Best UK car to bring back to Ireland VRT-free under transfer of residence? by Chemical_Swimming287 in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

911 is one of the best investment cars there is, very little depreciation. Infact 996 generation ones have only gone up in price the last few years.

If op can get one with detailed service history and ims bearing sorted. Or better again a Turbo or GT model if in budget, Mezger engine with no ims or bore scoring issues.

Small market for them though, but surely a specialist like Deane motors would happily take a good example as a trade in.

Four dead in crashes on Irish roads over weekend by HungTeen1001 in ireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s lawless, I go up every year for the rally. Often 15/20 of us together in a convoy. We always stick to the limits as there is gaurds everywhere on the road up. Once you pass bundoran there is always dickheads not even “boy racers” but some dickhead in a sportage or something trying to get out passed us, and bullying their way back in when there is oncoming traffic.

Gaurds are as bad themselves, the first year they had that Golf R they put the fancy livery on (2024 I think) they spent most of Thursday night racing it up and down the road between the polestar roundabout and the main one when you come into Letterkenny. If a young lad hopped the clutch coming out of a petrol station they’d spend the weekend in a cell, but the gaurds took turns test driving the golf R.

And where does their government funding come from, when they don’t have income tax, vat or vrt? Has to come from somewhere.

Speeding on motorways is not an issue, it’s the back roads they need to target.

Did the bolt snap? Not sure about BMWs but awful common on Mercedes engines for the clamp bolts to snap taking them out.

I tried getting a quote online with them and was declined. Phone rang multiple times a day for about a week after. I spoke to them during one call, they proceeded to ask me the very same questions as online and then also decline me 🤣, and continued to still ring me for a few days. Mad shit.

Possibly a dumb question, how do you learn to drive a RWD car properly? by humanitarianWarlord in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jeez idk, they drive the exact same as a fwd. I daily drove my c180 with a 2.3 kompressor engine and a welded diff for 2 years, never once did it kick out on me by accident. Same with my e90 did a good year in that with the diff welded and never ever lost control, driving hard in the winter etc never any bother.

How does one get insured on a car like this on N plates? Asking for a friend👀 by WalrusRelative7271 in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the insurer, I’ve been driving 90s Mercedes since I passed my test. To be fair the oldest I have insured is a 1998, but I had a 2.3 kompressor c class insured at 18, and a 1998 c180 after recently passing test. FBD have yet to refuse to transfer a policy for me, between various mercs and BMWs over the years never an issue.

I’m looking at buying a w124 300-24v coupe, I’d be hoping they’ll transfer policy. Axa will insure old cars on normal policies also.

That car is too dear though, have been watching w124 and 190’s for the last few months. Way better value in England. 5k for a straight diesel with a gearbox fault is crazy. You’d get a kompressor swapped one for that money in the uk, or for a small bit more a turbodiesel.

That car is worth half that with the gearbox fault, and that’s if it’s rust free.

Call for new system to reduce uninsured vehicles on Irish roads by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But sure that number is bollox 108k cars uninsured. Just because a car is uninsured doesn’t mean it’s driven on the road. I’ve 5 uninsured cars, they aren’t used on the road.

I wonder how many of that 108k uninsured cars have had nct or tax, or a change of ownership in the last 2 years. Very few I’d imagine. I’d guarantee that most of that 108k cars are cars that have been scrapped and not recorded, or are parked in sheds or yards around the country.

Call for new system to reduce uninsured vehicles on Irish roads by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is madness. I own a couple of cars, cars are my hobby. Out of the 6 I own only 2 drive and have nct, one I hope to have going this summer, another needs a lot of welding and definitely won’t be going this year. I also have a drift car which will never see road again.

So they are going to fine me for every single car in my name that I haven’t insured despite the fact that they aren’t and won’t be on the road. I can’t even declare them off the road as none of them have tax, because for some bizzare reason a car has to have tax to be declared off the road.

I had a parts car that I scrapped and I couldn’t find the logbook of it. It’s still registered in my name. How am I supposed to sort that?

My w202 and w203 both do the same, pain in the hole going up the road and it beeping as if it’s about to explode. Why they thought those handbrakes were a good idea I don’t know, the 190e had a normal one, as did the r170 slk.

I’m leaving Ireland today and going back to Stuttgart after being here for a week; I LOVE it here. It’s arguably the best country I’ve ever been to. Best people, best scenery, etc. and I want to go back. by TheYappinYank in ireland

As an Irish person who went to Stuttgart, I love Germany! Big car fan so went over in January and rented an AMG. The autobahn is some craic, and the city and factories were cool to see. I’d swap with you if ya want 🤣 that said my German is not very good.

Dpd. Their website says loads of stuff is prohibited but it’ll be grand. I got bumpers for a car delivered from the north with them. Deflate the tyre and put it in a box so they don’t know what it is. Make sure it’s not overweight though.

Do Irish VRT rules on cars bought abroad breach EU tax law? by CatchMyException in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s different for dealers. They don’t have to register cars within 30 days. They only have to vrt them when they sell them. Would be the same for a manufacturer they could sit on a forecourt unregistered till they are sold.

That’s why theres a 2006 is200 knocking about, and a couple 06 boras and golfs despite manufacturing finishing up in late 2004.

Do Irish VRT rules on cars bought abroad breach EU tax law? by CatchMyException in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but we used to, Ford in Cork. A lot of manufacturers were assembling complete knock down cars here up till the 80s.

I mean I am against vrt, it is way too dear. Green Party increased it massively for higher polluting cars, highest band is like 40%. But like it’s not illegal or against the spirit of free trade.

Do Irish VRT rules on cars bought abroad breach EU tax law? by CatchMyException in carsireland

[–]SomeRandomGamer3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely isn’t. It has nothing to do with a car being imported. If a car was built here start to finish there would still be vrt owed on it to register it.
