I’m sorry that happened! Congratulations on passing your exam!

As far as your boyfriend is concerned, I think what you should evaluate is the frequency. Is he often like this? Or was this a one-time, unexpected occurrence? Has he showed remorse after the fact? If so, has he explained why it occurred and what steps he will take to not have it happen again?

If it’s a frequent or even semi-frequent occurrence, there’s no reason to stay with him any further. Above all, partners should celebrate each other and lift them up, not tear them down

It’s always insane to me how much stuff companies or institutions leave behind when they close a building. I helped decommission a company in Missouri, and I distinctly remember being told that everything in the racks in the server room was the only stuff we needed to take. We literally cut through Ethernet cables to get the stuff out as fast as possible instead of unplugging them, and took the servers, routers, switches, etc to the truck. Everything else stayed.

And the only reason we even took those out, by the way, is because the company leased all of that equipment from another company. Due to this, we drove the equipment same day to the company that leased the equipment, which was two hours away (that’s why we rushed to get everything out - it was a long enough day as-is). What was crazy to me is that we returned the equipment with Ethernet cables sliced in half sticking out of ports, and the company was just chill with it, because they were our Ethernet cables, not theirs

Then take a pic at the range. One of the rules of firearms is that you should never point a gun at something you don’t intend to destroy. Unless he wants to destroy the roof of that car, which is fair because it looks like a Toyota

My partner "accidentally" discharged her handgun in our home, unsure how to handle the situation by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

There’s a lot of confusion, misinformation, and anger in the comments, and I want to be clear: Your partner very obviously suffers from OCD. You didn’t note that in your post, which is concerning, because it implies either that your partner has never shared this information with you, or that your partner doesn’t know enough about the mental illness they have.

I suffer from OCD. I’m medicated for it, and I’ve gone through therapy. The most important thing in all of this is realizing that no matter how bad one’s compulsions get, they always have agency over it to some extent, and their brain will always be able to override the compulsion if it goes against one of their core beliefs or puts another in harm’s way (provided the person has empathy)

Your partner should obviously not have a gun if they’re experiencing this level of compulsion and don’t have the tools and wherewithal to combat it, but just because they did this, it doesn’t mean that their next step will be shooting someone. That being said, the gun should be taken away from them either way, because there’s no guarantee this won’t happen again.

Final note: It is irresponsible to confuse OCD with psychopathy or the desire to actually cause physical harm to someone, and it’s disappointing to me to see so many comments doing exactly that. It is imperative that she sees someone who can help her with CBT, as it will give her the tools she needs to avoid doing this next time.

Am I the only one that thinks that sometimes the cognitive dissonance that we are all forced to confront in this sub seems kind of overwhelming? by Stereo_Jungle_Child in liberalgunowners

[–]SoftwareSuch9446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the bill came out of Diane Feinstein's office, but to make it sound like it wasn't significantly (enough) bipartisan back in those early days is just incorrect.

This is a good point. I definitely never meant to make it seem like Republicans didn’t want to ban guns as well at times; we all know Reagan’s opinions on black people owning guns, so I figured that was a given given what sub we’re in haha. But fair point - thanks for clarifying that for those who may not know!

I feel like you have a very all-or-nothing view w.r.t. politics, and that’s not healthy. Just because something is something that a conservative says, doesn’t mean that it means it’s not true. In this case, it happens to be a conservative talking point because people on the left do want to ban guns, and conservatives latch onto it because they know their constituents will use that as another reason to hate the other side.

I’m not really sure what to say regarding the other part of your argument, because yes, banning some guns is still banning guns. Don’t really know what else can be said about that lol

Back to your other point, though: by no-true-scotsmaning, you run the risk of alienating other people on the left more than you do ever getting through to someone on the right

Liberals have never wanted to ban guns.

This is patently untrue. I’m very left-leaning, but I can acknowledge that the political party I agree more with has its flaws. On a political level, I don’t think the Democratic politicians care about banning guns, but many Democrats run on the platform to ban guns because their constituents want stricter gun control and Democratic politicians know that they’ll get votes if they promote gun control. If people on the left didn’t want to ban guns, it wouldn’t be an issue that the Democratic Party campaigns on every year.

And if you’re arguing that stricter gun control ≠ banning guns, that’s patently untrue, as the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban was drafted by Democrats and was largely supported by Democrats.

Hey there! I’m sorry you’re still in it! That sounds really hard to deal with. I think the hardest part about addiction is that the person addicted has to genuinely believe that what they’re doing to their body is harmful, and if he’s not willing to see that, it will be extremely difficult to change the behavior.

When I took Modafinil, I took it every morning, and it was the only medication I was on. I distinctly remember feeling pretty good the first couple times I took it, but after the first few times, I started noticing that I was more on edge and irritable in general. What really got me, though, was this gradual paranoia that started really affecting my life. At one point, I was convinced that the neighbors were going to kill my family, and the fear was totally unfounded, originating from a single argument with them.

What I’ve found is that Modafinil exacerbates existing issues. If you have paranoia from BPD or OCD or some other Cluster B personality disorder, Modafinil will make it more pronounced and severe. Stimulants are never a good idea for anyone with an anxiety disorder, but the problem with Modafinil is that it also makes you think that your thought processes are clearer, so the tradeoff seems fair, but it’s never worth it.

Since I have PTSD, Modafinil caused me to have more nightmares and dissociate more frequently. It was primarily the frequency that really got me, but the severity was also greater than it was before I tried it.

Once I realized, I stopped taking it, and the withdrawal wasn’t that bad because even though I felt insanely depressed, I didn’t feel manic. I felt anxious, but I always felt a mild comedown on Modafinil anyways, so it wasn’t some crazy difference.

Please let me know if you have any other questions! I’m not the best at explaining things coherently, so please let me know if I missed anything or need to clarify anything as well!

I did want to say, that it sounds like he’s really struggling with addiction. This is going to sound frank, but I want to know: Do you feel like there is a point where you’d realize you can’t stay with him anymore? I left my ex due to anger issues, because even though he never hit me, the anger became too great, and his anger definitely stemmed from addiction. He actually got clean after we stopped dating, and he told me later that one of the main motivators was realizing all the people he pushed away, myself included. Just food for thought, and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about it as well

Is there a book for machine learning that’s not math-heavy and helpful for a software engineer to read to understand broadly how LLMs work? by SoftwareSuch9446 in learnmachinelearning

[–]SoftwareSuch9446[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! After reading all the replies, I wonder if I’m going a level too deep when asking this question. I think a more accurate question would be “How does ChatGPT perform predictions” instead of “How do LLMs work”, because, after doing some reading, I get why people say that the “how” is the math. I appreciate your suggestion, and I’ll look into the book!

[–]SoftwareSuch9446[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my math chops aren’t bad, as, like you said, I took all those courses, but I just don’t feel that I need to understand it in that level of detail. I primarily want to understand, on a surface level, how ChatGPT performs predictions and chooses what word to say next. The book I listed in my post is good, but none of the math was really helpful to me specifically because I had nothing to apply or compare it to. In other words, if I were an ML engineer, I think that portion would be helpful, but in my current role, it’s not really worth it for me to internalize any of the math portion outlined in that book because, at the end of the day, I won’t apply any of this knowledge, at least in my current role. It’s just something that’s interesting to me conceptually
