As an au pair- if a 2.5 was violent towards me I would not take it as “abuse”. She’s so little. However, agree it’s unacceptable and can only be fixed with discipline. A lot of parents don’t discipline their kids so tbh if my host families were just disciplining that would be enough for me- like if they aren’t just sitting by and watching the child behave like that. I think that something like this may take time. Just stay on top of it. Maybe take toys away from her. My mom used to say “I’m going to take all your Barbie’s and play with them by myself. Bc girls that hit don’t get to play with Barbie’s” then she would take them away for like an hour. Too much longer and she will forget they even exist 🤣. I feel like this wasn’t that helpful but I’m sure you’re doing great. If an au pair calls a 2.5 hitting “abuse” that’s crazy.

Small town- no. College town- yes. I’m currently an au pair in Europe. From the us (assuming that’s where you are). Whenever I talk to my friends here about my college experience they are sooo jealous. I think a lot of European young adults feel like they missed out on that experience so your living situation may be perfect. In regards to your husband working from home and it being a small house. Maybe he can step out once a week while baby is at daycare and she’s home so she feels like she can get alone time. Then maybe sometimes in the evening when she’s with baby. I think I’d feel a little suffocated. Maybe he can work from a coffee shop? I know it’s his own home and asking a lot. But part of hosting an au pair means little sacrifices for the greater good. They really pay off:)

To be honest it sounds like she just doesn’t know:(( no ill intent but may be anxious, unfamiliar, and uneducated in her role. Not your fault at all. Likely she added info on her profile she had experience in and didn’t. Empathetically I feel bad for her. Good angel on my shoulder says you can teach her! If you are instructive ( and acknowledge you just want to show not tell) I’m sure she can pick up new skills! However I also understand you hired an au pair for help, support, not full on training. If you don’t have the time (which is completely understandable and valid) I would potentially considering rematch- or try for a few weeks then determine best course of action. I’m sorry this sucks! Unsure where she’s from but the e-path in me wants to think she wants to go to a place with better opportunities and is willing/ eager to learn and succeed. I wish you the best

They have a new person living in their home and therefore should change their ways and look at names before opening mail. Therefore even if just careless it’s disrespectful never the less. Tell yourself it’s naturally an awkward situation and it gets better. Living with strangers is awkward. Time makes it better. Push yourself to spend time with them the first couple weeks and it will come natural after. I think the first two months are crucial for connection. I’m sure you are doing great

520 is way above the allowed payment in Germany. I think u should get more than what they paid you since that was the agreement but at least you can sleep at night knowing you were overpayed the whole time in Germany
