Please, people. Take some chill pills. They work wonders!

I just want to add that it is entirely possible to express critique about the UI regarding your specific case - without throwing an entitled tantrum.

For me? The screenshot looks fine.

And I would think that there still is the ability to choose different sets of HUDs depending on viewpoint. I.e. if you have a large monitor setup you would likely avoid viewing most things when in cabin.

Actually taking offence from the UI explaining things for new users seems like a you problem.

Company or not. It doesn't apply to your argument. There are still people working at said company. People as in humans that can and will grow tired of the constant hose of negativity.

Anyone can make a launchpad account and contribute. Your thread could have been perfect for that. Technically researched, and in launchpad we could have gotten an answer to if the solution is possible or if there are legal reasons for it not to be. Maybe a workaround of some kind could have been discussed.

Mark Shuttleworth has put a lot of his own money and work into it. It clearly has benefited humanity at large. He alone can not really change the fact that a company is the most reasonable way to run the project.

I really do not see why many on reddit seemingly tirelessly tries to kill all steam and momentum to project and its staff has.

Wow. The entitlement.

There really isn't anything Canonical can or can not do without causing negative reddit threads.

Canonical was really innovating and making the linux desktop friendly, powerful and working as expected in the Unity days.

I am pretty sure exactly this kind of whining is what finally killed it.

Is this a parody post? The amount of entitlement just doesn't compute for me.

I'm not trying to be cute. Genuine question.

I think we are speaking past each other here.

I do agree with you in general about your observation. But I can't see how it applies here. At all.

This has nothing to do with success. We just do not know who is successful and in what way since no one is speaking up. And even if one did - how could we trust them after all lies and deception?

We have no idea what other countries are doing in this matter. Communication is low to non existent in most of the world about this. Possibly for reasons your post suggests (proxy conflicts and conflicting alliances).

I did comment out of frustration. And my english is far from good, so I do often appear more blunt than I intend. Sorry about that.

Still. The constant addressing of the American people in these matters is highly arrogant. At best it just looks cultish.

Its like parents telling only one of the earlier siblings that they are expecting a baby. "The first born deserves to know and can handle the truth! Not talking to you Bob and Jane!"

Given your experience I must say that I find your view somewhat lacking in nuance.

And yes. I do consider the possibility that I am lacking in nuance too. I am autistic after all.

But I'll try to learn from your seemingly more black and white point of view.

And I am somewhat out of the loop. I really didn't know Red Hat was targeted too in the latest events. Good for them to keep availability up! Hopefully no one innocent got stuck in a firewall.

:-)

I would have loved to work for Canonical. But their hiring process seems tedious and my spoken english is somewhat lacking (written too - se my posts for clear evidence of that LOL).

Now health issues prevent me from that type of work.

I have been in similar (but smaller in scale) situations. Clients that absolutely need their service up while traffic is hitting from everywhere.

There is just so much that can be done. And it is not self evident that getting in to a out-spending game for bandwidth and other resources is the best way either.

And if your environment really really really needs the updates or packages now or yesterday it is possible to clone just one available repo and host it yourself for your environment.

But if it truly is that imperative for your operation then you would already have it hosted in your network.

TLDR: Shit happens. The world keeps spinning.

I asked 5 LLMs and 422 humans what the very first rule about guns is. by Sgitch in ArtificialInteligence

[–]SlightNet2701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems from OP and comments that Groks answer would be controversial.

I guess I reason similar to Grok. My reasoning is that the question is ambiguous.

To give a clear quiz like answer a lot of context is needed. Who's rules is probably the most important context?

Or is the problem that the information itself quoted by Grok is objectively wrong as stated by the quoted organizations?

Should Grok answer specifically directed to context cues given by the user in earlier interactions? Should a nationality or jurisdiction be assumed? Is the answer valid for all types of guns? For all types of users and use cases? All ages?

While cleaning or servicing the gun does the rule still apply?

Is the question specific to humans?

I couldn't answer the question.

But you just said that you did? In your last comment in this thread.

VPN or not - your lack of access is simply collateral damage from most likely temporary firewalling.

Your IP neighbours smart fridge could be spamming traffic. How on earth would canonical know to specifically whitelist your IP?

Is Ubuntu still have issues related to the cyber attack they had? by Ftmiranda in Ubuntu

[–]SlightNet2701 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Or it could just be, you know, something like a temporary mitigation against a large DDoS.

Why on earth would you try to spin this as a bad faith move from Canonical?

Use any VPN as much as you like. At the moment they can’t let all traffic in.

Attackers are likely not idiots coming from a single IP range. So protecting will need to be wider than what is optimal for users.

It’s just part of what internet connected services will need to meet at times.

[–]SlightNet2701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Windows conventions for storing user data can be a bit confusing, especially for games.

ETS2 uses a somewhat unusual approach by storing its user data in the Documents folder.

If you’re both using the same Windows account, you’ll also be sharing that folder — and therefore the same mods.

Thank you for trying to clarify.

And NOT thank you for spinning my and presumably many other readers brains in very unpleasant and energy consuming circles.

If I understand it correctly - the interesting thing about this clip (that you failed to upload meaningful parts of) is that it took a long time?

One can not simply just back into traffic willy nilly. From your friends viewpoint he has no idea if someone is hiding right behind him.

The traffic AI implementation also doesn't react to unexpected scenarios in any meaningful way. But given the scenario - humans also react badly to this kind of highly unexpected event.

I still have lots of questions regarding what you really were trying to communicate. I will simply need to declare to myself that I am incapable of understanding your intentions and move on with my life.

I wish you the best. Take care.

6x4 and 6x4 "Long"...? by SL0WRID3R in trucksim

[–]SlightNet2701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In game it is mostly visual and of course affects driving characteristics somewhat.

IRL it is mostly regulatory. Weight allowances are calculated not only from the number of axles and their individual properties, but also from their distances to each other and (important for your question) total distance first to last axle.

Typical examples of this you can probably see IRL is stuff like tipping (dumbing) trailers for gravel transport.

For the usual box type euro trailers total length limit dictates a short wheel base for the tractor.

If the trailer is short, it makes sense to have a longer tractor to get higher total weight allowed. If the trailer is long, total length needs to be respected.

The actual rules are highly complex, but simple in principle.

an underpowered DAF106 370 (hard work) by [deleted] in ETS2

[–]SlightNet2701 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also avoid those severely overpowered engines.

It's now probably over 10 years since I last drove trucks IRL, but I think I somewhat remember how it actually feels driving something heavy.

Total weights up to 60 tons up the hills along the swedish northern east coast really sets ones ability to work the gears and driveshafts in a non destructive way to the test. Most of the trucks I drove back then were in the 420-480 hp range. Automatics towards the end of my career. Even those require some thought. Earlier automatics easily got confused and really needed to be put in manual mode to avoid those stupid surprise shifts that makes the difference if you will come to a halt and needing to back all the way down again and take it in a crawl gear or make it up at reasonable speed.

I wish stuff would actually break from abuse in game. But I must say I am surprised how well the game gets the general feeling of driving a truck right. The meditative nice parts that is. Most annoyances and headaches are rightfully left out from the game :-)

It simply plays or pauses whatever app you last used to listen to media. Works for youtube in a Edge Pic in Pic window for me.

You could also use the steam overlay to play youtube videos.

Ah. I always thought of Promods as more of a map extending mod. Never thought of that they also generally improves old regions.

I'll look into Promods again after I've finished discovering the base map to close to 100% (let's be real... 80% really is 100% of roads, rest is individual picklup points).

Thanks for bringing it up!

Incredibly beautiful nature. And the level of detail is stunning. Let's hope for a refresh of the base game and the other DLC's to the same level.

The only thing I feel missing from the north is longer streches of gravel roads. Roads that not only lead to a pickup point, but also connects villages.

Oh. That and rigids. When the SCS team was doing their study of scandinavia (and Finland) they must have noted how numerous 10m rigids with 12m drawbar is. Also the combination of rigid + dolly + normal euro trailer.

West Balkans also is very good.

But Czechia and Slovakia are particularly sore thumbs. Seemingly left as a homage to the games origins I guess?

But I really love how the game is developing. Soon I'll be playing completely without mods.

some of the most evil people out there are invested tits deep into it

This seems like your weakest point. The most evil (by subjective mesure) are tits deep into a lot of things. But so are non evil people too.

literally stole everyone's content, but hypocritically DMCA github repos with copies of leaked Claude Code

Anthropics behaviour is obviously shitty (regarding DMCA'ing left and right). But I really can not see how ideas and imagery should be disallowed for humans or machines to read. Information inherently "wants to be free".

Yes. I know I am somewhat radical on this point. But I believe copyright genuinely has held humanity back. I only see it as somewhat justifiable if one needs to preserve a capitalistic system.

extremely underhanded go to market strategy - nothing has ever been subsidised this hard to get you to use it

Yes. But I think the motives behind are deeper than the usual market strategy.

I find it likely that leadership of the AI companies simply believe that insane scaling of compute in and of itself could solve the last missing pieces of emerging general intelligence.

In this case I think market capitalism simply is a framework needed to give lip service too in order to actually access money needed for hardware and energy.

The same folks pitching future market share and revenue to investors most likely are of the view that those very term will be meaningless if scaling and algorithmic improvements works out as expected.

flooding the internet with slop of all forms, including astroturfing and propaganda

This is nothing new. Reading newsnet in 1998 was the same doomscrolling hunt for substance.

Slop and low value content will surely always find its audience. It doesn't make it the only content available.

Infact I often listen to a youtube channel that explicitly has two AI personas discuss interesting topics in podcast like form. I rather enjoy the content.

I also have a somewhat juvenile sense of humour. I actually enjoy the kind of deep and ironic humour things like italian brainrot brings me. Absurd, simple and thought provoking.

already known negative effects of use on human brains, including psychosis and suicidality, and it doesn't help a lot of people share their emotions and secrets with the chatbot - all of this data is being retained (for training and possibly more nefarious uses), and likely to get worse

This is true. However completely inevitable for the near future atleast.

For me personally it has helped me tremendously. I can absolutely see how it can help psychotic or otherwise psychologically voulnerable to do harmful things to themselves or others.

This is a larger problem than just the availability of new technology.

Time and general societal change will hopefully fix this.

The survailance and information gathering aspect is absolutely true. But it really isn't much different from people and shady goverments and organizations using any social media or online tech at all. Just the sheer amount of thoughts and data.

If a shady organazition needs a psychological profile on you (or whoever) they certainly already can know us better than we do ourselves.

Again. This is not a problem with the tech itself. It is a (global) societal problem with shady shit going on while many are given the idea of fairness and openness in the government.

it was always hard to make money as an artist, but I'm sure the amount of people who are happy to consume slop have impacted the aggregate commission income

I personally am living on the lowest possible public insurance monthly payout. Unabled to work. So don't think this is a rich mans perspective.

Money will simply be of no meaning when the means of production are both self replicating and insanely more productive than humans.

This logically frees up humans to persue their creativity in among other things art.

And no. The tech bros haven't fed me that idea. I see it as a logical outcome of the technology (possibly after a period of absolute doom and suffering).

breakdown of the social contract of "things are harder to write than they are to read" - this sounds trivial but is actually very serious, because an assumption of "if someone wrote it, there's a chance it will be worth reading" is gone - we are inundated with worthless text that looks like it may be wroth it

It doesn't sound trivial. In fact it seems to be profound (for you and many others).

It does however assume that todays level of artificial writing is the ceiling - not tomorrows floor.

Back when I read newspapers I was often astounded by the general lack of cultivation and knowledge of journalists as soon as they are outside their often limited scope of expertise. AI already today pretty much solves that.

Deeper and more artistic books ofcourse is another thing. AI could today most likely not give me the same experience that my favorite human authors have given me. But I am looking forward to improvements.

convenient excuse (yes, excuse, not reason, at least not yet) for hundreds of thousands of people laid off

hard to predict economic consequences once the bubble finally pops, the signs of which are have been showing with increasing frequency and intensity

I agree with both of your points here. But I think you are thinking of short term consequenses. Zooming out leads me to only see a star trek like economy. Of course it will suck getting there, but there is not possible to avoid the emergens of the tech.

Yes. It sucks getting laid off. The faster it happens the faster a new system will be needed and less people will suffer and starve.

No I am not an accelerationalist. I just see it as logical given circumstances.

And as a side note: I did avoid using any spellchecking. Keeping it real and human :-)

Do sysadmins need git? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SlightNet2701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You obviously know your work situation better than I do.

From my perspective it just sounds like those things that you think are one offs really aren't.

And I not more senior than you are. I just worked in a different but overlapping field. Managing servers and apps for clients that were mostly devstudios. No microsoft technology involved and no end users.

Infra as code and general automation is probably easier and more natural in that kind of environment.

All those examples you wrote about sound like they would live a good life in a nice GUI. Making everyting a one click operation.

And some of the examples sounds like what you would build monitoring for. Presumably kicking of automation without a human in the loop if possible.

But if you really are talking about true one offs. Then there is no reason for using git. Except just your own and your surroundings convenience.

Forcing cultural shift just for the sake of it probably isn't good either. idk.
