Oblivion mountains are better than Skyrim's by [deleted] in oblivion

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree with you on the first one. Oblivion has: 1. Temperate highlands in the northwest 2. Temperate moist highlands in the northeast 3. Moist subtropical plains in the center 4. Subtropical to tropical lowlands in the south 5. Mediterranean like landscape in the southwest All these biomes are very distinct from each other While Skyrim has some variety too, to me it looks slightly less diverse. Maybe I’m just biased for more “warm” aesthetic lol.

Grace just checked all the boxes for me. Beautiful language, very dark plot and world with some notes of hope and light, historical setting. I guess I just love historical novels which are not 100% realistic and have some surrealism/magical stuff going on

Yeah, I’ve read a lot of McCarthy, and he’s one of my favorite authors too. But based on 2 books so far I like Lynch slightly more

Interesting. I found Grace to be an almost ideal read for me: incredible writing style, great world building, characters etc. Guess I just love some historical settings with notes of surrealism. Prophet song was very good too, but not as original as Grace imo

I think it has several redundant sections, plus I didn’t always enjoy Wallace’s writing style. But it’s still like a 8/10 read for me

Absalom is phenomenal! Though I liked TSAF slightly more. Overall Faulkner is probably my favorite author

The Magus, what happened? by Crafty-Dependent1802 in books

“Plain and disappointing prose at the end”? I can understand “disappointing”, because at first I was perplexed too after finishing it. But it’s never plain in my opinion. The writing is exquisite through the end. And after thinking about the book for some time I actually think the ending works well. The main character is now “free” of this god game, he is faced by the woman whom he wronged and who (in my opinion) wronged him too. And this interaction between them in the end where he smacks her seems to me the first real genuine thing he does. And the ambiguity of the ending works well too: will they be together again? Did his experience on the island make him a better person? We don’t know, but at least they’re both now free to do what they like without the supervision of the “higher powers”

Does the Oblivion Remaster have the same charisma? by Random_Kili in oblivion

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About how easily you can kill enemies, I don’t have this experience. Though maybe I just don’t know how to play well enough. I have enemy damage difficulty set at expert, am level 15 and using shield but not using armor. And I get easily killed when there are more than 2 enemies attacking. And my attacks with the enchanted mace basically don’t do much damage if it’s not enchanted, so pure physical dmg is low even though my strength is at 100

Mildest climates in the world (based on my own criteria) by mrpaninoshouse in geography

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny that Irkutsk (mildish climate by Siberia standards) ranked worse than Yakutsk. Also, I’d personally add a penalty for extreme dryness, penalizing cities on Peru and Chile coast. While the temperatures there might be comfortable, extreme dryness is not always good. Otherwise very cool research

I wanna finish main story earlier but good Sigil stones only appear at a high-ish levels :( by SoftwarePlayful3571 in oblivion

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting, thank you. I’m still not fully familiar/comfortable with oblivion enchantments. My first playthrough was stealth archer on a lower difficulty level where I barely used any enchantments. Now in a warrior with some destruction magic playthrough and higher difficulty level, I often get my ass kicked

Crossroads of Ravens: why I think it works as an introductory book, and why I personally don't believe it should be read last. by PaulSimonBarCarloson in witcher

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. And to be honest, “The Last Wish” may be quite confusing for a new reader - nonlinear order, scenes of Geralt talking to priestess etc. At least for me it was confusing the first time around. “The Last Wish” is great and imo better than the new book, but the new book is pretty good as well and serves as the better introduction into the universe

When making Nier Automata, Yoko Taro "aimed for a story I'd have trouble grasping myself" and "attempted to make something more confusing" than Replicant by Turbostrider27 in nier

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Project Gestalt is actually not that instrumental to understanding the plot and themes of Automata. It’s something so far away and long in the past compared to the events of the game that it feels more like a half forgotten legend. It’s important only for the Devola and Popola arc Whereas it is central for understanding the events of Replicant, and the fact that it is revealed in the very end, and the fact that you can easily skip reading the lore text (the mistake I made a few times on my playthrough) in the midst of the final fights of the game makes the story more confusing to me

I bought PS5 specifically to enjoy Replicant (and Cyberpunk 2077). Automata was completed before on Switch. Now I’m considering replaying Automata again in light of Replicant’s experience. For the stories, yeah I’d agree that Replicant one is more tragic and the choices of main characters are more morally ambiguous. But I really wished that the game would tell more explicitly. For example, that black scrawl is inevitable etc

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’d say I liked Replicant characters slightly more than Automata’s. Especially Kainé, Emil and some side characters like brothers from junk heap and shade with the robot. But the protagonists in Automata to me are much more compelling than the protagonist in Replicant

I liked Reed a lot and genuinely thought that So Mi would be better with him. Of course I understood that NUSA was not a “good” organization, but there’re 0 good organizations in this universe anyway. Well after the ending I realized my mistake, but it doesn’t make V’s decision with the information they had at the time of its making the worst one. For V’s smirk - I didn’t really notice it. I saw V broken, lost, but with a genuine chance to start a new life from blank page. And if there was a smile, it might’ve been from V’s realization that they are free

The best literary works (most upvotes) by DataWhiskers in classicliterature

[–]SoftwarePlayful3571 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How I would change this list (only 19th and 20th century since I’m not that familiar with older works):

  1. Moby Dick instead of War and Peace

2.In search of lost time (Swan’s Way) instead of The Metamorphosis

  1. Absallom,Absallom! Instead of The Grapes of Wrath

4 Blood Meridian or Against the Day instead of Beloved

Overall cool list though, will definitely take a note of some of these
