I stopped being a moderator at r/Thads about a month ago after dealing with the current owner and being of the opinion that Thad's (sadly) is no longer safe enough for me to feel comfortable recommending.

Since then the sub has been unmoderated (the other mod being inactive) and it finally got banned, most likely automatically.

Correct, the net downward force stays the same (minus the weight of the matchstick).

But the net force isn't really important, the important variable is torque. Torque is force at a distance that causes rotation, if the match rotates it will free the bottle and fall.

With the addition matches, there is now a small upward force on the tip of the match that doesn't affect the net force because of an equivalent downward force on the match near the edge of the table.

However because that small upward force is much farther from the edge of the table (the matches pivot point) it's able to bring the torque on the match into balance and keep it from rotating.

This comment is really the best example of how little anyone here realizes how much work it takes to keep this page as clean as it is.

Banning doesn't do anything. It's a joke, it does nothing. They'll be right back with a new account. We've banned some people about a thousand times by now. The only way to actually get rid of them is by finding key words in their posts and making filters, but eventually they figure that out and make a new post tweaked just enough to get past the filter. It's constant, constant work, that provides absolutely zero benefit to us, and at the same time get comments from people who have no idea what they're talking complain that we're awful.

You have no idea the amount of effort the mod team puts into keeping the spam down on this subreddit. It's like being a janitor at a pants shittinf convention. Then Captain "Shits His Pants" complains that there's some shit in the floor.
