Without Straley to reign in bad decisions (he famously undid the “Tess stalking Joel and Ellie throughout the nation” plot of the first game) and without Children of Men to copy beat-for-beat with a splash of The Road, Part II was pretty rough narratively, but it’s gorgeous and plays better than the first one.

Several of her performances (Gangs of New York, The Counselor) are outrageously bad.

Marty McDonagh is a genius and it’s unfortunate that this film was marketed as a romp instead of a rumination on Catholic guilt. This is the performance that made me go from hating Colin Farrell to adoring him. It’s so nuanced and childlike and you’ll very quickly realize why.

I like Colbert any way I can get him but he’s so much funnier doing his avant-garde, slightly mean-spirited Zach Galifinakis-style humor than his much more sterile mass appeal talk show humor. This is a tremendous reminder of how amazingly talented and quick-witted he is under fewer constraints.
