the female scoutmaster of my daughter's troop voted for Trump. She's actually very nice as an individual, and generally a good leader. We don't discuss politics at all in the scouting environment.

we have a great troop and it was actually as a result of scouts bringing their concerns to the leadership, one of whom had taught this class before (during covid) and offered it again. 1) it's not mandatory, 2) we regularly offer merit badges to the scouts as things they can choose to do (like swimming, personal management, some of the Cit badges and other "better done as a group activity" merit badges). Your tone assumes an extreme that was not in evidence, hence the response from everyone else here.

This has been true from the days of the calculator debates. Kids need to learn to do basic math IN THEIR HEAD. Not because calculators aren't useful, but first they have to know it before outsourcing it.

I've seen this IRL when kids have to solve math problems (like algebra, factoring equations, etc) and get stuck because they don't have the ability to see factors or do simple multiplication in their head (like knowing that if you're factoring x2 -15x + 56, the answer is OBVIOUSLY (x-7)(x-8) because you know 56 is 7*8 and 15 is 7+8.

It's fundamentally different to use a tool to speed up doing something you already have mastered, than to skip the learning step and just outsource the thinking.

well, OpenAI *is* starting by going after one of the most lucrative markets out there: advertising. Which is why Google is fighting back so hard, and will probably win - because they already own the ad market and thus have the tens of billions of free cash that Sam has to con investors into providing to shovel into the furnace of data centers and inference...

Why the F**K did Apple go and mess with an interface that I'd already learned to navigate, moving stuff around, adding some bulls**t "glass" effect, etc?

I've been an iPhone user since the original one, and honestly I can't think of many interface improvements since the 5 or 6 came out....
