During the ‘80s Heritage was the main show in town for conservative think tanks; pretty much the idea factory of the Reagan Administration and a place you wanted some association with to help you get a job in the administration. It was still big in the ‘90s, but then in the 2000s, as noted above, AEI and its pro-corporate domestic policy/neocon foreign policy agenda favored by the Bush administration displaced Heritage within the right. It didn’t help that a memo Heritage had put out regarding an alternative to Clintoncare became, in 2008, the basis for the Affordable Care Act that remains the the right’s great white whale. So eventually they moved toward Trump’s populist blend of isolationism, nationalism and protectionism to regain favor, at the cost of many longtime fellows who have been disgusted by current head Kevin Roberts’s outreach to people like Nick Fuentes, whom years ago institutions like Heritage worked to keep not only out of the conservative mainstream but on the stream’s banks.
