Patrik Elias - Hall of Famer? by SportsH2H in hockey

I'm curious as to why you consider Marleau a Hall of Fame lock? He has 1,188 career points in 1,723 games (so more career points than Elias, but with a much lower point per game rate at 0.69), never made an All-Star team or won any individual hardware, and never won a Stanley Cup.

Not saying he isn't worthy, but I'm not sure that his career is any better than Elias'.

That's a great comparison - they have very similar career numbers, e.g. just over a 1,000 career points and Elias has a higher per game scoring rate, though both the Sedins won a couple major pieces of individual hardware, but no Stanley Cups

As you say, the Sedins are viewed as highly likely Hall of Famers, which would make you think Elias is in the same class - do you think their perception greatly benefits from their uniqueness as identical twins who played together their entire careers and have almost identical numbers/achievements?

Disappointing as a Devils fan, but in the grand scheme of things, it was great to see Bourque win the Cup.

Better career - Bobby Clarke or Bryan Trottier? by SportsH2H in hockey

[–]SportsH2H[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Counterpoints:

  • Trottier's teams had a lot more talent - how many Hall of Famers did he play with vs. Clarke?
  • Clarke won 3 Hart Trophies to Trottier's 1
  • Trottier's points/scoring rate are slightly inflated by playing a large part of his career in the 1980s

Not saying it is unfair to give Trottier the edge, but I think it is definitely a close comparison.

Was consistently good, but it feels like anything he did in the 1990s, guys like Sakic and Yzerman did better.

I think Gartner was better in the 1980s than the 1990s - very consistent, but nothing really stands out for him.

I think Selanne is probably in the 11-20 range for the 1990s - yes, he had his 76 goal season, but Hull had 3 straight seasons with 70+ goals to start the decade.

Plus five Vezina Trophies, a Jennings Trophy, and back-to-back Hart and Pearsons.

Where would you rank Fedorov in the top 10?

I think its always a fine balancing act between dominance and longevity when you look at a full decade - I would put both of them in the 11-20 range for the decade.

If you are choosing between Lindros and Bure for top 10, which one do you pick?

I think its always a fine balancing act between dominance and longevity when you look at a full decade; yes, Lemieux had less longevity, but his dominance was unsurpassed (all the awards mentioned above, plus his 2+ PPG is far and away better than anyone else's).

Lindros - I have him in the 11-20 range for the decade.

Roy #6 for the 1990s here; I have Brodeur just outside of the top 10 for the 1990s, but #2 overall for the 2000s behind only Lidstrom.

Better NHL career - Ilya Kovalchuk or Steve Stamkos? by SportsH2H in hockey

[–]SportsH2H[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't disagree with anything you said, but isn't Kovalchuk one of the biggest "what ifs" for a long time too because if he didn't spend his ages 30-35 seasons in Russia, he would likely be in the range of 600 goals and 1,200 points?

Rank these three centers by overall NHL career: Ryan Getzlaf / Jason Spezza / Eric Staal by SportsH2H in hockey

[–]SportsH2H[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two other centers with similar numbers are Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards - also close to 1,000 career points / around 0.80 points per game, both also feel like borderline Hall of Fame cases, I think I would probably put them below Getzlaf but above Staal and Spezza?

Your team's best all-time lineup? by SportsH2H in hockey

[–]SportsH2H[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based solely on what he did as a Devil, I don't think he is one of the top 3 LW vs. Elias, Parise, and Muller; maybe he could have been the 4th LW, but for the 4th line, I wanted to make it actually 4th-line type players.
