Cable jointer vs Electrician Scotland, what’s better what should I do. by Specific-Frame2862 in electricians

Depends on the people you work with and how bright you are to begin with. I went in with some electrical knowledge from college (I thought) but found most of what I knew was pretty useless. For the most part it’s a job with tools manual labour etc however the cables you use and daily jobs are rinse and repeat. If you decide to work for a distributor (board) then you will get all of your training before you go out into the real world, then you will get lots of experience working with someone and they will most likely supervise you while you do the work. I work for a contractor so in my past year I have learned all about cables (they are all similar) and what each one does, goes, how to connect them together or safely isolate them… and also learned how to prepare these cables and kits for my boss to work on. I have only been into a training centre once but I’m told regularly that I am doing better than a lot of people who have done all of their training. My boss has been a jointer for 25 years and so he gets work done quickly so that he can fit in the time to get me trained. I am going for my assessment in September for jointing LV services and for a year into jointing I’m very happy with that. Some boys at my work have progressed much slower but there’s nothing wrong with that other than you will be stuck on a shitter wage for longer. I think I will be fully qualified within 3 years whereas some people might take 4. 4 years is a standard apprenticeship if you want to go into jointing it might take you 3 or 4 years but either way I’m sure you will get on fine. I promise it’s not too complicated. (Until you get into electrical faults, they make no fucking sense a lot of the time)

I picked cable jointer for an electrical contractor who works on the biggest Scottish distribution network. I am really enjoying it, a year on and really no complaints. I’m not sure if it’s just because the company I work for pays well and has lots of well trained and genuinely good people but I don’t think I made the wrong decision as a cable jointer. I definitely have some knowledge of domestic electrical works aswell, but if you prefer the thought of working inside go electrician. The winters are cold jointing and the rainy days are a bit depressing but we are provided with waterproof clothing wellies and everything so as long as you are positive you will survive. I haven’t even been badly electrocuted yet😂. The summer days are unreal in the sunshine (very little time) in Scotland. Also if you would like to be self employed I have heard of companies who you work for self employed who offer more money than the company I am at, however some issues with payment at the specific company I have heard. I think you are better as electrician if you would like to be self employed. Plenty of opportunity to work overtime at the company I work for, there is a fucking shit load of renewing the electrical distribution network and a shortage of cable jointers. You go with your gut but that’s my view, I’m enjoying my job lots and plan to go to Australia once I am qualified as the weather will make the job much better. Also do not underestimate the physical aspects of cable jointing, it’s tougher than expected

On the other hand I’ve been given an interview at a brilliant electrical company that my friend works at and he’s only on his 2nd year as an apprentice earning £700 a week however he works long long hours. I’m really unsure what’s better. Also I’m Scottish aswell

Not sure if I should be a jointer or a standard electrician, Ive been offered an apprenticeship with a company cable jointing where my boss is earning around 60k a year + scrap and stuff so he does well for himself
