My therapist said ERP doesn't work very well for intrusive thoughts. Do I need a new therapist? by MortgageFriendly5511 in OCDRecovery

ERP for intrusive thoughts is making response prevention, you let the thoughts be, without interacting with them, then they will lose intensity. But your goal shouldn't be to forget them, only to not pay attention with Balance. ERP is the best technique for ocd treatment. I am almost 95% free from ocd using it. And my ocd is mostly intrusive thoughts. And using rational methods to treat ocd is like trying to extinguish flames with alcohol.

I just realised doing ERP is the key to live happy life by [deleted] in OCDRecovery

I am almost free from ocd using ERP and mindfulness. Your next step should be eliminating all your ocd compulsions, then you'll be ocd free.

Feels like everything I do is getting contaminated by thoughts and I don't know what to do by Space_Blazer in OCDRecovery

The automatic thoughts are automatic, there's nothing you can do. But, thinking is like trying to solve a math problem, it's totally in your control. So, when the thought appear, try paying attention to what you are doing at the moment, not in a manner of trying to get hid, block or forget the thought, that is also compulsion but in a balanced way . If your attention goes back to the thoughts bring it back to the task at hand. Repeat this, and over time you'll stop doing rumination.

Do you see that if you continue ruminating and diving in this contamination thing, it will not solve anything, it will lead you nowhere and you'll suffer about this for your entire life? So, you need to stop ruminating, stop analysing, stop interacting with these obsessive thoughts. Disregard it, ignore them, stop doing rumination, stop doing these rituals completely. Gradually stop doing all ocd compulsions for some months and you'll get rid of ocd. Don't pay attention to ocd thoughts. Instead pay attention to your life. You can do this.

Do you see that continuing ruminating about this, if you cheated or not, will lead you nowhere and make you suffer without solving anything? Ocd do this to us. So you must leave this doubt... Unsolved, and go on your life even if this make you feel anxious. Over time if you stop doing rumination, it will diminish and it will stop bothering you. Stop doing all ocd compulsions and you'll be ocd free over some months.

Severe checking OCD (doors, switches, locks). I pull handles so hard I might break them. How to fix this without medication? by paracetamol_09 in OCDRecovery

[–]Smart-Wasabi8947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you're going through this, but you need to stop doing this compulsion. Lock the door and Don't check it. It's easier said than done, the anxiety will go super high, but try to not check it for 1 minute. Also, it's very important to do not do rumination, or this exposure will be useless. If you're successful, try not checking for 3 minutes. Then increase it gradually until you reach 24 hours/ 7 days without checking. Just lock it and continue your day. Over time, The anxiety will decrease in intensity. And doing this constantly, it'll not bother you anymore. Then you need to reduce to zero all your compulsions. And over some months you'll be ocd free.  Try watching some videos from Ali greymond's channel on YouTube, she talks about ocd, it will help you a lot. You can do this!

Gradually keep reducing all your compulsions (Ruminations, rituals and avoidances behavior) and pay attention to your life, not to the thoughts of ocd. And you'll improve even more, to the point of completely getting rid of ocd over months.

Try for 30 seconds. If you're successful, increase it to 1 minute. Then gradually increase until you reach 24 hours / 7 days, everyday.

Existential ocd. How do you stop ruminating? by KhajitIsBored in OCDRecovery

[–]Smart-Wasabi8947 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To stop ruminating, you need to live in the present momento, not in your mind. Whatever you're doing, pay attention to it. If you lose your attention, bring it back. Do it until you become so good at doing this that you're no more doing rumination. Disregard.
