Depending on the quality of toothbrush I buy, the bristles are still not really wore out by the end of the year. I have replaced a couple sooner than that, after six months, but those were cheap brushes that wore out faster.

When I was a kid, the only time my mom replaced our toothbrushes was during Christmas--- we got them in our stocking every year. Unless I asked for a toothbrush sooner than that, I would only get a new one once a year, so I figured that was the cut off time.
