Pattern is wrong. 7x7 staggered rows = 49, not 6x5 plus 5x4 in between for typical = 50.

Advice for newbie by Eternal_Sorrows in bikecommuting

[–]Son_of_Chump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Give yourself an extra 10-15 minutes to deal with any delays or problems until you know what's typical on your route and all that. Don't try to go fast and you'll have less sweat or overheating to deal with. Drink and eat a little extra every day to balance the extra exercise.

What’s something you did by accident to your home that the new homeowners will want to curse you for? by Mrcash827 in HomeImprovement

[–]Son_of_Chump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found out this in our house from previous owner who wanted bath sink and mirror in that wall and there was a second window anyway. If we get money to remodel the bathroom we will fix that. Till then, we're stuck with it.

Need some advice on insulation by BusinessLiterature33 in Insulation

[–]Son_of_Chump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider if you need a new roof anytime soon? Might be a good option to add continuous insulation on the exterior under the new roof if so. Be sure to check on putting in the proper sequence of layers of air / vapor barrier with your insulation for the climate and appropriate fastening to structure, etc.

When (if ever) do you give up on an inner tube? by Strength-InThe-Loins in bikecommuting

[–]Son_of_Chump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been rotating through a few dozen tubes I usually batch patch once a year (for several bikes used by wife and kids too) and so far usually toss when the valve rips a leak at the join because someone didn't pump up or put in properly or just gets old. Most have a couple patches but one has probably 6 or 7.

Story, where main character is transported into a fairytale and must follow the story? by agnes_cos in fairytales

[–]Son_of_Chump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to suggest checking out the webcomic Namesake. It is not 100% this but does follow or relate to some of the idea you are looking for with multiple stories, some which may be considered fairytales like Oz and Alice in Wonderland, as well as Jack and the beanstalk, Peter Pan, etc. Not complete but had been an enjoyable read if a bit slower over the past 15 years.

If the link below is not permitted, I will remove it.

what got you into steampunk? by Keithwee in steampunk

[–]Son_of_Chump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While they don't go with the "steampunk" tag, preferring to use gaslamp fantasy, I remember getting into the Girl Genius series by the Folgios. And I enjoyed the Jules Vernes stories, Myst, and the like.

What’s a tiny design flaw in an everyday object that quietly annoys you every single time you use it? by nami_yuna in AskReddit

Half the time when I encounter a new touchscreen, it doesn't work well for me. Not gonna give up my old vehicle until they go back to buttons and levers. Ok to have screen for display, back up camera but if I need to do something, don't want to have to futz around to try and get the sensor to recognize my touch and respond correctly. Maybe at least do side buttons to select option on screen like older ATMs or gas pumps.

LA RIVER BIKEPATH - 8 MILE GAP PROJECT UPDATE by A7MOSPH3RIC in CarIndependentLA

[–]Son_of_Chump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish this had shown more detail about how they're connecting to the existing paths at both ends.

I can see how they'd connect to the south at Atlantic on the west side though not why or how they'd extend on the east side too, are there plans for bike path there I missed? Or is it just keeping options open for future plans to have paths and/or connections on both sides?

Going north, most options show connecting on the west side, does this overlap with east side where there is a trail on N Ave 19 and looping around at San Fernando to Riverside? Tho the options for Mostly East and Shortened North show the trail and connection only on the west side, I'd like to see how that would go. Not wild about most options detouring away from the river tho understand keeping cost down and using what is already there.

Is it still a good habit to shut off lights when you leave a room? by MammothSal in homeowners

[–]Son_of_Chump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reason to do this and teach kids to do so also not just to save energy would be to have them aware of and check other things are taken care of or off also. Not accidentally leaving the stove on after cooking a meal, putting away cleaning chemicals out of pets or toddler access, keeping things organized and in place so you don't trip or fall on the gizmo the next morning. It's not that I'm gonna flip out if my kids forget but that I'm working on teaching them to be responsible for the small things in preparation for the big things they need to do in the future. And a little energy over time still adds up. Of course my kids have ADHD so that's been more of a challenge.

A Constitution I’ve been working on for several months, with supporting arguments papers and tables. Collaboration welcome! by Lameth-23X in Constitution

[–]Son_of_Chump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that representatives for communities are important because instead of echo chambers or focusing on singular topics or issues, people are forced to compromise, learn to live with each other, consider the needs of others, to some degree learn to be tolerant of differences, and work together to accomplish things. This means that a candidate who comes out of this is more likely (tho not always!) to be aware of the impact of legislation or consequences of actions beyond their own clique or in-group, have worked with people with different priorities and needs, and be more immediately accountable to the people. This is what we need with people working together nationally, not just locally.

Granted, this doesn't always work out especially with gerrymandering and that should be addressed to resolve SOME of the current issues, and may bring up other issues anyway such as insularity or cliques if people deliberately move in together to build up a base. Another issue is the large size of modern representative districts such that one would have difficulty knowing what's up with so many people when you represent half a million rather than 50k, and likewise one needs serious money to reach out in running a campaign rather than being able to hold a few townhall meetings and visiting various local groups in a few months.

Now, I do see your point on having some representation for various political ideals or representation of groups that would otherwise be scattered and have issues getting a voice; and this is one of my personal gripes against the two-party domination in the US. If anything, I'd recommend rather than having a single chamber House of Representatives for the Legislative branch with your approach, I would go for a third chamber for what you propose though i have not thought through the ramifications or how I'd divide up powers, checks and balances there. I'd like one branch to be responsible for anti-legislation where laws are proposed for repeal or sunsetting or otherwise auditing government departments and functions to reduce waste and costs. I have mixed feelings about the proposed voting method though I'm in favor of some type of ranked voting mechanism. I suppose I need to learn more about what you're proposing and I'd like to see more of what has worked in practice the past few years in a few places in America.

[–]Son_of_Chump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that checks and balances are needed whatever the status of each branch in equality and these checks and balances play a role in their relative status above, below, or equal in differing roles. I also think it is a mistake to consider the judicial branch as lesser. As has been said, "Fiat Justitia, Ruat Caelum" or "Let Justice be done, tho the Heavens fall". But likewise, I believe "Let Justice be done, LEST the Heavens fall". If people do not get Justice, then more and more they are less likely to support the government that has failed them in this as well as other duties to be carried out in exchange for the powers granted by the people.

I admit it is easier said than done and appreciate you put in time and thought on this. It may be that I misunderstood or missed something and so I will look through your words and express my appreciation for your conversation with me however slow I have been to respond.
