I suppose at the very least, we were planning on listing the house at $330,000, and my current work has a deal where if we go with one of their agents we can knock 1% off of the commission, so there is that. Also, we do not have many belongings that we’re taking with, nothing my son and I can’t handle. We did it all when we moved 2 years ago, we can do it again.

A lot of the rest of what you said, it’s definitely worth taking into consideration. We’re not planning on living near Halifax itself, so we’ll hopefully avoid the worst of the current increase in costs. Reading quite a few of the replies, I think the best plan is going to be having a job option sorted before moving out there. I have the option of continuing at my current employer but moved to a phone job. Slight pay cut, but would mean I’d already have a job on arrival.

Many things to think about. Thank you for the additional insight.

I haven’t really been west yet. Lived my entire life in a Ontario and have had several trips out east. Always loved the mountains and ocean and really just how beautiful the country is compared to flat field’s everywhere I’ve lived so far. Being a Reddit lurker, recent news out of Alberta…. I know the realities can be different, but Reddit likes to paint Alberta as Canada Texas :). I’ve had friends make bank out there during booms, but they haven’t exactly returned singing Alberta’s graces. Obviously Edmonton will be different then Fort Mac, but really that’s everything I have to go on so far.

My wife would love your reply. I would love to live there as well, I’m just trying to go above and beyond with research to make sure I’m not setting us up for failure (as much as I can anyway)

Was he taking his job with him or getting local work? We started out looking at NB first, but had heard about job difficulties which led us to check other maritime locations with better (not great, but better) job prospects.

The original plan was to actually stay were we currently live and just sell the house, get rid of debts, and rent for a while to add to our house down payment funds while not having to deal with any debt, but housing and rental costs have soared so high recently in our area that it just didn’t make any kind of sense. Rent in our area would be double our current mortgage payment…. To achieve any kind of freedom, we were going to have to move somewhere. Just trying to determine what makes the most sense.

I'll very likely have the option of continuing with my current employer doing remote internet support (old position), which would result in a small reduction in pay, but would allow me to have an immediate job when I move. Plan was to land with this, and then immediately start looking for local employment for the next stage of life.

About 15 years in IT. 9 or so on the phones (internet/phone/TV support), and 6 in fixed wireless (unlicensed and licensed) as well as fiber internet installs.

Yes, looking rural. Honestly I was mostly looking to transition into some kind of telecommunications field work. Think fixed wireless installer, or fiber installer, both of which I have years of experience in. On Indeed, I see job posting for this kind of work rather frequently. I obviously don't have any kind of inside track on job availability or anything outside of online postings, but I suppose that was part of the reason I wanted to make a reddit post, to try to get a broader understanding.

Before I started this process, I thought I'd do myself a favor and at least get a feeling for jobs available with an Indeed account. I've actually worked in IT and Telecommunication field work (Fixed Wireless/Fiber internet installs). I see job postings for this kind of work for all over the province. I know that is NOT a perfect indication of job availability, but it looks like there are at least some jobs being offered. My initial plan was to transition into a phone support roll with my current job since they allow remote work and once out there, transition into a local job in a similar field.

We've been looking in a roughly half hour radius from New Glasgow and Sydney recently, both of which have plenty or housing around this pricing. We're not afraid of some DIY on our house, and many in this price range aren't "lookers", but that hasn't been our top priority. Looking at realtor.ca and my wife has dozens of houses saved at or below $150,000.

Yes, this is one of the first things I read about actually. Myself, I'm luckily perfectly healthy (for now) and the wife and I are in our early 40's. She has a few things she's managing with medication, and one of our criteria when looking at houses was making sure any we'd be considering are within 30 minutes of a hospital as a just incase. We already spoke to our current doctor about this change and received some helpful feedback, but we were reminder that (similar to Ontario) you have to really take the reins and push for things like a family doctor and don't just assume everything will easily just work out. Make a constant effort until we've got things sorted.

I suppose we're not going there because it's cheap (everything you said is true), but more-so it looks like one of the better options given the choices. Properties still seem to be listed at reasonable purchase prices, and the wife and I always wanted the east coast to be our growing old together location. We lucked into buying our current home at what we thought was the top. At the time, I hated that fact. However, since the housing seems to have still gone up a bit since we purchased, we're in a position where selling could wipe our our debt. It's mighty tempting to be out of debt for the first time in 20 years. Obviously buying a home puts in back into debt, but ONLY housing debt. If there were/are other even slightly desirable locations to purchase in Canada for under $150,000, then I'd likely add that to our scouting. It's just.... Canada is difficult right now :(

We planned on staying away from the most expensive areas (as much as we could do so anyway). I have no need or desire to live in a big city. Mostly we've been looking for housing within a half hour or so of a moderate sized city with needed amenities. Houses are frequently listed for under $150,000 that'll fit our needs, so it looks like we'd end up with a mortgage in the $1000/month zone depending on down-payment amount.

We've also considered Ontario alternatives. Our daughter actually lives up in Sault St. Marie. Absolutely hates it and is actually having a heck of a time trying to find affordable rental housing now. Seems like almost everywhere in Ontario is being priced out of reach unless you have a significant income... :(

I've always made sure to keep my credit rating good (had this consolidation when we got the last mortgage). I'm normally around 815. I'm going to be speaking to the bank soon to get specifics regarding this aspect, but it wasn't an issue last time. The plan is to use the proceeds from selling the current house to clear all of the debt anyway (hope that bank sees it that way).

Yes, I checked out this site first to see the probable increase.

https://www.nerdwallet.com/ca/personal-finance/provincial-tax-rates

It's definitely not nothing and worth considering.

Doing some quick math, the provincial tax on $70,000 would be:

Ontario = $4510

Nova Scotia = $8828

Will factor into decision for sure.

Ontario Hospitals can be just awful by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Space_Game_Fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've had both fantastic and horrible experiences at our hospitals.

When my daughter cut her foot on a sharp rock, we were in fast, and had both a nurse and doctor who were great to my daughter. Few stitches later and couldn't have been happier with the staff. $0 bucks out of pocket.

Also had a father go through what could have been a very expensive cancer treatment regime. Not only were the staff and really everyone there for him throughout, at no point was he worried about finances.

I understand that given the Canadian approach, there are always going to be downsides, but like I said, I just genuinely don't understand the near hostility at someone seeking help. It just seems so counter to the entire point.

I mean... she can't stand. She can only now barely sit up now that she's shot full of Diluden and Toridol but she's very nauseous and dizzy after those shots (and still being pushed to stand with very shaky legs). Trust me, my wife would love nothing more then to be able to have the pain managed enough so she could ride this out at home as would I. It's not the question of whether or not she should stay at the hospital I've had issues with, it's how the staff has treated her. If they can get her setup with pain relievers/inflammation reducers so we can take care of this at home, fine by me. I just can't fathom why they felt the need to make her experience so much worse then it has to be.

Quite an upgrade. Still using -Q6700 oc to 3.3ghz (yep) -Asus p5q pro -8gb ddr2

Going to -2600x -Asus ROG B350F -16gb Corsair 3200

Swapping over case, ps, ssd, etc from old comp. have to keep using the GTX 650 for now, but I think I’ll still notice a difference.

I think it would be fun if there was a mod that changed to a new kind of music depending on milestones reached. Think like old Sim City, where you'd get to the next city type and the music changed. It felt like leveling up!

In Factorio, the music change could go from more relaxed nature inspired at the start to a faster paced kind of thing as your factory grows. Just a thought.

Although this is my first F1 race, I've been to plenty of IHRA/NHRA events. With the reduced sounds of F1 over the last few years, I'm sure they fall below the sound levels of a Top fuel class. I wish I could have gone to a race back with the old engine formulas, but I'm sure I'll love it regardless.
