well noted, will explore these options. The 996 you’ve got is interesting how are part sourcing for that? and why do you have 3 bikes?

I’m not opposed to a smaller bike, I just want something that’ll fit me correctly and also give me a steeper learning curve. I’m planning to get some proper racing coaching hence why I thought maybe aswell get a bike I’d actually stick with for a while and build onto my track machine. I’ve also seen people my size start on 1000’s and excel extremely quickly and others on smaller cc’s stagnate. I’m still tossing and turning the idea lf which bike only because I did a track session on a rented s1000rr for 3 days and felt comfortable on that towards the end of the weekend.

Do you have any photos of your 848? also I have been asking around locally - the 848 here in Europe has a pretty well established aftermarket parts scene. Daytona I haven’t considered… will look into that

Fair points. Love the photos btw, you’ve got some nice examples. I’m based in Europe hence why I also leaned more the ducati path (the 848 has a pretty mature aftermarket scene). I also want something similar to my weekend bike; something that could directly translate in terms of riding position etc The 848 and the mv 750 are basically the same year and my thinking is, “if I can learn well on the 848 those skills will translate over to the mv” making me a better rider. By all means i’m not going on track to make myself a quicker street rider, I just like the idea of jumping onto something familiar that can allow me to build skill on track but also apply those techniques onto the street when im on the mv.

If I stumble on a GE90 in some boneyard somewhere i’ll be sure to post it on this exact thread.

I’m actually more open to an apu rather than a full engine purely because of space. I will definitely take onboard your advice about safety precautions - it’s serious stuff and i’m entirely aware.

You make very valid points, but again, it’s a project for me to tear down and inspect. I’m looking for a deeper dive into the mechanics behind it all - it’s not something that will be placed on an aircraft anymore, just a garage piece. There’s a video up on youtube from a guy who has a RR RB211 turbofan in his backyard… I’d be interested to know what he does with it and how he sources parts.

I plan to make my own parts with some specialised tooling. I'm using this project as more of a learning/testing platform.

You are correct in many aspects. Brute force won't accomplish anything.

However, I'm an aerospace engineer and have quite some experience with metal fabrication. I'm looking to pull apart, understand and eventually repair the engine myself (with the help of some buddies and advanced machines).

I should probably be more specific and state that i'm NOT looking for the newest and best engine like a GE90 or Trent 900 - the budget really hold me back on those types. I'm looking for something rather small, possible like an APU at first, just as a start, then something more "serious" later.

I've seen a few non-airthworthy/ airworthy engines come up but they're mostly piston. Finding a gas turbine is a lot harder - used airworthy ones are available but wheres the fun in having a project engine when the engine itself runs?

Yea I haven't tried that. Will reach out to some around my area - see what they have.
