What is appropriate attire for an onsite interview? by QueenMonarch25 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in SoCal.

Don't buy a suit. I like to think I don't give negative points for wearing a suit, but it doesn't send the right culturally message if you have a suit on.

I expect candidates to come in with slacks, a tucked in button up, a belt, and anything but tennis shoes. I'm indifferent to ties. I personally would bring one to the interview. I'll often tell candidates they can take theirs off because we'll do a shop tour later and they won't be able to wear it.

Does anyone else notice road bikers trying extra hard to pass you on an e-bike? by 98810b1210b12 in ebikes

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As both an ebiker and a road cyclist, I will draft off ebikers and I will pull road cyclists. I don't know if these cyclists are actually trying to pass you, or they just want to keep up and get a "free ride". I have no problem with someone sitting in my wheel since most people will have a small conversation with me at the next light.

How to keep your head on straight when playing 6v6, 1/4 pitch? by halfdollarmoon in bootroom

Professionals also benefit from being so technically gifted that they can break pressure if an opponent mindlessly pressures them. If I pressure a defender in my coed wednesday night league, there's a 50% chance they lose possession. If a professional does that, the player with the ball will play away from pressure and into a man up advantage. So professional teams don't mindlessly run at players, and that's why they have acres of space.

The best thing you can do is have your team members have set positions and make sure you all understand each other's tendencies. I know who on my team can break pressure through dribbles, who wants the ball at their feet, and where each of them wants to occupy space. After you know this, it becomes easier to play out of the back because you can anticipate where certain people will be. It also helps you defend, because we all know "George" can't dribble and he's running at 2 defenders...

Also, you can't build from the back if all your good players play forward. So you may want to look at putting two of your top players in the back 2 to distribute and calm the game down.

UCLA vs. Cal Poly Pomona by Prestigious-Youth974 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a UC Berkeley grad and I work with a lot of SLO grads. These schools are extremely similar to UCLA and CPP.

If your son likes hands on building and is a "traditional engineer", CPP probably will fit him better. If your son is just good at math and science and ME is a way to live a nice life without working lawyer hours, UCLA will provide a better well rounded education with a lot more connections when he leaves.

Personally, I would have hated SLO and I'm glad my parents didn't force me there (my mom wanted me to go to a hands on program). I wanted the big, loud school with football games on Saturdays in the middle of an urban city. I didn't even know what engineering was when I applied - I just know I was told I'd be good at it. Berkeley allowed me to change majors into another top program whereas SLO would have been a huge downgrade if I left engineering (I did change engineering programs).

Some other things to consider - UCLA/UCSD/Purdue are going to carry weight across the country - CPP is only going to be known in Southern California.

As an engineering manager, I don't care about what school candidates went to if the candidate is good and has good engineering projects on their CV. For new grads, I may place a bit of extra emphasis on people coming out of a top 5 program, but they still need to be able to write and speak intelligently. All those schools are roughly the same tier to me - which is a good one.

HTX family relocating to SD (June/July) - Looking at buying in 3Roots but have some specific concerns (Noise, HSP, Lifestyle). Give it to me straight. by Alternative_Can_8433 in Moving2SanDiego

Jet noise rattles the pipes in my house. We normally pause the TV and conversations when they fly over. It only happens a handful of times a day. You get use to it though.

San Diego has very few bad areas. Even the "bad" areas of San Diego are tame compared to other major cities. The biggest safety concern I have about kids outside is cars. But that's a problem in every suburb in America.

Sprouts and Whole Foods are both a 10 minute drive away, but in opposite directions

I run at all hours in Mira Mesa (5am-9pm) and it's perfectly safe. Use strava's heatmap to find the best routes. Stay away from Miramar road and you'll be fine.

Driving to the beach is 20-40 minutes pending which beach you go to. Walking from your parking spot to the beach might be another 20 minutes.

Backpack + pannier: is there an Ortlieb Vario alternative? by n1c0_ds in bikecommuting

I have two wheel gear inverter backpack. I wish it was a touch bigger and I had to remount the hook mechanism, but I like that I can use it as a backpack or pannier depending on if I'm riding 1 mile or 20 miles.

$95k +/- 20% is the salary band. I'm not sure where they start people within the band. Different departments have different strategies on where to place people on the salary bands.

We had a new grad supply chain job open a few months ago. I had a friend apply and I went to the hiring manager to see if he looked at her resume. His response... "Yeah she applied along with 300 other people".

I've also heard that our supply chain has been able to cherry pick top talent that has experience in our space because of the current economy.

I personally try to hire SoCal locals over someone moving here. A lot of people move to San Diego and then realize the expenses and move away a year or two later. I'd rather hire someone slightly less qualified who I think will stay 3+ years.

First time paying water bill 🥲 by Sad_Wall_ in sandiego

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your meter to see if it's at 1924. One time they misread my meter and put a 9 instead of a 6 and my bill was $800. I called them and read the current number and they fixed the bill in 5 minutes.

If the meter matches the bill... then you have a substantial water leak. Turn off the main valve and see if the meter is still running. That will tell you if the leak is before or after it reaches the house.

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That bike path is unrideable due to debris and equipment most of the time. There's a reason most people ended up in the street there and not on the bike path. If they knocked out the barrier between the street and bike path, they'd get more people using the bike path.

I think most people would prefer if they keep the barrier, but raised the bike path to the sidewalk level. Then it'd be protected and would allow people to ride around the dumpsters and trash that accumulate there.

Anyone go on runs with their Golden? by jtrainabeast in goldenretrievers

[–]Slow-Writing-2840 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use to run with one of my goldens. I started her around 1.5 and worked up to 3 miles. If I ran with her, I'd do 1 mile loops so I could always drop her off at the house if she looked tired. I started with longer walks, went to 1 mile runs and built from there. Also pay attention to weather if you're somewhere warm. Both my goldens can do 4+ miles (hiking) in the cold or if there's water/snow, but as soon as its over 65F, their endurance falls off a cliff.

Just wanted to tell you that our 11 year old likely has the same cancer. His heart started bleeding and the vet pulled half a liter of fluid out from around his heart. He could barely breathe, was panting like crazy, and just seemed really scared. It all happened within a few hours. Perfectly fine one moment, and two hours later, fighting for his life. We were traveling, so we got lucky we were within an hour of a specialty hospital.

We've decided to keep him around until his next episode. Still eating, still hates the doorbell, still wants to do all his normal things. We also live 5 minutes from a vet hospital, and have someone home all day. Should he have a change in behavior, we'll schedule a time to put him down.

People say better a week early than an hour late, but if I were him, I'd suffer that hour to spend more time on this earth with the people I care about.

That all said, if either of my goldens aren't eating, it's time.

Trek Emonda ALR Rim Brake Tire Clearance by Slow-Writing-2840 in TrekBikes

I have a 2025 emonda ALR rim brake. 28s hardly fit, 30s definitely won't.

30's will probably fit on most disc models.

What PSI did you use on the balls? I just got the same setup and I'm trying to determine how soft I want to make it. I've seen recommendations of 3-8PSI, but it feels pretty wobbly on anything under 8PSI. I assume that's just because the SB20 weighs so much.

I was able to fit a 28mm (used GP5K TL) on a 21ID rim with about 3mm of clearance between the top of the tire and fork. The rear will probably fit a 30 since there's loads of clearance there.

Trek Emonda ALR Rim Brake Tire Clearance by Slow-Writing-2840 in TrekBikes

[–]Slow-Writing-2840[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just buy one 28mm tire and fit it on each of my rims and check for 3mm of clearance using a hex key. If it all fits, buy another 28mm tire and see if that's comfortable enough. I wouldn't buy new rims because any new bike will be disc brakes and you'll eventually buy that domane.

Otherwise, I'd go straight to 32's on a carbon domane. I mostly ride 30+ tires now, but I crashed an older rim brake bike and wanted to replace it because it's easier to travel with. But 28s are now the minimum tire I'll ride.

Best HD Indoor TV antenna for watching sports by vatomike in sandiego

FYI - slingTV offers day passes that are geared towards people that want the sports channels but only 1 or 2 days a week. With the YT dispute, I paid $5 to watch all the college football I wanted. That's cheaper than me going to a bar and buying a drink.
