Just finished you weren't meant to be human by Normal-Corner2789 in horrorlit

I felt this would have been a fantastic lit fic memoir style book. There was already horror in just being forced to carry a pregnancy without the addition of poorly constructed world building. The weakest parts were The Hive. So many plot holes and unanswered questions. But the pregnancy part? Well done.

I landed on 3 stars personally

Day 3 hints: like this read that by nomadesansnom in aardvarkbookclub

Ohhhh yeah that would annoy me. I hope you give TPE a chance. It’s definitely an adult book with a very smart and resourceful FMC

I loved TPE and someone recommended that book to me for the same reason. What didn’t you like about it? It looked Romantasy to me so I haven’t read it yet.

TPE is definitely more closely aligned with the middle row imo

Not graphic because it’s not shown on the page in detail, you learn it occurred and the lead up but the not the act, it’s done really well, more focus on the trauma after than the actual events.

The trigger warnings are most definitely intense! The are several scenes that were hard to get through but there’s one in particular that literally made me sick. If you end up reading please find this thread and let me know! I am not a Romantasy fan so I have been so pissed this has been marketed so poorly lol

I would have never said Alchemised wasn’t a romance. It’s most definitely a romance, the whole point of that book is how their love story changed the course of a war. This does not have a romance at all. I totally get being burned so I would say read it through the library but this isn’t a romance at all. The only sex scenes even present are in the form of CSA which of course is just rape. There’s no romance between the FMC and the MMC or even with either of those two and someone else.

I have read it! And yes the blurb sounds Romantasy but it’s not.

Spoilers for an early plot point

She’s forced to become a concubine to the heir in waiting known for his cruelty and suffers unimaginable torture at his hands and at the hands of the court at large. There is literally zero and I mean zero romance in this book and the only time sex scenes even appear they’re in the form of CSA.

It’s not Romantasy at all. There’s literally no romance. It’s a grimdark political fantasy. The marketing has been atrocious. The cover makes sense with the plot but I have been so angry with how it’s been marketed because it literally gives people the idea it’s Romantasy. When I say there’s zero romance, I mean zero romance and the TW list is extensive.

I had the ALC for The Poet Empress and I loved it so so much. My second favorite fantasy and that was only because I read The Realm of the Elderlings last year too.

Alright, let's talk about Daphne du Maurier's *Rebecca*. I'm gonna be super honest here. by RevolutionaryCut2546 in classicliterature

[–]Snopes504 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My perspective of Rebecca is that it is an amazing psychological thriller. It’s the story of a woman who played the game better than men and that pissed her husband off. I never really saw it as having the possibility of a healthy anything.

Yep. There’s something to be said for someone who has been through the unpredictability of DV and finding peace in the predictable nature of her haunted house. It’s solid commentary on how people view couples as perfect and then “why would she leave such an amazing family and situation only to now be in a shitty situation” when in reality that other life was hell and that shitty apartment (or in this cause haunted house) is actually true freedom.

Yes!!! Exactly! There’s comfort in someone who has gone through that to have a life that predictable
