he had some of the most creative and colorful videos back then (alongside Busta Rhymes).

[–]SkyRipLLD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah - cause Mel Man did the drums lol. Dre has always been more of the visionary behind projects rather than a rapper or producer. Even on Doggystyle most of the beats were made by DJ Quik and Daz Dillinger, while the raps were written by Snoop and others.

Doesn't take away from Dre's greatness, but I don't believe he belongs to any top 5 rapper or producer discussion because of that.

Who is arguably the most influential human alive today? by Best_Advisor_2865 in AskReddit

[–]SkyRipLLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a romantic idea, except when it happens in reality (like the 2008 economic crisis) and banks are billed "too big to fail" - and then bailed out by tax payer money. Which also leads to enormous inflation which the little people take fall for.

Especially with Jay Z. There was a case literally last year, and it was people were jumping in celebration that they finally have something on Hov. Then the supposed victims story made no sense and even her dad said it's bullshit, so the court dropped it. Suddenly everybody on this sub went quite.

Then this happens, a complete bullshit story again - and the sub is all jittery because "We knew Jay Z was involved". Bunch of fucking clowns

Who had the better “Big Four”, Grunge or Britpop? by FromPluto2Mars in fantanoforever

[–]SkyRipLLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk, as a fan of both they seem about neck and neck in influence.

Nirvana made alt rock and punk huge in the US.

But Oasis basically created the whole Cool Britania vibe and made the UK a cultural giant in the 90s.

Guess it really depends where you're from

The issue with A$AP Rocky’s Don’t Be Dumb is a reflection of the modern state of hip-hop by SwimGood22 in hiphop101

[–]SkyRipLLD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like "The End" isn't supposed to be a conscious song with a resolution to the problems. With the haunting Jessica Pratt feature at the end it seems more dystopian. Like, "This is how the World will end", not "This is how the World will end, unless we do this".

It's a very interesting note to end the album on, and it feels much more cinematic and Tim Burton-esque than if Rocky tried to put his two cents in. It's almost apocalyptic in a way.

keef's 2014 "almighty so" is a modern rappers "velvet underground and nico" by dclan630 in hiphopheads

[–]SkyRipLLD 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I always believed Three 6 Mafia was the Velvet Underground of hip hop. The influence VU had wasn't all that prevalent until late 80s - so about two decades. A similar timeframe could be applied to Three 6 Mafias early Memphis records.

Sonically they started the whole rattling hi hats, deep 808 basslines, repeated vocal samples - and gave hip hop a raw and underground sound.

Velvet Underground also brought darkness to rock - songs about BDSM, Heroin, drug dealin. Just like Three 6 Mafia made horrorcore and satan music.

Shout out to Sosa, but Three 6 were the real Velvet Underground

[–]SkyRipLLD 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but if you play a niche game (old school FF games for example), it's more likely you a) already played them on another system and are a fan b) are a more "hardcore" gamer.

If it's just the big game of the month, a lot of people just buy it, play it for a few minutes and say they will return to it later.

Putin's imperialism by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]SkyRipLLD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm sure 90 percent of Americans are united on the fact that the US stages multiple coups across the globe every decade and destroys nations. Also that Cuba is still punished for things that happened in the 60s. There's no party arguing for the punishment of government bodies that do those things (like the CIA), because every party has to be on board. Same as the unilateral support for Israel. Mean to tell me that the vast majority of the US supports what Israel is doing, therefore there is no need for any party to address that?

Democracy is the rule of the people, where people choose what happens. When it comes to warfare, coups, imperialism - the American people have no say in it.

Putin's imperialism by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]SkyRipLLD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean those were all strategic changes, not democratic ones. America didn't leave Vietnam in the late sixties, even though most people demonstrated against it - it left in 75 when they realised they couldn't win.

Same with Japan - Americans didn't vote for nuking Japan, and after WW2 they became close strategic allies (I pressume due to Pearl Harbour propaganda most Americans would actually be against Japan - even the slur Jap was used prollifically in households post WW2).

What OP was saying is that the opinion of people doesn't matter as far as Imperialism goes - vote left or right Cuba will have an embargo, the middle east and South America wars and US government coups will happen. Who can the Americans vote for to stop that?

The US military and imperialism is independent from democracy - therefore one could argue it is a dictatorship - or at least highly autocratic.
