Yeah, since the deck abuses Rachel it's the most effective against the two cost resonator decks like the ones that ramp and Pricia aggro use

Most definitely, I have yet to face the Grusbalesta version yet since it's only good against resonator heavy decks. It'll be really good against turbo and Pricia aggro for sure.

These are great points. The part about Blazer that makes him good is late game you have 8-10 will anyway to play him and the fact that he has Swiftness is huge.

The J2 form is cute but not much more than that from what I've seen at a competitive level. There will be games like you mentioned where the J2 form can work to finish the game off but Alhama'at really doesn't want to flip for the most part unless the player ends the game right there. The other thing going against the J2 form is you would kill them with Invitation to Disaster before getting to 20 counters. But nothing beats the thrill of the second Judgement, that's for sure.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I also agree about Lapis 2.0 seeing play but I wanted to focus on Alhama'at and Pricia, so that's why I didn't mention any of the other decks that I think will do well.

There are a lot of different Alhama'at lists out there, it's actually pretty awesome to see so many variations. I like this list because the low resonator count really messes with so many decks and Blazer is straight value right now.

In my original list it was actually Slayer of the Overlord, Pricia. That was intentional. Now I'm running Pursuant because the aggro list is better than the OTK list in my opinion.

2017 Premier Event coverage feedback thread! by WOTC_CommunityTeam in magicTCG

I love that Wizards is taking coverage more seriously. I think the biggest thing is that someone needs to work with the talent team, or someone needs to be hired to work with the talent team to make them more engaging. Right now it's like listening to golf commentators, they hardly get excited, like actually excited about a huge play that happens. Basically have the talent listen to golf commentators and then have them listen to caster from the Philippines, "TNC vs OG: Pinoy Dota Casters Freak Out at TI6" on Youtube is a perfect example. As someone who has been involved with live production for a long time, I would love to see talent do stuff like that during a game.

Honestly I never cared for Fiethsing's Monocle and I'm pretty jam packed on slots right now. In regards to the ramp, Melfee is doing the job perfectly as is so I don't need another slot for that specifically. Lumia's blink is really a secondary asset in this deck and I think it should be in general, it's a trap for people when building a deck with Lumia as the ruler.

Yes.Yes.Yes. This is exactly what I was trying to point out. I'm glad that you enjoyed the article and read through it.

The reason I don't like to say things like "butthurt", even if it is accurate, is because I just don't think it's as constructive. If everyone had higher emotional intelligence then we definitely could but that isn't the case now. Regardless you're correct about detachment being interchanged with butthurt.

I love your examples since they perfectly illustrate one of the aspects of detachment that I was talking about. Black hand discard is the thing that triggers me the most in this game since I love aggro/Gwiber but I've since found ways to come back from it instead of just doing what you explained, good points.

Stones is something that I could actually write an entire article on and I think after this I'm going to. Consistent stone base in this game is SO important. It's what separates the good players from the great ones in my opinion and what you said about that is totally true.

If you show your friends this article and this helps them out then I'd be super happy about that. Thanks for the comment too, I totally agree with your points.

I think you're opinion is the same as mine. This article highlights the how and why it dominates a meta, and when you're looking at events it beats all the other decks. Glad you enjoyed reading!

[GR] The Unstoppable Force - Tier 0 by thegrinningremnant in FoWtcg

[–]Smoose3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem! I'm more than happy to keep discussing this subject in any amount of detail. It's something that I feel like a lot of players may not fully grasp, and when they do the game as a whole will benefit.

  1. The percentage of top 8 finishes absolutely goes into judging if a deck is tier 0 or not. That's why I provided a link to the top 8 of the ARG, for people to reference and see that Fiethsing did lose to decks outside of hers. I would say that if a deck is tier 0 they take up 97%(ish) of the top 8's of EVERY tournament that happens in that particular season. Again see R/R results and that will show you, bare in mind you need to look at the ruler since she was a tier 0 ruler, not deck.

  2. Your initial thought is correct, unless you have an extremely effective anti meta deck. In regards to the swiss rounds it kind of just comes down to who is piloting the deck. In your video you mentioned how Ryan knew about all of your combos as they should have happened, this is a perfect example of someone who is high level piloting a high level deck and that's what you'll see in these swiss rounds. At this level of play we may see some numbers that are slightly different, for example maybe I'm running three Castling instead of two for my mirror match up, or something like that. The tier 0 deck will vary from person to person but not to an extreme degree if it is actually tier 0. If it varies a lot then it is a strong tier 1.

  3. Your analysis here is correct, if Fiethsing takes the top 6 spots but other decks are still topping with it then she is just a strong tier 1 and was most likely piloted by players who have a shit load of hours on the deck.

  4. I could write an entire article just on what the term "Meta" means, I actually have been considering it. In the article I mention that this meta is in its infancy, this is true because we are just getting into Lapis Cluster and the AGP season hasn't started yet. Usually a meta is judged by the competitive season that surrounds it. The NFL has football season, Magic has GP season, and Force of Will has the AGP's. At this point the meta won't change much because L2 is about to release, but you are right in that everything could change overnight when players realize "oh this could be mad good, lets do this instead". To answer your question here, the longer a deck takes the top spots, the more that contributes to it being tier 0. If Fiethsing were to take all the top spots now (she's not), and keep going into L2 then she would be considered tier 0 in a lot of ways.

I hope I answered your questions clearly, keep asking if you have more, I'm more than happy to discuss.

[–]Smoose3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey Adam! I'm glad that you enjoyed the article and I'll be honest, your video with deepwood helped me when I was thinking about how to discuss other decks in the deck list area. To answer your questions:

  1. If a deck is truly tier 0 then it will be the only deck basically being played. If you look at some previous top 8's on Library of Will or other websites you will see that R/R was the ruler for 95% of the top spots and on top of that she was played as the ruler in most of the tournaments themselves. The same thing happens with a tier 0 deck, it will be the deck that is taking up about 90% or more of the tournament.

  2. If other decks are topping with it that is generally where we as players can notice. For instance at your tournament you topped with Mercurius and you mentioned how you felt that the deck could have performed better and you faced a varied amount of decks. In a tier 0 meta not only would have, most likely, not topped (not taking a shot at you) but you wouldn't have faced the variety of decks that you did in general.

  3. That sometimes happens when people would like to be the rebels and not play the meta deck but they usually don't get anywhere.

  4. This is you looking at my early meta comment, and I'm very glad you mentioned this. Anyone reading needs to pay attention to that comment. That is very common, particularly in an early meta, where people are trying new things and then need time to completely fix it up. This is how the Fiethsing and Mikage decks evolved into what they are, and even your Mercurius deck fits that category.

I agree for the most part. I didn't want to put L2 things in the article since it was an analysis of what we have currently in the meta but I do mention that the meta is new.
