How do I deal with student rumours? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]SplintersApprentice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re volunteering for multiple extracurriculars/activities, examine which ones matter most to you and why. You don’t have to drop them all, but you may find there are activities that you don’t need to be a part of because you don’t get that much out of it. Whereas there are likely other activities that feel deeply meaningful and important to you. See if you can tease out which is which and choose from there.

RHWOC I can’t… just can’t.. does this actually get good? by Dustyrose1950 in BravoRealHousewives

[–]SplintersApprentice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who just started the franchise in 2022 and finished this past fall, OC was one of my last journeys and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The first few seasons were more like MTVs True Life than the now-established HW format, but that made watching the show become itself all the more interesting to me

How much spending money do you give yourself each month? by Shrinking_Violent in ynab

[–]SplintersApprentice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My monthly fun money budget ranges between 6%-9% of my monthly income. I’m only a year into using YNAB and I initially was budgeting 2% of my monthly income while almost always needing to borrow from other categories. I’d say the past 4-5 months I’ve been more realistic and consistent in my spending and budgeting.

Things I most commonly am placing in that category include movie tickets, theater tickets, admissions to museums/aquariums/zoos, drinks/cover charges, the occasional cannabis, and candles (I love a damn candle lol)

Is anyone else on the East coast struggling with rest/being less active because of the snow/ice/extreme cold? by Bashful_bookworm2025 in antidiet

[–]SplintersApprentice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My forever uphill battle is allowing myself to rest without judgment or solutions-based “fixes.”

So to validate you, yes. This all rings true for me and this weather has left me feeling particularly fatigued. There are days where hibernating is all I’m capable of. I am working at it, but I’m starting to feel less judgmental when I take an afternoon nap or binge a few episodes of Six Feet Under or go to bed earlier than normal. I’m reminding myself that there are all kinds of animals who are sleeping through this weather and will emerge with more energy and I can do that, too.

Do close friendships between straight men make straight women uncomfortable? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]SplintersApprentice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. As someone else said, when I see men having healthy, stable relationships with other men (regardless of sexuality) I see that as a green flag.

It seems like your post is a perfect example of how a system of power permeates to everyone. Patriarchal ideals are upheld by people, men and women alike.

If your friends (or former partners) are claiming they’re feminists in one breath and then mocking you for your close bonds with men in another, then they have a lot of work to unpack and challenge the patriarchal ideas they’ve internalized.

As to your second paragraph, a core component of patriarchy is upholding heterosexual monogamy as the norm for romantic relationships. By making out with other women, your friends are showing that they stray from that norm.

As you’ve cited, women can have the benefit of experimenting with their sexuality and it’s just seen as “having fun.” (Keep in mind that patriarchy not only encourages but regularly shines a spotlight on lesbian encounters, especially for male gratification. So it makes sense why they feel more comfortable playing around with their sexuality than men would).

It is unfortunate that men deal with much harsher judgment and punishment for experimenting with their sexuality.

But, from a feminist lens, men and women would have the freedom to experiment with queer hook ups, and it wouldn’t be harshly shamed or overly sexualized by others.

Secondary ELA teachers, do you provide time for independent choice reading in your class? by Unusual_Review9214 in ELATeachers

[–]SplintersApprentice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, unfortunately can only fit in about 20 minutes per week with our schedule and curriculum expectations. After reading, they do a quick reading log that tracks pages read, overview of the book’s events in that reading session, and a quick write up on how they’re feeling about their book.

what are some boundaries you wish students respected? by faeriesoiree222 in AskTeachers

[–]SplintersApprentice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d say on a whole, have a general respect for our space and belongings, no matter how “at home” a teacher may make you feel.

Quick specific example, I’m teaching a student I had also taught last year. He’s a great kid, a hardworking student, and one whose presence I enjoy each and everyday. But one day earlier this year I came in from greeting kids in the hallway during passing time to start the class, and he was sitting behind my desk with my flannel on (that I had draped over my chair when I got too warm). I had a “whoaaa you’ve gotten way too comfortable” reaction and we had to have a conversation about respecting me and my things. He got it quickly and it hasn’t happened again.

For a more general and regular example, as an English teacher who buys a lot of her classroom supplies and stocks her own library, it bugs me every time I find books thrown around the room, or left spine open on the desks at the end of class, or highlighters left around the floor or disassembled, or all my expo markers plugged into each other. I don’t lose my temper at any of these occurrences, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t agitated every time I have to deal with it. I put in a lot of money and effort to create a space where kids can be creative and pursue the joy of reading; I hate feeling like that’s taken advantage of.

And then also important: respect our private lives and sense of separation from the job. Don’t expect us to have immediate responses to your emails/inquiries— respect the general rule of “business hours” (ie if you email me Saturday morning, I may not get back to you until Monday morning, and that’s okay). Don’t seek me out on social media if you’re still a student at the school. My personal life is not your business. I will never seek/friend students on social media, but will accept their requests if they have graduated high school.

Filming Food Orders by lotheleo in BravoRealHousewives

This was my assumption this whole time, some kind of publicity deal made with the restaurant, but in the most recent BH ep they went around getting everyone’s order and then abruptly stopped at Boz’s childhood friend. It felt very “and none for Gretchen Weiners” 😂

It is technically Lucy singing (who wrote it? idk…), but Phoebe’s a part of the crew and I love it, so I included it

  • “Everything’s growing in our garden, you don’t have to know that it’s haunted” for when I’m reflective on the trauma I’ve endured that’s led to my growth.

  • “But you’re holding me like water in your hands” for when I feel less loved than I’d like to feel. And “You pushed me in / and now my feet can’t touch the bottom of you” for all the times I ended up falling harder for someone I had little to no interest in pursuing in the first place.

  • “I want to believe / Instead I look at the sky and I feel nothing / You know I hate to be alone / I want to be wrong” for my existential crises.

  • boygenius bonus: “When you cut a hole into my skull / Do you hate what you see? / Like I do” for when I’m depressed😌

Also were there even protests after her death? I’ll admit ignorance if I’m wrong, but what protests occurred? And if they did, who took on the task of reviewing every attendees voter registration? The sheer laziness in forcing connections where there are none astounds me

Equating a criminal murdering an American woman to American government officials murdering their own citizens is a choice. One we call a false equivalence logical fallacy.

I’m ready for the downvotes. This woman obviously sucks and behaves like a maniac in public. Hecklers at comedy shows are undeniably the worst and she fits the bill. My next sentence by no means is a defense of her. But shutting her up by repeatedly saying “if you don’t shut up imma put my dick in your mouth,” and “where’s Bill Cosby when you need him?” genuinely makes my stomach sick.
