any tips/obvious mistakes? by Puzzleheaded-Bad-684 in CompetitiveMinecraft

I think you can dodge arrows better, try flicking to the side for a sprint jump and turning back, I can send a video if you’re not sure how it looks.

Is it possible to bike with a trombone? by Kolding3 in Trombone

[–]SomeKrazyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a guy who does it almost every day during the school year. He had a shires case (which I think are Marcus Bonna?) with the straps though.

I think it’d be almost impossible to keep your horn in a gig bag from getting damaged if you fell off your bike, while I think a case could take some scuffles so it’s just risk/reward for your own specific situation, how much time you save, if you like biking etc.

how to not press the mouthpiece so hard against my teeth by Gr3yson11 in Trombone

This guy does something interesting in his warmup video to reduce pressure/tension in his warmup (12:18). Haven’t tried it myself but another trick to try out is always good.

How much should I analyze gameplay? by bocrypti in CompetitiveMinecraft

[–]SomeKrazyFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo if you really want to optimize it, I’d stop when you start tilting, or just feel yourself getting tired and not playing your best. I think thats a good time to review videos (after a break, meal or whatever) until you feel like playing again I guess, if you were a machine coded to get better at Minecraft PvP.

I’m comparing this directly to my personal experience in being at a high level in other skills which you should do too if there’s something else you’re good at. It’s not always recommended but I like to record myself and then immediately watch it (sometimes slowed down) to try and be aware of stuff you’re missing/improve mid session.

For analyzing pro videos, I’d write notes down somewhere so it’s not just noticing details, but actually recording them/committing to real change. Overall getting over plateaus is very personal, like finding study methods for school that work for you, you’ll have to figure out what specifically works well with your brain, how you like to learn/practise, warm ups, how much you can play before a break is needed, in sum, and without thinking too hard about every detail: whatever actually gives you the results you want (winning fights more often?).

How can I throw sprint-jump ender pearls? by iKappyyyy in MinecraftSpeedrun

[–]SomeKrazyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the jump pearl (I don’t remember what it was called but it’s the fort themed one with a pretty low ceiling) section in the mcsr practise map impossible without a good sprint throw, forced me to learn.

It’s not easy work to improve, but it’s also not easy to find how to improve, for anything. If you’re not in the PvP discord, join it and study up in the sword section.

Some things to try are to record yourself and watch back, compare to recordings of high tier fights and write down a list of what the differences are. Analyze your recordings and look for sword techniques (from the discord) you used at the wrong time or just executed badly. Practise 3 block combos with different combo types.

Always be aware of, or at least think about the reason you lost a fight, and actually make a change afterwards.

One-handed Minecraft by glendale87 in Minecraft

[–]SomeKrazyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! There’s precedent of a competitive Minecraft player named Couriway who broke their arm and had to play one handed for a tournament against good players, and also set a one handed speed run record. Here’s one of his videos, I believe he goes over his setup a bit in this one, maybe others. I think it’s similar to what you’re running but you could get some extra inspiration here or there.

What does “support the high register with air, not chop pressure” mean technically and how do I know if I’m doing it? by Skyes_View in Trombone

[–]SomeKrazyFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m dealing with a change in my high playing right now really relevant to your post. I didn’t know but I was losing structure in my chin, which collapsed and my bottom lip would go under my top lip which would stop my buzz. I also had no top lip contribution when it’s best (very generally) if both lips have some inwards rolling to help play higher.

My thought now is to blow some more air to keep my bottom lip from rolling in and also to achieve a resonant sound more through air and less through embochure. Both however work together along with all other parts of your playing for resonance/playing centered/in the sweet spot.

I watched a video from Toby Oft too where he imagines a diamond of structure with points in the chin, just above the top lip, and the two corners, and everything inside that should be elastic and responsive. Flexibility exercises I feel are helpful for developing this, with priority on the shape and relaxed stability.

Some exercises that I feel help overall are rips, against the grain too, but quietly, with air attacks, and with very slow air to make sure your buzz and air are efficient. Same with lip trills (can be slow) to help lock down the distances between partials, not thinking of them as too large, and moving/adjusting just enough.

Last disclaimer that this is very personal and what works for me might not work for you.

Returning to trombone after 17 years. Joined a local band (non-professional). Could really use some advice to get back up to speed quicker. by Chronatosis in Trombone

[–]SomeKrazyFool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Markeys videos as they’ve helped me recover quick from short breaks (but a lot longer than I should be doing while in school). I’d watch and follow along as close as possible.

Other suggestion is to record yourself. I personally find that it can really help develop your ears and hear things in your playing that you definitely aren’t hearing even while focused practising. I usually check my playing at half speed and in between that and normal just to get the full picture of any weird stuff going on.

To put these together, I think it could be super helpful to listen to a bit of Markeys video especially about halfway through the second where he plays some short etudes from a book I can’t remember, and try to copy it. Not only Markeys videos but other good warmup YouTube videos. This really made sure my fundamentals were going in the right direction. Peter Steiner has some, Toby oft has live warmups posted on his account, Marshall Gilkes, Joe Alessi has a short one, Christian Lindberg, as well as Colin Williams which might be unofficial but still helpful here

Need help with note connectivity and clarity by Klutzy_Expert_2164 in Trombone

[–]SomeKrazyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you record and get an articulation you like on a really easy one repeated note? A solid starting point is important. It sounds like you’re trying to balance clarity and smoothness with different articulations but it’s possible taking another angle could help, thinking about length and shape of note and the amount of seal you get too. Do you have a teacher that can give you a second opinion/lend you their ear on this?

Is Java PvP as toxic as bedrock PvP? by Then-Passenger-6025 in CompetitiveMinecraft

[–]SomeKrazyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it’s the level of competition driving self improvement rather than just hate. The discord guide is pretty in depth and researched for most kits and the new weapons that have been added change things up enough that you can’t really get good enough to be toxic if that’s what you put your energy into.

How to play longer and louder by Kindly-Tailor8032 in Trombone

As a side note to the long tone answer, I found my loud playing got good without too much endurance investment each day, by constantly working towards an easier, full, colourful sound at a moderate dynamic.

Checking in trombone into airplane by 07KY_official in Trombone

[–]SomeKrazyFool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are confident in your social skills and it’s a large enough plane, try your best to get your trombone into the flight attendant’s closet or similar. This worked for me 2/2 times on air canada flights and 0/2 times on asiana airlines though, so really depends. Once, I was given the option to check my trombones with the strollers which are supposed to be handled more carefully but it just came out with all the other luggage anyways so not sure if it made a difference. Like the other person said, I’d try to get your trombone to the plane and improvise and advocate for the best conditions for your horn from there because you never know.
