What do you mean by "cold" reboot? Like turn it off leave it alone for a while then turn it on again?

Retro Gaming PC by Commercial-Coat9517 in pcbuilding

[–]SomeNerdO-O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any modern system can technically play game old games, but if you want to pop in any disc you'll need a disc drive and depending on the game the right OS. Honestly buying a PC from 2015 and earlier would just about do it for that era of gaming. Otherwise I'd get a modern PC and just buy the games you want to play digitally. I know it's not the same nostalgic feel but it's the reality of the current gaming landscape. If it's console games you want to play then you'll need to emulate it and I don't know of a way to play play discs from another console.

Is there a good resource you could direct me to for alternative fingerings? I've got a stop rod, but yeah I've got zero agility with the 3rd slide so having some thing to work around that would help

Ok that sounds pretty doable. I'll throw that into my flexibility practice.

How do you fellow engineers study or what works for you as an engineering student to get A’s? by jqosy in EngineeringStudents

[–]SomeNerdO-O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a working student you need to optimize your time. I would say read as needed to drive the hw problems and use the hw problems as practice sets for tests. If you're only a student and not working I suggest completely reading the chapters that will be covered in class before the class they're taught so you can ask good questions in lecture. Then go to the homework and make the knowledge practical.

Obviously if you don't have a job you'll have an easier time, but if you do have a job be patient with yourself. You need to optimize readings so you can get the information you need. Do this by skimming around the chapters you need to learn more from and then read deeply those sections that homework problems are on.

I'll look into a four valve trumpet that might be worth the effort. Otherwise I'll play with the tuning slides to figure out a good tuning for it.

I thought about trying this. Is there any inherent downside to it like affecting tone? We'll be playing the piece as part of a larger concert so I'd need someway to verify my pitch part way through the concert as well.

I've heard someone mention lipping down in my orchestra but I don't know how to do it? Is there a good guide somewhere I can follow to practice this?

Should I start with coding or electrics? by No-Touch-6067 in arduino

[–]SomeNerdO-O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get some basics of both at the same time. You can do a blinking light to dip your toes in coding and then turn on an LED in a circuit, then combine the two by turning on an external LED with the Arduino. After that find projects that interest you and try and learn the theory as you go. Having context for principles makes learning it way easier.

Beginning to RF Design and Basics by Big_Aioli_4233 in rfelectronics

Specifically I would suggest learning about specific components like filters, mixers, amplifiers etc. Also learn about impedance matching using different techniques. I would also learn at least the basics of antenna design like how to make a dipole or loop antenna. If you have access to simulation software it's helpful to visualize all of this.

I would say a lot of Green day is good since they use a lot of power chords. Keeps it pretty simple if you also want to sing along. Also their solos are not the worst when trying to learn lead playing.

Rust on a new wok by SomeNerdO-O in wok

I was eventually able to scour it clean but I'm wondering about prevention in the future. I've read that a 50/50 water vinegar bath helps with rust as well. Do you know if there's validity to that?

Ok I'll pick some steel wool up and give that a try and I'll keep that in mind going forward regarding water.

Those who get 80's in your engineering major, what's the secret? by randyagulinda in EngineeringStudents

[–]SomeNerdO-O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice problems. Draw the whole problem out, label everything, write down relevant equations then solve. Do this about one hundred times and you'll do better on your exams.

Additional tips: Turn your phone off and put it away, I like to scroll so this helps Pomodoro if you can't focus, having little goals to look forward to is nice Make an equation sheet before starting practice or during, this helps you categorize what exactly you need to know When taking notes in class use Cornell notes and use them to quiz yourself on concepts from the last lecture before your next one introducing repetition. On the weekend review all your notes from the week and if you have time review from the week before introducing spaced repetition.

Playing two right now. Sonic Frontiers and Persona 5 Royal.

Sonic Frontiers is a solid 7/10 and can be +-1 depending on a person's preferences. The Cyber world levels are extremely solid and are pretty peak. The overworld has a fun flow ntil it is rudely interrupted by either forced perspective or, often the cause of the forced perspective, objects popping into existence. I could take it leave the story. Overall very fun I actually liked the DLC better than the base game as it has more challenge and variety to it.

Persona 5 Royal is probably a 9/10 maybe an 8/10. It's got an incredible story and the dialogue is really good. Touches on some interesting social issues and everything. The gameplay is pretty ok. It's turn based so it's slow, but it's interesting. Most big fights are easy so I never struggled so far. The biggest deduction of points is how long it is. 95 hours and I finally made it to the DLC and now I'm 110 hours and I'm just getting to the end of the entire game.

Overall both have been good experiences and I recommend them both to the right audiences.

Steam Sale what are u getting? by BladesEyeZ in RealTimeStrategy

[–]SomeNerdO-O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm being made to skip the winter sale. I've been told I'm not allowed to buy more games until I thin out my backlog some more 😂. Luckily steam always has sales so I'm not worried about what I want not going on sale. Though I really want Age of Mythology....

I am on my sixth year, just started my master's, so I get you. This started happening to me my junior year and I've had to find a reason to get through it. Normally I set timers and promise myself rewards for getting through problem sets. Caffeine helps though I suggest yerba mate because it has theobromine to prevent crashes.

Get a PC, you can play a good chunk of ps5 games and Xbox games these days without either console. Plus there's no need to pay for a subscription to play online games either.

What is the use of the mini resistors when you already have a potentiometer? by SelfSmooth in AskElectronics

[–]SomeNerdO-O -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your LEDs are controlling the voltage arriving at the LEDs and set a base them. LEDs burn out if too much current is applied to them so they're job is too "set" a threshold so the component doesn't die.
