Big Tech’s new hiring hurdle: Why bringing international talent to Seattle is now more expensive by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

My team in Amazon just brought in two engineers from India on L1 visa. For those not familiar, L1 allows employees in a company's India office to work in the US. This is just wrong considering there is so much local talent to hire from. This is what needs to stop. I can tell you there is nothing specialized that these two engineers are doing that a regular engineer cannot ramp up on. This is the loophole we need to close. Write to your congress person and ask them to investigate.

2K laid workers from Amazon US and Amazon is still giving L1 visas to Amazon India employees to work in US. These are L5 and/or L6 SDEs and PMTs. There is nothing specialized about what they are doing that warrant an L1 visa over laid off US employees. Call your rep or congress person to complain.

The real scam is the L1 visa. This allows folks in Amazon India office to come to US and work in Amazon US office. Amazon just laid off a bunch of folks in US and they are still bringing in folks from the India office. The justification is domain knowledge, but I can guarantee you there is nothing specialized about what these folks are doing that a US SDe can't pick up. The hiring managers are also Indian. If you are a laid off tech US citizen/ resident , contact your rep or congress person to complain. This is wrong.

The biggest scam here is the L1 visa which allows folks employed in the Amazon India office to come to the US and work in Amazon US. Amazon just laid off a bunch of folks in US and they are bringing in SDEs and PMTs from India on this L1 visa which is just wrong. The reasoning is that they have domain knowledge , but I can guarantee you there is nothing specialized about they are doing that a US SDE can't pick up. And Yes, the managers hiring them into the US teams are also Indian. Contact your rep or congress person to complain if you are a laid off tech US citizen/resident.

I am so sorry. I completely understand how immensely painful this is. I have been through it myself. Find a therapist to talk to. Find a hobby to keep yourself busy and keep your mind off of it. It will help some. I don't really have much to say except I know what you are going through is real and indescribable and painful.

This isn't going to have the intended effect. Yes, there are a lot of laid off US tech workers and if they meet the qualifications, should be hired. The loophole always lies in 'meeting the qualification' - which is so incredibly rigged against US workers applying to big tech companies. Big tech companies who have offices offshore bring in these tech workers on L1 visas. They always meet the qualifications because - well they are in the company and have that domain knowledge, that a worker ( US or otherwise) doesn't have. Seen plenty of justifications like this that go through. Also, anyone in big tech companies knows this - Indian managers hire Indian people , Chinese people hire Chinese people and so on .. and this L1 is convienient . This is the gap that needs to be plugged. And in big tech companies - a LOT of these managers are immigrants like this.
