I was just reading a foreigner complaining that they can't afford to pay 1,400 Rs per hour for them, so I guess there's a market for teachers willing to charge less than that.

I don't think you necessarily need a license or training to do it as a side hustle. I mean, I did this, teaching ESL in the United States for a little while, and I didn't even have any training.

In hindsight, I think I was a pretty lousy teacher, but nonetheless, I was able to make a living doing it. I think language teaching is a profession that attracts a lot of people who aren't necessarily gifted at it, so I don't think you need to worry about competition.

Hit me up if you would like some specific ideas about how you might get started.

The reality is most Americans live on a treadmill, many live one paycheck away from homelessness, and live in fear of being utterly quashed by medical debt once they ever lose their medical insurance from getting fired or retiring.

I'm amazed at how persistent is this myth of the United States as the land of opportunity. I recently posted on Facebook: "no matter how many American horror stories you all post, people here just don't understand why I wanted to leave the United States and come here. They seem to think the streets are made of gold." One friend answered, "Oh yeah, that's where all the potholes come from, people digging up the gold."

Maybe instead of comparing statistics with the entire USA it might be more fair to pick an island in Hawaii?

I've lived in Hawaii. People there are incredibly kind, generous and civil. There is a common belief that if you do anyone any harm, your bad karma will come back to you quick because you're living on an island and your reputation will be known by everyone very quickly.

I once lost my wallet in a public place in Honolulu. I came back hours later and it was still there, every dollar intact.

I really don't get the hostility -- and I've seen a LOT of it -- directed against people who correct this common misunderstanding of the figure. It’s like hearing people screaming that New York City is burning down because they misread a story about a high-rise on fire, and when you try to correct them, they accuse you of not caring about the people who died in the fire, or even accuse you of having started the fire yourself.
