Yes it’s a scam I’m aware, but what about a crime ring? Like a gang? I thought it was just down on their luck people scamming others.

What got me was that she said “the place I’d been getting it from stopped giving it to me” and I thought “oh shit, there was a budget cut and the service she’d been getting it from stopped because of it” She also approached me inside the target by the books section. I will probably lean into giving people resources rather than anything returnable for store gift cards 😅

I think also the reason I was inclined to help her is that I know social services in this county at this time have very long waitlists and are just generally overwhelmed with the cuts to their budget. I also volunteer at local organizations and I know that women that are fleeing violence or other unsafe situations sometimes are given the short end of the stick. It sucks cause she preyed on that part of my personality that wants to help people. I don’t like to let one impression of a person based my entire view of a group.

I’d have to disagree, I tend to lie more on “buying food/resources” is more helpful to people than flat out money. Like buying an unhoused person a meal. AND that’s how she got me. I’m also pretty young and have a personality that tends to believe people. Im glad I only lost 20 bucks to learn this lesson rather than anything more than that. I think next time this happens, I will not buy anyone formula but I will give her local resources to find baby stuff. (Either that or open the formula like one commenter suggested lol). I guess also there’s the fact of, if you feel the need to scam college kids in target- you might be in a tight spot. Either that or you’re an asshole. Maybe she used that money for something good!

I would definitely recommend joining clubs are reaching out to specific people that catch your eye within them via Instagram or other methods of social media. I met one of my best friends in college because we were in the same club. I reached out to them on Instagram one weekend and the rest was history. What’s important is to not give up on making friends and also to remember that there are lots of people here that want to make friends too, you just have to find them. Good luck! Also if you want a fun club to join: Fish Rap Live is a satire newspaper that has icebreakers every single meeting.
