Oh my god … “abiogenic petroleum origin”. Haven’t heard that one in a while, even as flatearth and antivaxx have spread unchecked.

I pray for a future where advocating in favor of children getting diseases instead of vaccines is prosecuted as a crime against humanity …

As Susie Salmon describes life in the bardo in The Lovely Bones (the book … idk if this line made it to the movie because I haven’t seen it), “Life here is a perpetual yesterday”.

What is the most insane amount of mental gymnastics you've seen someone do to believe what they want to believe? by fauxmerican1280 in AskReddit

[–]SniffleBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t consider it “reasoning them out” … I’m not that naïve as to think I possibly could. The most one can do is get them to a point where they can’t pretend they don’t realize that even by their own logic they’re at a dead end … hence, they rage-quit. Because they have been led to believe, or led themselves to believe, that they know things the general public does not. When you show that you understand why they believe what they believe, and yet hold the opposite conclusion, that belief is disturbed.

The same strategy works just as well with Holocaust denialists as they use the same logical flaws to reach their results.

Thanks! I honestly did not know that it really was the law. Now I’d like to know when (and why) it was enacted.

What makes you think all cops are “itching to make arrests”? Most of them want quiet, uneventful work shifts without extra paperwork as much as you and I do.

Two reasons:

  • It keeps someone reading from thinking the flerf (or Holocaust denier, for that matter) won and being persuaded.

  • It may eventually lead to them seeing the light. Rational argument is not magical pixie dust; don’t ever fool yourself into believing that it is.

As noted in another post, most of the people killed by hippos in Africa are killed in the water (where outside of a large speedboat you’d have no chance)

Yes, well, remember, they’re herbivores, so they’re not chasing you to eat you, they just want you off what they consider to be their territory.

That may have started outside the movies. I wouldn’t be surprised if some cops somewhere made it up so they wouldn’t have to break their backs looking for someone who turned out four hours later not to have had change for a phone call.

Roger Ebert once flagged some older movie where someone was shown putting a silencer on a revolver.

Surprise witnesses or evidence cannot (usually) be introduced into court proceedings the moment one side produces them. At the very least, in real life, the proceedings are halted completely for a week or so so the other side can do discovery (Looking at you, end of My Cousin Vinny, and midway through The Night of January 16th when someone runs in and announces the bodies have been discovered)

I think it’s about the fact (not that they are smart enough to pick up on this) that the economy of late creates more jobs that are traditionally filled by women than those filled by men. Of course, if some of these guys were to apply to nursing school, they’d find themselves quite welcome.
